Plan:

For the first part of the run we will be bring up RF power
after repairing arc damage in the E-antenna feed system.

At the same time we will establish a baseline for H-mode
confinement.

Run "best" case scenario: H/D < 5%, Prf_D+Prf_E > 2.5 MW
(steady) , Prf_J = 0, Ip = 1 MA. This will provide a baseline for
comparison with our best shots from previous campaigns.

Results:

After a slow start due to power systems and breaker problems, we
were successful in running the specified discharges. On shot 008 we
had 2.6 MW RF; 3 MW total (assuming 80% absorbed fraction for the
RF). The stored energy reached 0.16 MJ which is right on our
scaling for EDA H-modes, beta_N ~ 1.2. Radiated power is under
control (except for the natural impurity injections).

We should be able to use data from the following shots for
comparison with previous campaigns.

Mini-Proposal MP 269: ICRF-Induced Plasma Rotation Scaling Studies
(ICRF rotation effects at lower field).

One objective of this mini-proposal was to test the theoretical
prediction of Perkins et al. that ICRF - induced plasma rotation
in C-Mod should change from co- to counter-current as the ICRF
resonance is moved from the low to high field side of the tokamak.
The results of a half-day of running were very interesting but
not conclusive.

The toroidal magnetic field was first scanned down from
5.3T to 4.5T and then back up to 6.0T. The ICRF power was kept
constant during this scan at approximately 2 MW total, with D-port
at 1.1-1.2 MW and E-port at 0.8-0.9 MW. H-mode plasmas were
obtained at all fields between 4.5 and 5.3T. Baseline rotation measure-
ments were first done at 5.3 T (ICRF resonance at 0.48 cm to the LFS)
which indicated V_tor = 50 km /s (from HIREXjr). These plasmas (shots
13 & 14) were EDA H-modes with stored energy of about 95 kJ. The plasma
rotation was still observed to be in the co-current direction at
4.9 T on shot 15 (ICRF resonance at 4.6 cm to the HFS). The mean
V_tor was slightly lower than at 5.3 T, although the stored energy
was also lower (80 kJ). At 4.5 T (shots 15 & 16) the rotation
velocity indeed reversed sign to about -20 km /s. However, these
plasmas were quite different than the plasmas at 4.9T and 5.3T because
the ICRF heating was far off-axis (9.4 cm to the HFS). Evidence of
a hollow T_e profile was seen in that the central Thomson T_e was very
low. Also sawteeth were suppressed at about 1.2 s, presumably because
of a hollow current profile. Evidence of an internal transport barrier
(ITB) was also seen in that the central density was rising during
the H-mode phase to about 4 X 10^20.

The toroidal field was then adjusted to 5.9-6.0 T for shots 19-23. This
moved the ICRF resonance 9.4 cm to the LFS and would have allowed us to
compare the rotation in a discharge again with off-axis heating, but now
on the LFS where V_tor is predicted to always be in the co-current
direction. Unfortunately we were not able to carry out this comparison
because the D-port transmitter kept on tripping off, resulting in not
enough rf power to produce H-mode plasmas with appreciable rotation.

It is recommended that these experiments be continued in order to
complete the high field comparison at 5.8-6.0T. We would also propose
a "spin-off" mini-proposal based on the evidence of ITB formation at
low field (4.5 T) with off-axis heating. The thought here (per Martin
Greenwald) is that the normal co-rotation observed in C-Mod inhibits
formation of internal barriers by counter-acting the diamagnetic term
in E_r. By forcing the co-rotation to go through zero or reverse sign
(as was done in shots 16 & 17) the plasma gradient term in E_r would
then take over, leading to ITB formation.

Summary
_______

Both parts of the run were accomplished quite well.

H-modes with EDA W_mag practically at the levels of 96-98 campaigns were
obtained. Argon was switched off. RF up to 2.7MW was coupled from D and E.
Radiated power was about 40%, not great, but tolerable. H/D started below
4% but drifted up to about 5%.

ICRF at low fields was obtained. The rotation did not slow down for
4.9T, which places the resonance about 6cm inboard. However, at the
lowest fields, 4.5T, sawtooth suppression was observed, and associated
peaking of the density. During that period the rotation DID slow down
and slightly reverse. Attempts to do the same thing with the resonance on
the low-field side, at 6T were thwarted by the D-port failing. There
therefore remains some ambiguity about the results that needs more study.

zero at 1.05s. Density peaks very strongly on axis. Central Thomson Te is
very low. This is an extremely interesting shot.
