The MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) is an internationally recognized facility at the forefront of plasma physics and fusion energy research. It is located on the main MIT campus in Cambridge MA and comprises a team of almost 200 top-tier students, scientists, and engineers jointly pursuing fusion research at national laboratory-like scale. The PSFC recently announced a new, accelerated pathway to fusion energy that is based on the development and demonstration of the world’s highest performing superconducting fusion magnets and the design of the first net-energy fusion device: the SPARC tokamak. The PSFC is undertaking searches for exceptional individuals who want to work in the fast-paced, team-oriented environment of the SPARC project to achieve net fusion energy on an aggressive timescale to help combat global climate change. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing administrative support to the SPARC Chief Engineer and Principal Investigators. Responsibilities will include: scheduling and arranging meetings; handling telephone inquiries and fielding questions from PSFC personnel, other MIT areas, and the public; making domestic and foreign travel arrangements for the SPARC group and for submitting online travel expense reports and related documents; using the MIT purchasing systems to procure goods and services for the SPARC research and engineering team, process requests for payment, and process invoices; assisting with coordination of major events when needed, such as booking rooms, ordering refreshments, setup, breakdown, etc.; typing, scanning and photocopying materials as needed; maintaining filing systems and project documentation; ordering, organizing, and maintaining all necessary office supplies.

Requirements: Associate/Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, 3 years direct or related experience. The successful candidate will be well organized, detail oriented, and enjoy the challenge of working in a stimulating and fast moving office environment, managing a varied workload involving multiple tasks in parallel, under pressure of deadlines. The person shall have demonstrated flexibility and good judgment in the face of changing priorities and unplanned distractions. Strong communications and interpersonal skills are essential. The candidate must demonstrate a willingness to work with researchers, graduate students, and other staff to solve administrative problems and provide for their administrative needs.

Knowledge of MIT or a similar research environment is highly desirable. Strong clerical computer software skills are required, including the ability to identify and learn new programs and software skills as necessary. Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook (or similar calendar), email clients, Acrobat, required.

Wage Rate (hourly): $20.04 – $33.30
