Alcator C-MOD Weekly Highlights April 28, 1997 The alternator is now running at full speed and was used for power tests into the magnets on Friday. After cooling down the machine structure and the magnets, we exercised all power supplies and coils except for EFC. Several small problems were found and corrected. A faulty breaker on the EFC chopper supply has been repaired and this supply is ready for testing. The power group has now turned its attention to preparations for the EF4 reactor installation. Following four days of bake-out at temperatures up to 130C, the vessel was cooled down and leak checked. A leak was found at the D horizontal port, which is one of the two ICRF antenna ports. Some of the newly installed RF coax had to be removed to reach the flange so that tests could be made near the seal. A smaller leak was also detected at a window at C-port. The vessel will be brought up-to-air in order to remedy these leaks, following which bake-out will resume. Work on the new RF transmitters and transmission lines is moving rapidly now that people have been freed up from machine assembly. The Hi-yard work is complete and awaiting inspection. The major work involved in assembling, fitup, and building support structures is complete for the new coax in the cell. We are now working on installation of the transmission line diagnostics and fault detectors. The new ignitrons for the crowbar circuits have been installed and the cooling water loop is operational. Coax from the IPAs to the FPAs is being installed. High voltage cables and conduit is also being installed. As-built documentation of the DNB Mod/Reg was completed and we are beginning the modifications required to use the new ACCEL supply. We are working up plans for the various conduits required to get the ACCEL voltages and arc/filament current to the cell from the power room. Ned Eisner has joined the DNB group. He did his PhD work at Columbia, and is now a postdoc with the University of Texas. Ned will be permanently on-site to participate in DNB installation, operation, and diagnostic development. Raffi Nazikian and Mike McCarthy from PPPL visited last week to work on software and hardware problems involving the reflectometry collaboration. Gerd Schilling, also from PPPL, continued working with the RF group on the new transmitter installation. Steve Wolfe, Martin Greenwald, and Amanda Hubbard attended the US-European Transport Task Force Workshop in Madison, Wisconsin last week. Martin Greenwald and Amanda Hubbard presented papers. The title of Amanda's talk was "Analysis of Edge Parameters in the H-mode Transition and Pedestal on Alcator C-mod", and Martin's was "Recent Observations in Alcator C-mod H-modes".
