Alcator C-MOD Weekly Highlights February 4, 1997 Reassembly of Alcator C-Mod continued last week with the installation of the lower wedge plate. The upper wedge was also temporarily installed to check alignment. This is a very critical operation since the wedge plates provide the primary alignment platform for the TF arms. Preparations are now underway for installation of the lower TF arms. The temporary stand that has allowed vessel entry for the last few weeks must now be removed so that full crane access to the bottom of the machine will be available. With the addition of each major component, we have continued tests of heaters, thermocouples, new OH diagnostics, OH resistances, and electrical isolation of machine components where required. Work on the DNB this week focused on design specifications for the high voltage power supply and the modulator-regulator. Work on the RF system included fitting up the first sections of coax in the cell. Preparations are being made to begin low power tests of the magnet power supplies. Tests of new PLC interlock and alarm software is underway. We continue to fabricate, bake, leak check, and test new invessel diagnostic components. Many scientists and engineers are now engaged in preparations for the Program Advisory Committee meeting to be held this Thursday and Friday, 2/6 and 2/7 at MIT. A complete review of our program status and plans will be given. New interesting WEB sites continue to come online. For a view of the Alcator Cell updated approximately every few seconds see http://lost.pfc.mit.edu/cmod/live.html From this location you can watch nearly realtime the reassembly of the machine. A view of the control room will also be available soon. A group of scientists and computer professionals from PPPL visited on January 23 to explore the possibility of using our MDSplus data system software on the NSTX experiment. The group consisted of Dori Barnes, Dwight Bashore, Bob Kaita, Stan Kaye, Gary Oliaro, Phyllis Roney who represented the NSTX project and the PPPL computer division. They met with Tom Fredian, Josh Stillerman and Martin Greenwald. Tony Peebles and David Brower from UCLA visited this week to discuss collaborations on Alcator C-Mod. Jim Irby attended the Enabling Technologies meeting in Oak Ridge Tennessee last week.
