Important Bulletins: Electronic Journal Access

PSFC Library

August 1, 2011

The PSFC Catalog and Electronic Journal Gateway have been updated to include the new protocols and links mandated by the electronic journal license requirements prescribed by MIT Main Libraries:

http://www.psfc.mit.edu/cgi-library/exec.pl?rm=8&jm=jh

(This link is available from the PSFC Library home page as “Electronic Journals”)

Some journals still require certificate validation, so direct links to articles may not work (for example, those received via email).  Using the gateway at the link above should ensure access.

Many links now provide more than one access source, including journal coverage overlaps.  This requires the user to read carefully the available coverage ranges and select accordingly.  For example:

Below is an important message from Ann Wolpert, Director of MIT Libraries regarding some changes to electronic journal access.  Of particular interest to the PSFC Community are titles offered by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) and the American Physical Society (APS).

Here’s the bottom line:

Whether you are on- or off-campus, in order to be recognized as a qualified subscriber you must:

        or

Your MIT status will be automatically verified before you are passed through to the publisher’s site.

At this time, it is indeterminate how many links from the PSFC Library catalog AND the PSFC electronic journal web portal are compliant with this protocol.  It will take some time to verify all links in all titles and remediate incompatibilities.

In the meantime, please read the entire notice, below, to determine other journal societies which affect you, and to review important links and resources for further information.

Sorry for the inconvenience.  I will update the PSFC Community when I determine the full scope and resolution of this problem.

Director of Libraries

I am writing to provide advance notice regarding an important, impending change in the way the MIT Libraries provide access to several key online publishing platforms.  This change is made necessary because the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), and the Physical Society of Japan (JPS) have recently reported numerous and growing instances of excessive, systematic downloading of articles from their online publishing systems via MIT IP addresses.  Although these instances originate primarily from outside MIT, the excessive use is accomplished via MIT’s network.  Please note that AIP’s “ Scitation” online publishing platform also hosts journals and other published content for many key societies outside of physics.  A full list is provided at the end of this message.

The MIT Libraries’ contracts with these publishers require that MIT maintain a secure network and make reasonable efforts to prevent systematic downloading and excessive use of the resources. Consequently, the Libraries will introduce a new layer of access control for these publishing platforms that will significantly reduce the probability that such abuse will continue in the future.  The need for this additional layer of security, and the inconvenience it will cause, are highly regrettable.  Unfortunately, these changes are necessary if access to these valuable resources is to be maintained for MIT.  We will be implementing the new access requirements during the week of July 25th.

How this change will affect your access to these resources:

  • Whether you are on- or off-campus, in order to be recognized as a qualified subscriber you must either

    • Use the shortcut “get” URL for these publishers (please see the list below),

        or

Your MIT status will be automatically verified before you are passed through to the publisher’s site.

  • Links from alert/update services will not function for these publications.
  • Links from the titles in Google Scholar results will work only if the user clicks on the “Full text - MIT Libraries” link.  See instructions for how to set this feature up.

For more pointers, please see our web page that illustrates a variety of ways to access online publisher content: Accessing Licensed Electronic Resources

This new layer of access control operates by verifying an individual’s status at MIT against the MIT Roles Database. Only current faculty, students, and staff will be authorized for access to these resources.  All others, including affiliates, will be denied access.  We recognize that some people in the affiliate category are in fact legitimate current members of the MIT community.  Please contact econtrol-lib@mit.edu to request authorization for such individuals.  Requests received are verified and access for the individual is manually instated when appropriate – typically within 24 hours.

The Libraries will communicate the details of this change to the MIT community during the week of July 18th in anticipation of implementation during the week of July 25th.   Information about the change will be available on the Libraries website going forward, and a second communication program will be implemented during the first week of classes to alert members of the MIT community to the change as they return to campus.

The MIT Libraries regret the need for this additional security and the inconvenience it will bring.  As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions and appreciate your support.

Thank you,
Ann Wolpert
