============================

Plan:

(run continues from 1000609)

We want to look at fluctuations near the density limit (both H/L and
disruptive).
Data from the previous run showed a substantial increase in
fluctuations
and autocorrelation near the density limit. Today we will:

1.Fire the scanning probe at various times before the limit to map
out
the change in fluctuations and transport.

2. Measure the convected flux with new probe head.

3. Compare to limited plasma

4. If time is available - run at lower field

The run follows the general approach of 980115 where we ran high
density H-modes then ramped the current down to the density limit.
The TF needs to be kept on during the initial part of the IP
rampdown.

The outer gap should be in the range 1-1.5 cm so that we can get
good data from the Lyman alpha array.

=======================================================

Results:

We finished #1 and #2 and started on #3 of the run plan. We
got lots of good data.

Successful ASP and FSP scans were done in divertor plasmas covering
0.4 - 1.0 x limit. We should have the data to characterize the
fluctuations across this range. As before, the fluctuation levels
and autocorrelation times for fluctuations at the separatrix
increase near the density limit.

We also got good data from the PCI. It showed the growth of
incoherent low frequency fluctuations (<100 kHz) as the limit was
approached. There was also a clear shift toward lower frequencies.

Summary:

Good run. No OH tests were done and we went straight to plasma shots.
Although every shot ended in high density disruption (as it was supposed to),
the machine ran very well. There was only 3 fizzles. One happened when PO decided that
the prefill pressure was too low and added 2 msec to the prefill pulse. That resulted in
very slow current rise. Two others occurred because of small Br/Bz drifts.
Some lower x-point position tweaks and current waveform tweaks were executed to
satisfy scanning probes and session leader (see details below). Starting from shot 15
we ran inner wall limited plasma.

Scorecard:

24 shots
3 fizzles
21 plasma

1000620020 Plasma. Right gap is too large (3 cm).

For next shot: disable J-bottom gas valve, increase RCUR 1 cm to make
right gap smaller
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1000620021 wolfe sitting in for Dmitri-
Shot 21 is ok, but right gap is too small early.

next shot: Rcur fro .665 to .662 at 0.5sec, to increase
right gap by 6mm early.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1000620022 Plasma. Disrupted at .55 sec. One of the reasons may be that it gets to q95=3
at that point

For next shot: lower max Ip to 0.9 MA
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1000620023 Plasma. Disrupted at 1 sec at density limit.

For next shot: no changes
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1000620024 Last shot. Plasma.
