Run Summary for 1000601A - MP 269 ICRF Rotation

We were unsuccessful in completing this mini-proposal (MP 269). We
were frustrated by plasma fizzles and rf power shutdowns on D-port at
high toroidal field (6 T). Our objectives were to get high power, ICRF
heated H-modes (> 2 MW) at 5.7 T and 6.0 T and measure the toroidal
rotation from HIREXjr and sawtooth precursors. We also wanted to go
back to low field (4.5T - 4.7T) and reproduce discharges from 1000523
with internal density barrier formation and a reversal in V-tor (as
measured by HIREXjr).

We successfully made a baseline rotation measurement of V-tor at 5.3 T
with 2.2 MW of ICRF power (Shot 4). The stored energy was 95 kJ and
V-tor was about 40 km/s from HIREXjr. We also obtained rotation data
at 5.7 T on Shot 8, with 2.55 MW of ICRF power. The measured V-tor was
still about 40 km/s in the co-current direction with 100 kJ of stored
energy. The (H) cyclotron resonance was 5.6 cm to the LFS at 5.7T. At
6.0 T with the (H) resonance located 9.4 cm to the LFS, we could not
obtain high power (> 2 MW) H-modes because the D-port transmitter kept
on shutting down. We did obtain H-modes however with the 1.1 MW of
ICRF power provided by E-port (Shots 10, 12, and 14). The stored
energies on these shots were about 75-80 kJ and V-tor was measured to
be about 20 km / s from HIREXjr in the co-current direction. Because
the rf power was limited, We could not conclusively determine if an
ITB could be formed with the ICRF located far off-axis, as was the
case at 4.5 T. No evidence of density peaking was found. The values
of V-tor measured from sawtooth precursor were consistently higher
than those from HIREXjr.

The D-port transmitter shutdowns at 6.0 T must be fixed before this
mini- proposal is continued. Also, an entire day of run-time should be
set aside to do it properly. A shot by shot description of this misery
is included below for those who are interested.

MP 271 Pedestal Scaling

The plan is to continue the current/power scans started on 05/25 and
try to get good pedestal measurements at 1MA, 1,2MA and 1.4MA at different
vvalues of RF power.

The PO plan was:
1. Load shot 1000525002 and change current from 0.8 MA to 1 MA.
Take three shots at various RF levels

2. Increase current to 1.2 MA. Take three shots at various RF levels

3. Increase or decrease current based on feeling of SL

Run Summary.

Again, only a small portion of the MP was completed. We menaged eventually to get
some data at 1 MA. However, the edge conditions were apparently very different
from 05/25. L-H transitions did not occur on most of the shots untill late in the
RF pulse. Possible reason is that after the boronization the antennae injects too much impurities in
the edge when turned on and cool the edge down, preventing L-H transition.
The H-modes where quite different too. Some of them looked like EDA, but had lots of
"grass" on top of H-alpha signal, most of them looked more like type-III ELMy.
That undermined somewhat the idea of the scan, which was to compare pedestal parameters at different Ip/RF
power keeping all other plasma parameters unchanged.
Same dependance of the electron pressure pedestal amplitude and gradient on RF power was observed
as on 05/25, but with higher scatter. Also, gradP and P_ped were measured higher at higher Ip
(at const input power). At higher RF power values of total gradP higher than 5e6 Pa/m were observed

To complete the Ip/RF scan part of the MP271 we need to get reliable data at lower current (0.6MA),
preferably repeat 1MA scan with better wall conditions, and run at higher current looking for
changes in pedestal parameters when transition to ELM-free regime occurs at low q values.

Run Summary.

The first shot was a fizzle. With no changes, the second shot went
as planned. That characterized the first part of the day: every other
shot was good. BR, BZ, pressure, and breakdown time did not look that
much different for fizzles. This was the judgement of other PhysOps as
well. During the morning, I trimmed BZ and prefill downward. Prefill
was tending to climb. BZ may have started a bit high. The pressure
prior to a fizzle was approximately twice that for a plasma shot. This
is interesting, but I do not see how it could be the immediate cause of
the fizzles. May indicate something about wall conditioning.

When we changed to the second MP, we also changed the shot. An initial
problem with current rise, led me (with advice) to significantly reduce
the prefill. There were no more fizzles during the day.
