Alcator C-MOD Highlights Report December 30, 1993 The scheduled shutdown period between the Phase I and Phase II operating campaigns continues. Despite the holiday and a minor snow storm, appreciable progress was made this week in several areas. In-vessel work has continued. All of the lower EF1 pocket tile modules have now been removed from the vessel for installation of modified tile hold-down hardware. Also, the old current-shunts have been removed from all of the outer divertor modules; these will be replaced by a new shunt configuration which will not be subject to the large bending forces experienced by the original design. The port extensions on E and H ports have been re-installed and the bolts torqued up. Leak checking of the pump space between inner and outer seals has been carried out. All the bus tunnel connections have been torqued up to spec. The East-side connections have been fully inspected and the east cover re-installed. A test fitup of the viewing dump for the visible bremsstrahlung array diagnostic has been successfully completed. This diagnostic is scheduled to be installed for Phase II operation, and will provide information on the spatial profile of Zeff. The step-start house for the second FMIT (ICRF) transmitter unit has been installed and local tests completed. Spin testing of the alternator/flywheel has begun as of Thursday, Dec 30. The first spin-up of the alternator since installation of the 75 tonne flywheel is underway. This procedure, at a fraction of nominal speed, is being carried out as part of a systems checkout, in preparation for balancing work which will begin next week.
