The MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) is an internationally recognized facility at the forefront of plasma physics and fusion energy research. It is located on the main MIT campus in Cambridge MA and comprises a team of almost 200 top-tier students, scientists, and engineers jointly pursuing fusion research at national laboratory-like scale. The PSFC recently announced a new, accelerated pathway to fusion energy that is based on the development and demonstration of the world’s highest performing superconducting fusion magnets and the design of the first net-energy fusion device: the SPARC tokamak. The PSFC is undertaking searches for exceptional individuals who want to work in the fast-paced, team-oriented environment of the SPARC project to achieve net fusion energy on an aggressive timescale to help combat global climate change. The candidate’s primary responsibility will be to work in the PSFC’s substantial machine shop to fabricate a wide range of components, fixtures, tooling, structures, and other hardware required for large-scale superconducting magnet development and testing. Significant experience working with the structural materials found in these systems is essential, including aluminum, steel, inconel, copper, molybdenum, tungsten, G10, and fiber-reinforced plastics. The candidate should be very familiar with modern machine tools (e.g. the programming of CAM milling machines and lathes) and will be expected to setup, maintain, and operate such machine tools. Experience using EDM machines is desired but not essential. An ability to work closely with students, researchers, and engineers in the fast-paced, team-oriented SPARC project from the part design stage through final piece finishing is required.
Requirements: A two-year day technical school degree with numerically control machine training, and a minimum 5 years of applicable experience as a machinist are required. CAM software experience and experience operating 5 axis machines and other modern machine tools; Ability to handle multiple parallel projects, including those with both short- and longer-term time horizons, and complete tasks on schedule with minimal supervision. Overtime availability is desired.
Wage Rate (hourly): $35.09 – $38.26
