| Physics operator summary for run 1000504: MP # 266 -- Beam Conditioning MP # 265 -- CXRS Commissioning SL: Bill Rowan PO: R. Granetz EO: G. Dekow Summary: Three different tasks were worked on today. DNB and CXRS commissioning is coming along; RF operation of D and E at nearly 3 MW was fairly reliable today, and J3 and J4 were running simultaneously at 0.5 MW by the end of the day; and the LPI was able to repeatedly trigger prompt disruptions using double-lithium pellets with a small amount of silver powder sandwiched between them. Plasma startup was very reliable, even after disruptions. The run was delayed until noon because of a wide-area power failure that occurred last evening, necessitating the resetting of many pumps and other systems this morning. The only other problem was a partial failure of the data acquisition on shot 09. Scorecard: 11 plasmas 1 fizzle 0 duds 2 tests 0 aborted ---------- 14 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Thursday, 04 May 2000. Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00. ECDC overnight in D2, turn off 2 hours before run Power system setup as on last shot on Wednesday (1000503023). Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED The following gate valves should be enabled, assuming no vacuum problems: VUV and ECE Run Plan: --------- Start plasma operations from a reload of the last shot from Wednesday, and proceed with DNB conditioning and CXRS commissioning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: A POWER FAILURE OCCURRED LAST NIGHT AROUND 22:15. This has resulted in a 3.5 hour delay in the start of the run, in order to restart pumps, reset gate valves, etc. Because of the power failure, we only got a few hours of ECDC (in D2) last night. Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found Loaded 1000503023 (last shot from yesterday) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Test of EF4 under PLC control, at the request of Bill Cochran. Lots of spikes on a gate signal. Bill wants to do the test again after changing a ground. Shot 02 -- Test of EF4 under PLC control, this time with RF also. Result: fewer spikes. Fizzle detector prevented the RF from firing. Next shot: try for plasma. Pre-fill puff is set to 12 ms, since the DNB valve will be enabled. Shot 03 -- Fizzle. Br0 was too negative. Gas fill was lower than normal, but still within OK range. Next shot: change Br0 offset by +1 mT. Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good full-length shot. Current rise was not the best... Bz didn't rise as fast as normal. Next shot: no PCS changes. Enable LPI at 1.3 s. Shot 05 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.43 s. Prf=2 MW. H-mode. Lithium pellet at t=1.30 s, with P-mode until t=1.41 s. Flux loop F08 had a baseline offset. Next shot: repeat. Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.3 MW. EDA H-mode. No Li pellet. H/D=3-4%. Good heating. Next shot: repeat. Fire a silver-dusted single Li pellet at t=1.5 s Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.9 MW for 0.5 s ! Multiple EDA H-modes. Ag-coated Li pellet went in, but didn't disrupt the plasma. No P-mode either. Big spikes on the X-rays and 2pi bolo at the H-L back-transitions. Weak or non-existant enhanced neutron modes. Next shot: repeat. Fire a double-Li Ag-sandwiched pellet at 1.5 s. Short break for cell and power room access. Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Double-Li Ag-sandwiched pellet successfully killed the plasma. Prf=2.9 MW for 0.5 s. Multiple EDA H-modes. Next shot: see if we can still get a plasma after that disruption. Also try another silver-sandwiched double-Li pellet at 1.5 s. Shot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. Double-Li Ag-sandwiched pellet successfully killed the plasma again. Lots of DAQ problems. Probably had RF, and an H-mode, but we'll never know for sure. Next shot: repeat. Fire a tungsten-doped Li pellet at 1.5 s. Delay for Josh to try and figure out the DAQ problems. Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.6 MW. Multiple EDA H-modes. The tungsten-doped Li pellet killed the plasma, but not promptly. Next shot: repeat. LPI will fire a plain Li pellet at t=1.4 s. Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Nice long steady EDA H-mode. Prf=2.6 MW for 0.5 s. Li pellet at t=1.4 s. Next shot: repeat. Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.6 MW. Multiple EDA H-modes. Li pellet at t=1.4 s. J3 and J4 were on simultaneously late in the RF pulse. Next shot: repeat. Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.6 MW. One long and one short EDA H-mode. Li pellet at 1.4 s. Next shot: repeat. Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.6 MW. Nice long steady EDA H-mode. Li pellet at 1.4 s. End of run. |
