| Run 1000901 -- MP #268 - ICRF Conditioning EO: Dekow, Parkin PO: Granetz SL: Goetz, Wukitch (in absentia) The objective of this MiniProposal is to condition the D-, E-, and J-port antennas and make them ready for plasma physics operation. A secondary objective is to document the performance of the J-Port antenna after the changes/improvements of the recent up-to-air period. As with Run 1000830, the run started with conditioning shots. Each antenna was fired separately into an inner-wall limited, 1MA, 5.2T plasma with nl04 ~ 1. This was to ensure L-mode conditions so that inter-antenna comparisons are straightforward. Also, the J-port antenna was fired first during the discharge to see if any of the problems from 1000830 were due to plasma conditions. The D- and E-port antennas conditioned up easily with 1.45-1.5MW being launched from each antenna after a few shots. Both antennas performed well throughout this L-mode period with no faults during the day. The J-port antenna conditioned better today compared to 1000830, that is the number of faults were greatly reduced. However, there was still quite a bit of glowing on the antenna and many impurity injections. Power ramps were used to try and get around this condition and these were successful in getting to higher launched powers (up to 1.2MW) but resulted in disruptions due to the injections. During this conditioning at a plasma current of 1 MA the disruptions started to occur at lower and lower powers. Eventualy it was necessary to lower the power to 400kW (200kW each pair) to get the antenna to run cleanly. The current was changed to 0.8MA and conditioning was repeated. It is interesting to note that the "glow" and the "hot spots" on the antenna changed location. The glow appears to move over one strap toward K-port and the "hot spot", equivalently, the impurity source, moved to the upper corner near H-port (these locations are the strap nearest H-port and the lower H-port corner at 1MA). The total achievable power was raised to ~1.2MW during this set of conditioning shots just as at 1MA. Today, the performance of the J-port antenna was not quite equal to that of the D- and E-port antennas. It appears that the performance today was better than that on 1000830. The central temperature increase, stored energy increase, and the neutron rate are slightly lower (~15%) for the J-port antenna compared to the other two antennas. This observation is only true when the total power is low or during the ramps when the impurity production is low. A definite comparison awaits a power absorption calculation for all the antennas. Shots 17-19 were used to determine if the relative phase of the 4 current straps of the J-port antenna was responsible for the observed behavior. These shots had [0,1,1,0]*!pi and [0,1,-0.5,0.5]*!pi phasing versus the [0,1,0,1]*!pi (or nearly) phasing of the previous shots. The shots with [0,1,1,0]*!pi phasing resulted in no heating while the shot with [0,1,-0.5,0.5]*!pi phasing had just a little heating. Overall summary: D- and E-port antennas are well conditioned. The J-port antenna performance is nearly equal to that of the D- and E-port antennas at low power or when impurity production is low. There are still impurity generation problems when the power is raised above ~800kW or when the integrated power causes a "hot-spot" to form. These problems must be solved before this antenna can be deemed conditioned. | Physics operator summary for run 1000901: MP 268 -- ICRF conditioning Session leader: John Goetz Physics operator: R. Granetz Engineering operators: B. Cochran/B. Parkin Summary: ECDC in D2 between shots keeps the H/D ratio down at 4-5%. I recommend that it become standard operating procedure for RF heating runs. J-port worked well up to about 1.0 MW, but above that it disrupted the plasma. It's heating efficiency is not much less than D and E. See the session leader's summary for more details on the RF performance. The tokamak ran very well today, and except for a no-TF shot, we had 100% startup reliability. Scorecard: 24 plasmas 0 fizzles 1 dud (no TF) 0 tests 0 aborted ---------- 25 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Thursday, 01 September 2000: Overnight ECDC in D2, stopping 1-2 hours prior to the run. Granetz Go back to the 1 MA inner-wall limited discharges from this past Wednesday and continue to condition J-port. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overnight ECDC in D2 was started, but it shut off around 23:00. ECDC was restarted around 05:45 and continued to 07:45. Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found Loaded shot 1000830019 (1.0 MA, 5.2 T, inner-wall limited) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Plasma. Nice full-length discharge. Ip=0.96 MA, inner-wall limited, nl_04=1.0e20 m-2. Outer gap=10-12 mm (not using limiter Bp coils). H/D=4-5%. J-port=0.5 MW, D and E=0.25 MW. No overlapping power. Next shot: no PCS changes. Raise RF power. Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. The startup is very good. Outer gap=10-11 mm. Prf_J=0.7 MW, Prf_D,E=0.5 MW. No overlap. No faulting. H/D=5%. There was one brief flash from the J-port antenna (lower corner near H-port). Next shot: no PCS changes. Ramp J, increase D and E. Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Outer gap=10-11 mm. Prf_J=0.8-0.85 MW, Prf_D,E=0.75 MW. No overlap. No faulting. H/D=5-6%. There was one brief flash from the J-port antenna (lower corner near H-port). Next shot: no PCS changes. Raise RF power. Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Outer gap=11-12 mm. Prf_J=0.8-1.0 MW, Prf_D,E=1.0 MW. No overlap. One brief fault on J3 at 0.75 s. A brief flash followed by some glowing on the J-port Faraday screen. H/D=7-8%. We might want to do some between-shot ECDC in D2 soon. Next shot: no PCS changes. Raise RF power. Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Outer gap=12 mm. Max RF=1.28 MW on each of the three antennas. No overlap. One fault on J3. H/D=7-8%. Next shot: no PCS changes. See if H/D comes down with the ECDC. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. J3 and J4 are faulting more. D and E look good (1.30 and 1.38 MW respectively). H/D clearly dropped...down to 5%. Next shot: no PCS changes. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 15 minutes. Shot 07 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.86 s. Bright sparks from the upper and lower H-side corners of J-port. I think they caused the disruption. Next shot: no PCS changes. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 13 minutes. Shot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.41 s. Looks like a brick at 0.34 s. No ECDC will be done after this shot. Next shot: enable the DNB. Because of the high H2 gas loading from the DNB, I will decrease the pre-fill pulse to 10 ms. Shot 09 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.85 s. Looks like the lower corner of J-port again. Fill pressure was a touch low. Next shot: lower J-port power; DNB on again; increase pre-fill pulse to 12 ms. Shot 10 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.66 s. Lower H-corner of J-port again, this time at only 0.5 MW. H/D is about 5%. Next shot: lower RF power some more. Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good, full-length shot. H/D=6-8%. Prf_J=0.4 MW, Prf_D,E=1.45 MW. No bright spots on TV image of J-port antenna. Density creeps up during shot, maybe due to NINJA helium puffing. Next shot: start pushing up J-port power again. Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf_J=0.6 MW, Prf_D,E=1.45 MW, no overlap. No bright spots on J-port. H/D=9-10% ! Next shot: push J-port power up some more. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 13 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.80 s. Prf_J=0.8 MW. H/D=6-7%. Bright spot on J at usual corner. DNB is working well. Next shot: go back down to Prf_J=0.4 MW. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf_J,D,E=0.5 MW each. No bright spots on J. H/D signal may not have worked properly on this shot, since it's giving a value of 0-2%. Note: Earl says the H/D is correct. Next shot: raise J again. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 15 -- Dud. No TF, for unknown reasons. Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf_J,D,E=0.77 MW each; no overlap. H/D=5-6% (after a dud! Note that the DNB injects H2 even on a dud.) Next shot: change J-port phasing. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 17 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.86 s. Lots of bright spots from the Faraday screen on J-port, but not from the corners. H/D=5%. Peak Prf_J=0.8 MW. Next shot: change J-port phasing. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot, but there were still some bright spots on the J-port antenna. H/D=4-5%. Prf_J,D,E=0.7 MW; no overlap. Next shot: change J-port phasing again. There will be no DNB on the next shot, so I've increase the pre-fill pulse to 20 ms (from 12 ms) to compensate. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Only one bright spot on J-port. Neither the DNB nor the NINJA were on on this shot. Density remained very constant. Prf_J,D,E=0.7 MW; no overlap. No H/D data. Next shot: lower Ip to 0.8 MA (from 1.0 MA, which it's been at all day until now.) Also switch RF phasing back to normal. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.8 MA. No bright spots on J-port. Prf_J,D,E=0.8 MW each, no overlap. H/D=5%. NINJA was back on (puffing helium, as before). Next shot: no PCS changes. Try increasing RF power some more. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Big marfe. H/D=4-5%. Bright spot on J-port seems to initiate the marfe, which then remains for the rest of the shot. Prf_J,D,E=0.9 MW each, no overlap. Next shot: increase Prf a little more. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf_J,D,E=1.0 MW, no overlap. H/D=4-5% Lots of marfing. Next shot: increase Prf some more. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 23 -- Plasma. Good shot, but terminates halfway down the current ramp. Prf_J,D,E=1.0 MW, no overlap. H/D=4-5%. Next shot: increase Prf some more. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 24 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.84 s. Prf_J=1.1 MW. Bright spot stayed on for several video frames, then the plasma disrupted. H/D=4-5% Next shot: no PCS changes. We are now doing ECDC in D2 between shots. 10 minutes. Shot 25 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.79 s. Prf_J=1.2 MW. No video on this shot. H/D=4-5%. End of run. |
