Goals: Continue conditioning
Run some upper nulls to condition the top of the machine, and do
a little discharge development for future runs
Run some "ohmic H-mode" tf programs, to see what happens (as a
gauge of current machine condition)
RF#1 may try to pulse between shots.

Start from a re-load of 1000418016.

For future reference, the upper nulls are in segment #3, and the ohmic H-modes
are in segment #4.

First two shots ran ok, with injections. A small gain tweak on
clearin integral gain may or may not have improved the early thrash.

First try at upper null was shot 3, which failed. The first successful
upper null was shot 8. Additional tuning shots to get rid of several vertical
thrashes and improve the rapdown continued through shot #17. Most of these
were decent upper null plasmas with Mo injections, and varying amounts of
thrashing, but making it into rampdown. The recycling was quite low, in that
the 5e19 shots were still requiring gas puffing through the shot.

Shot #17 was a Pitcher-puff, with density feedback off and no second segment
gas puff except for a 50msec pg3 puff at 1sec. nl4 got to 2e19 before the
puff, went up to 4e19, and noticably decayed in 300msec.

Shot 18 was a lower null, 1MA, 1e20 shot which ran to completion with only a
few Mo injections. This was actually run by accident, but was a useful check
on machine condition. Note that the segment 4 title claims this is an ohmic
h-mode, but it isn't.

Shots 19-21 were attempts at ohmic h-mode. #19 disrupted at 0.6sec. After some
minor shape adjustments, #20 ran to completion, but did not go into
h-mode. The qpsi only got down to 2.9. For shot #21 we lowered the tf minimum
from -82ka to -74ka; we got an h-mode at ~0.9sec, but the plasma died of
radiation/vertical problems at 1.05sec. The h-alpha and bolo looked like the
h-mode was ELM-free.

All in all, a pretty successful run. The upper null development is essentially
complete, although it would be good to fix the vertical position thrash in the
first 100msec after segment switch. Note that seg1 zcur programs the position
to start moving before t=0.1sec, so we flipped seg1 zcur as well as seg3. It
may be better to run the upper nulls with zcur=0, although we only dropped it
as far as +0.01 today. It looked to me as if the number of injections in upper
null was decreasing as the day went on, and certainly we weren't seeing big
gas influx. On the other hand, H/D was still high, not getting below 0.2 even
at 1.e20 in the upper null discharges.

Considering the small number of shots, the h-mode series was pretty successful
as well. This was undertaken mainly as an indicator of wall condition and
cleanliness, and the tentative conclusion is "Not bad, but not quite as good
as 990831" which of couse was boronized.

Startup was 100% today: 21/21.

The only hardware problem encountered which impacted the run was two crashes
of SPANNA, the Physics Operator's workstation. The RF group reports a problem
with transmitter #1, which prevented them from doing vacuum conditioning
between shots.

Run summary
SL developed a diverted upper null discharge. After attaining a full
length shot, worked on the ramp down to delay disruption. There is one
shot (017) in this group in which the gas feed was turned off so that
the density decay could be measured. This is a continuation of the wall
loading experiment that was begun yesterday.

SL Wolfe became bored and suggested attempting an Ohmic H Mode. The
basic shot was reloaded from 990831015. The first attempt at this
reload failed because the wrong segment was loaded. With the correct
segment and with update of the predictors and following a TF
modification to lower the q, an H-mode was obtained on the last shot of
the day (021).

Details of development are contained in the SL summary.

Spanna crashed twice in the course of the run.

Started PCS. Loaded shot 1000418016 as the starting point. This is a
shot with nl04 8e19 and and is lower than the highest density achieved on 4/18.

Did coldstart and completed at 19-APR-2000 08:15:59.80
