| Run Plan mp 233a Density limits (H-mode task force) Session Leader - Greenwald Phys Op - Irby mostly ============================ Plan: (run continues from 1000606) 1. scaling of pedestals/edge parameters near the density limit - in particular we will be varying Bt and Prf to try to get a wide range in beta. (The Rogers and Drake simulations have a significant dependence on the mhd alpha parameter.) 2. fluctuations near the density limit (both H/L and disruptive). The run follows the general approach of 980115 where we ran high density H-modes then ramped the current down to the density limit. The RF needs to be on steadily to the end of the shot. The plan is to start at 5.3T then move to 4.5T and finally to 6.0. The 6T shots will be ohmic and we will be looking at the disruptive limit only The outer gap should be in the range 1-1.5 cm so that we can get good data from the Lyman alpha array. ======================================================= Results: Problems - but interesting results were obtained. The bad news: The first part of the run was plagued with impurity injections coming of the E port antenna. These were clearly visible with the fast camera and resulted in impurity buildup and very high radiated power. The H-modes were lost early. We decided to lower the RF power and proceed in L-mode. At this point faults with the OH system shut us down for about 4 hours. The good news: When we returned we got 4 shots all L-mode the last 3 with ohmic alone. All 4 disrupted right at the empirical limit. We got good probe data on 016-018. Plunges were taken at 0.6, 0.85 and 1.1 seconds - these correspond to 0.37, 0.5, 1.0 times the limit. A quick look showed that there was a substantial increase in the potential and density fluctuations for the finaal scan. The fluctuation character also seemed to change: the ISat fluctuations were dominated by lower frequency features. These observations generally support the notion of the density limit as a transport collapse (as compared to a radiative collapse). Unfortunately the probe was damaged during an earlier run so we can't get the ExB convected flux. We do seem to have good Lyman alpha data. Aside from doing detailed analysis on these shots we still need to: 1. do similar experiments with limited plasmas - the limit is observed to be robust with respect to topology 2. vary the probe times during the last few hundred msec. We want to know if the change in fluctuations/transport occurs gradually or catastrophically. 3. run shots at different toroidal field - try to vary beta to compare to Rogers Drake theory. ================================ Shots suitable for further analysis include: 1000609001 1000609015 1000609016 1000609017 1000609018 |

| Physop Summary for 1000609 in support of MP233A SL: Greenwald PO: Irby/Granetz EO: Cochran/Dekow Engineering setup for Friday, 09 June 2000: ECDC in D2, for 2 hours prior to the run. Run begins at 9:00 and ends at 17:00. Power system setup as on 1000606014 Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled leave J-bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED The following gate valves should be enabled: ECE, VUV, DNB RF will be required as during the 1000606 run. This run is in support of MP233A --- Density Limits Results: We started the run where it left off on 6/6 with shot 1000606014. This shot indicated a successful density limit disruption, and the first shot from today was right on Martin's curve. Shot 3 only lasted about 0.8 s. Not sure why, but decided to blame Brian's probe. I didn't notice until it was too late that the gas pressure was rising at startup, resulting in a fizzle on shot 4. Dropping the prepuff on shot 5 by 2 ms did not fix the problem. Another 2 ms got a plasma back on shot 6. It looked like the e-port antenna was arcing and possibly doing in the plasma. Two arcs appear on the face of the antenna near top. It seemed pretty clear that they were emitting material into the plasma during the shot. The e-port side tiles are also getting pretty hot at the midplane. We tried various tweaks to reduce the arcs such as dropping zcur and reducing rcur, but we still had the problem. Martin finally asked that e-port be turned off. After shot 15 we also turned off d-port. Shots 16 and 17 were good shots for the ASP. Engineering Problems: We had duds on shots 11 and 12 caused by an OH2L crowbar. This problem cost us about 2 hours of run time. Three blown fuses were found after shot 12. The SCRs, gates, and timing checked out okay. Two OH2L test shots were taken at 5 and 10 kA, followed by a successful plasma shot. | Jun 9 2000 08:50:38:717AM | Martin Greenwald | Earlier work[1] has suggested that the tokamak density limit can be explained fully only by consideration of transport effects. While there is little dispute about the final stages of a density limit collapse - edge cooling via radiation then shrinkage of the current channel leading to MHD instability and disruption - theories based on edge power balance physics alone can not explain important aspects of density limit phenomenology. In particular, the power balance theories predict a density limit with strong dependence on input power and on impurity content. Neither of these dependences are generally observed. These classes of theories also have difficulty explaining the robustness of the density limit with respect to plasma configuration, divertor topology, or operational regime. Finally there is data from Alcator C, TEXT, and MTX (nee Alcator C) which show degradation of particle confinement or enhanced fluctuations in the vicinity of the limit. The work by Drake and Rogers suggest a specific turbulence mechanism for this phenomenon. The simulations show a boundary, above which fluctuations increase dramatically from nominal ``L'' mode levels. This boundary has somewhat complex parametric dependence but has much in common with the empirical limit derived in reference [1]. The edge pressure gradient is an important parameterization for the computationally derived boundary - thus we propose a power scan as part of this mp. We note in passing, the rough agreement with the L/H threshold of simulations carried out with the same code [4]. Recent studies by LaBombard [2] have suggested that the edge diffusivity increases strongly with local collisionality. Since the edge temperature is roughly fixed by parallel transport, this correlation is consistent with an increase in transport as the density is increased. A number of machines have reported a degradation in H-mode confinement as the density limit is approached. This effect apparently sets in at lower densities for P $\sim$ P$_{THRESHOLD}$. So far, C-Mod H-modes have been in this regime. With additional RF power we should be able to access the regime with P $>>$ P$_{THRESHOLD}$. [1] M.
