WIRELESS INTERNET CONNECTION

Printable view

The following information is provided by the PSFC Office of Computer Services. For questions or further information, contact Henry Bergler at 3-9665, bergler@psfc.mit.edu.

For security and accounting purposes we need to have wireless systems registered.

Connection to the wireless network at the PSFC requires preregistration of MAC addresses, except for special events. For special events with outside visitors meeting at the PSFC, we can open a DHCP pool that does not require preregistration. Whether or not preregistration is required, the following WEP encryption key must be configured.

Network Name (or SSID): PSFC
WEP Encryption key:
If entered as ASCII text (case-sensitive): power
If entered as a string of hex digits: 706f776572

Wireless coverage at the PSFC is restricted to conference rooms, the CMOD control room, the Library and some lab space. Office space that is close to a conference room might have adequate signal strength, however.

If a wireless connection is used in a location where the signal is marginal, performance is degraded for all devices that connect through that Wireless Access Point. For that reason, we discourage the use of wireless connections from most office space.

A notebook PC or Mac PowerBook may be registered for both a wired network connection (for use in an office or lab) and a wireless network connection (for use in conference rooms and labs with wireless coverage). There is no additional fee for the second registration.
