avden= 0.885
TCI = 2.72
RFheat = 6.21

023 plasma -H-modes
D and J faulted

next shot: ramp to obtain some RF data
shorten pulse to avoid EF4 overload
024 fizzle
025 fizzle
026 plasma
D-port ran
J-port faulted but ran bit longer

Summary:

J-port heating effectiveness (relative to D-port) was improved
compared to friday, but J is still less effective than D. We began a
density scan to test the antenna operational density limit. In the
two discharges we had, a solution appears feasible, but we need
further discharges to complete the density scan.

Physics operator summary for run 1000516:

Boronization recovery shots, and
MP 268 -- ICRF Commissioning

Session leader: S. Wukitch
Physics operator: R. Granetz
Engineering operators: B. Cochran/G. Dekow

Summary: Not bad for a post-boronization run. There was a preponderance of
fizzles, but no major problems. Shot 18 was an excellent
comparison of the D-antenna and the J3+J4 antenna in a limited
discharge (i.e. L-mode). It had nearly identical staircase RF
power programming, and showed only a slight difference in the
neutron production efficiency of the two RF systems. See the
session leader's summary for more details on the ICRF performance.

More than 200 nm of boron was deposited during yesterday evening's
boronization.

Overnight ECDC in D2 was done for 7 hours, stopping 2 hours prior to
the run

Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found

Loaded 1000516000 (saved from yesterday), based on shot 1000512001

Shot 01 -- Test; Usual Tuesday OH coax test.

Coax Resis (uohm)
---- ------------
OH1 1.00
OH2U 0.27
OH2L 0.30

Irby says 'Go'.

Shot 02 -- Test; 50 kA TF test under PLC control. Looks good.

Next shot: go for plasma.

Shot 03 -- Fizzle. Br0 is too negative.

Next shot: change Br0 by +0.001 T, add 2 ms to pre-fill puff,
and change IC_EF4 by +10 amps.

Shot 04 -- Fizzle. Field and gas look good.

Next shot: put IC_EF4 back were it was (remove 10 amps)

Shot 05 -- Fizzle. Fields and gas still looking good. No obvious
changes to make.

Next shot: change IC_EF4 by -10 amps (yes, negative), and
Br0 by -0.0003 T. If that doesn't do it, then I'll
reverse direction on EF4 tweaks.

Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. 1.0 MA, 5.2 T, diverted, EDA H-mode.
Prf=1.25 MW from D. J3 and J4 didn't run. Wp=100 kJ. Inner
gap=14 mm, outer gap=18 mm.

Next shot: repeat, trying to get J-port RF on.

Shot 07 -- Fizzle. Fields and gas look good.

Next shot: no changes, just try again

Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Same as shot 06, but now with 0.5 MW from J3.

Next shot: repeat, trying to get J4 going before we switch to
limited plasmas. Also, enable the argon valve for this shot.

Shot 09 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: no changes

Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Short ELMfree H-mode. J3 and J4 both came
on.

Next shot: change to a limited plasma. Set CLEARIN at -26 mm.
(Actually, copy wire 4 from segment 2 from shot 1000512016.)

Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inboard wall. D-antenna worked
well, but J3, J4 didn't. Outer gap was less than 1 cm.

Next shot: move RCUR in by 5 mm to expand outer gap to 18 mm.

Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inboard wall. Outer gap=17 mm.
D and J3 ran well. J4 ran, but not too well.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 13 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: no changes, try again.

Shot 14 -- Plasma. 1 MA disruption at t=1.37 s. D ran well, J3 so-so,
J4 not to good. Barely limited on inner wall.

Next shot: tweak density after t=0.8 s to keep it even more constant

Shot 15 -- Plasma. 1 MA disruption at t=1.49 s. All three RF systems worked
very well.

Next shot: repeat, no changes

Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited (barely) on inner wall. All RF systems
worked well. H/D=3% (all day so far). Plasma startup was good
on this shot (finally).

Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes. Try to overlap D and J3,J4.

Shot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. All RF systems executed
nice staircases. J port heating efficiency looks nearly as good
as D port (neutrons).

Next shot: repeat one more time.

Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. All RF systems executed
nearly identical staircases. J port heating efficiency looks
nearly as good as D port (neutrons). Crummy plasma startup.

Next shot: repeat one more time, this time with just D and J4 (turn
off J3). Also puff krypton at t=1.50 s.

Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. J4 did not run well at
the highest power setting. I forget to ask for the krypton valve
to be enabled.

Next shot: One more repeat. Also, enable krypton valve. Krypton
puff is still at t=1.5 s.

Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. D and J4 antennas both
ran well. (J3 was off). John Rice did not see any krypton.

Next shot: change to diverted plasmas by reloading RCUR and CLEARIN
from segment 2 of shot 10. Also move the krypton puff to t=0.5 s.

Shot 21 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: change IC_EF4 by +10 amps

Shot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Diverted. EDA H-mode. Still no sign of
krypton. Max Prf=2.3 MW, with J4 and D overlapped.

Next shot: raise density to nl_04=1.5e20 m-2, and increase
krypton puff from 60 to 100 ms.

Shot 23 -- Plasma. VDE disruption at t=1.46 s, due to EF1U railing. I'll
have to shorten the flattop, since the EF1's are already set at
the administrative limit. nl_04=1.4e20 m-2. No significant RF.

Next shot: shorten flattop to 1.2 seconds (from 1.5 s). (Ip,
ZCUR, CLEARIN, IC_EF4, and NL_04 shortened/modified) Also,
reduce krypton puff back to 60 ms.

Shot 24 -- Fizzle. Chalk it up to the preceding upward disruption.

Next shot: try again, no changes

Shot 25 -- Fizzle. Nothing obvious.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill puff by 2 ms.

There is a delay due to a computer crash.

Shot 26 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.38 s, partway down the current ramp.
Prf=1.5 MW, from D only.

End of run

May 16 2000 12:43:02:030PM1000516013Robert GranetzShot 13 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: no changes, try again.
May 16 2000 01:03:08:780PM1000516014Robert GranetzShot 14 -- Plasma. 1 MA disruption at t=1.37 s. D ran well, J3 so-so,
J4 not to good. Barely limited on inner wall.

Next shot: tweak density after t=0.8 s to keep it even more constant
May 16 2000 01:30:25:560PM1000516015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Plasma. 1 MA disruption at t=1.49 s. All three RF systems worked
very well.

Next shot: repeat, no changes
May 16 2000 02:06:21:907PM1000516016Robert GranetzShot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited (barely) on inner wall. All RF systems
worked well. H/D=3% (all day so far). Plasma startup was good
on this shot (finally).

Next shot: repeat, no PCS changes. Try to overlap D and J3,J4.
May 16 2000 02:06:03:187PM1000516017Robert GranetzShot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. All RF systems executed
nice staircases. J port heating efficiency looks nearly as good
as D port (neutrons).

Next shot: repeat one more time.
May 16 2000 02:32:05:860PM1000516018Robert GranetzShot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. All RF systems executed
nearly identical staircases. J port heating efficiency looks
nearly as good as D port (neutrons). Crummy plasma startup.

Next shot: repeat one more time, this time with just D and J4 (turn
off J3). Also puff krypton at t=1.50 s.
May 16 2000 02:51:01:810PM1000516019Robert GranetzShot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited on inner wall. J4 did not run well at
the highest power setting. I forget to ask for the krypton valve
to be enabled.

Next shot: One more repeat. Also, enable krypton valve. Krypton
puff is still at t=1.5 s.
May 16 2000 03:09:31:747PM1000516020Robert GranetzShot 20 -- Plasma.

May 16 2000 03:26:56:920PM1000516021Robert GranetzShot 21 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: change IC_EF4 by +10 amps
May 16 2000 03:47:49:810PM1000516022Robert GranetzShot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Diverted. EDA H-mode. Still no sign of
krypton. Max Prf=2.3 MW, with J4 and D overlapped.

Next shot: raise density to nl_04=1.5e20 m-2, and increase
krypton puff from 60 to 100 ms.
May 16 2000 04:17:11:953PM1000516023Robert GranetzShot 23 -- Plasma. VDE disruption at t=1.46 s, due to EF1U railing. I'll
have to shorten the flattop, since the EF1's are already set at
the administrative limit. nl_04=1.4e20 m-2. No significant RF.

Next shot: shorten flattop to 1.2 seconds (from 1.5 s). (Ip,
ZCUR, CLEARIN, IC_EF4, and NL_04 shortened/modified) Also,
reduce krypton puff back to 60 ms.
May 16 2000 04:28:01:090PM1000516024Robert GranetzShot 24 -- Fizzle. Chalk it up to the preceding upward disruption.

Next shot: try again, no changes
May 16 2000 04:45:08:670PM1000516025Robert GranetzShot 25 -- Fizzle. Nothing obvious.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill puff by 2 ms.
May 16 2000 04:57:20:717PM1000516025Robert GranetzThere is a delay due to a computer crash.
May 16 2000 05:06:53:513PM1000516026Robert GranetzShot 26 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.38 s, partway down the current ramp.
Prf=1.5 MW, from D only.

End of run
