| Run Plan for Tuesday April 18, 2000 Plasma run will begin at 9:00 and end by 17:00 Machine Conditioning is primary goal of run SL: Irby PO: Snipes EO: Silva, Dekow Engineering Setup: ------------------ ECDC Stopped at 05:10 to check out vacuum contiions and to do cooldown. Power system setup as on 1000407018 Fizzle detector should be on from t=0.080 to 1.7 s Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: VUV, but not ECE until Amanda checks out her system ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last Saturday we were up-to-helium to pull out a failed shutter at h-port. Though the turn around was pretty quick, we still have much more water in the machine than we had on 4/07. Objectives: . continue machine conditioning . try some short gas puffs during the discharge to test out Spencer's wall conditioning proposal . bring up RF as possible . bring up DNB as possible Summary: It was a good run. The machine ran very well with no delays. The first two shots were the usual Tuesday OH test shot and a TF test shot. Shot 12 was a no-plasma test shot. Shot 14 was the only fizzle. The rest were full length good plasmas although there were numerous injections. Rice said they did not appear to be Moly injections though, so it is unclear what they were. I suspect they could be boron nitride dust, but that is just a guess. Spencer managed to get some wall conditioning test shots done. Otherwise, it was a good cleanup run. Shot 1: Copied shot 1000407007 and recalculated all controllers that use the BP coils. Then, subtracted 3 ms off of the pre-puff to make it 25 ms duration. Start with standard OH tuesday test shot. Test O.K. Shot 2: TF test pulse at 50 kA. Test O.K. Shot 3: Plasma! Good shot. A couple of injections on Prad. Shot 4: Plasma! Good shot. Another couple of injections on Prad. Shot 5: Repeat. Good shot. A couple of big and several smaller injections. Shot 6: Repeat. Good shot. A couple of big and several smaller injections. Shot 7: Increased nl04 from 5 to 6.5 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot. Still a number of impurity injections. Shot 8: Increased nl04 to 8 x 10^19 m^-2 and added a gas puff at 1.0 s for 10 msec by asking to double the density for that time and then for 5 x 10^19 m^-2 afterward. Good shot. Still had many injections. Gas puff is only seen on the D alpha signal. Shot 9: Return to 5 x 10^19 m^-2 and then repeat the gas puff at 1 s but now for 30 msec duration up to 1.5 x 10^20 m^-2 then down to 4 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot. Gas puff slightly visible on the density. Shot 10: Increase the gas puff to 50 msec duration starting at 1 sec. Now, it is visible on the density, but there is also an injection at that time. Otherwise, it is a good shot, though there is a big injection between 0.4 and 0.5 sec that takes quite a bite out of the current. Shot 11: Take out the gas puff at 1 sec as a control shot. Good shot, but there is still a large injection early at 0.29 sec that takes a bite out of the current. Shot 12: No plasma shot to do a gas puff test. A 90 V gas puff was added from 1 - 1.05 sec in segment 1 and the other gas puffs were left in. Segment 2 was turned off as was the fizzle detector and all power supplies. Gas valve did not stay on all of the time, but CSP will take what he got. Shot 13: Raise nl04 to 8 x 10^-19 m^-2 straight across. Good shot. Again with an injection/MARFE early at 0.3 sec. Shot 14: Try to make the transition to diverted plasma more gradual in the current rise by adjusting RCUR, CLEARIN, ZXL, and ZXU to reduce the elongation slightly around cross-over of OH1. Fizzle! Shot 15: Reduce Br0 offset from -0.5 mT to -1.0 mT. Good shot. Partially cured the early injection problem. Still one big late injection. Shot 16: Try moving the change in RCUR out by 0.05 s in the current rise to avoid cross-over of OH1. Also moved CLEARIN similarly. A number of injections again. Good shot. Shot 17: Raised nl04 to 1 x 10^20 m^-2. Rice requested that Argon be turned on to check out the HIREX system. Good shot. Disrupted at 1.7 s and there still were a number of injections. Shot 18: Try to improve the rampdown by keeping the plasma elongated past 1.7 s. Increase Argon puff to 50 msec for Rice. Good shot. Disrupted a bit earlier though. Shot 19: Repeat. Good shot. Large injection at 0.54 s. Shot 20: Repeat with flappers opening at 1.0 s and remaining open for the rest of the shot. Clear change in density at 1.0 sec. Good shot. Shot 21: Inner wall limited discharge. Decreased RCUR to 0.66 m and CLEARIN to -.05 m throughout the shot. Reduced the density to 7 x 10^19 m^-2 Reduced Ar puff to 25 ms duration. Centered ZCUR. Good shot. A number of large injections. Disrupted at 1.85 s. Shot 22: Added 110 V, 40 msec duration gas puff to Pulse Gas 3 for CSP at 1 sec. Good shot. Did not get full duty cycle on the gas puff. Need to turn off the density feedback as well. Still lots of injections. Shot 23: Turned off density feedback after 1.0 sec to get a steady gas puff at 1.0 sec. Good shot. Many small injections. Clear density rise at the gas puff at 1.0 sec. Shot 24: Reloaded the diverted plasma from shot 20. Got 1 x 10^20 m^-2. Good shot though there are still a number of injections. Shot 25: Turned off all gas except the gas in segment 1 including the Argon and the density feedback. Shot 25: Turned off all gas except the gas in segment 1 including the Argon and the density feedback. Good shot. Lots of injections. Density still reached 6 x 10^19 m^-2 with no gas after 0.1 sec. |
