Alcator C-Mod Weekly Highlights November 22, 1999 Last week was the first full maintenance week in our current up-to-air period. Helium discharge cleaning was carried out on Tuesday and Wednesday to remove as much deuterium from the vessel walls as possible and to reduce the levels of diborane released when coming up-to-air. On Thursday and Friday the vessel was bought up to room air and then pumped down again several times to remove diborane products produced when water vapor reacted with boron compounds on the wall. By Friday afternoon the diborane levels were below alarm levels, and by Monday morning diborane was no longer detectable in exhaust air from the vessel. Some calibration and alignment checks will be carried out during the next few days. Manned entry invessel is expected in approximately one week. The FMIT#3 transmitter was checked out last week and made operational again at the 2 MW level into a dummy load. During the last day of plasma operation the screen crowbar tripped and shut down the transmitter. We are still investigating the cause of the crowbar trip. We also began an upgrade to all the FMIT water systems that will allow us to reduce the static pressure on the FPA anodes and increase the cooling water flow rates. Work on the DNB last week included continued assembly of the high voltage protection cage in the cell. Some of the high voltage dividers are being compensated and work continued on modifications to the MCL. Work also continued on the DNB PLC programs.
