| Run summary for Tuesday, 19 Sept 2000 MP 280A -- Edge pedestals and H-mode character during current ramps Session leader: Pedersen/Granetz Physics operator: Jim Irby (1) Measure dependence of edge pedestal widths (ne, Te, and x-ray) on dIp/dt in EDA H-mode (2) Determine if the ELMfree-EDA boundary is affected by dIp/dt Dependence of the pedestal width and/or the H-mode type on dIp/dt probably implies a sensitivity to edge current. SUMMARY: We got the long steady EDA H-modes that we wanted at Ip=0.8 and 1.0 MA. (We also ran at Ip=1.1 MA, but couldn't keep a constant EDA). There was a barely discernible effect of dIp/dt on the x-ray pedestal width at 1.0 MA. It was much smaller than we had expected, and was nearly masked by the well-established dependence on Ip. At 0.8 MA, it was not clear that we saw any effect of dIp/dt on the x-ray pedestal. Similarly, the edge Thomson scattering did not see any clear dependence. However, the visible continuum profile (representative of ne) showed a strong variation with dIp/dt. Good shots to look at are: 1000919006 (0.8 MA, dIp/dt = +/- 0.9 MA/s) 1000919007 (0.8 MA, dIp/dt = +/- 0.9 MA/s) 1000919016 (1.0 MA, dIp/dt = +/- 1.0 MA/s) 1000919086 (1.0 MA, dIp/dt = +/- 1.25 MA/s) We could not find a consistent dependence of the ELMfree/EDA boundary on dIp/dt. For some reason, trying to ramp at 1.5 MA/s resulted in three disruptions in a row, all caused by large impurity injections just as the current ramping began (shots 8,9,10). The D and E antenna performance was very good today, with steady RF pulses lasting 0.7 s at power levels of 2.1-2.4 MW being the norm. Testing of the J-port antenna, now with dipole phasing, was being carried out in a piggyback mode for much of the run, and it seemed to be doing much better than in previous runs. We handed over the last hour or so of the run to the RF group for dedicated testing of both J-port and the building's fire alarm system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The primary PCS tasks required for our MP are to run a set of shots around Ip=0.8 MA, then 1.1 MA (and also 0.9 and 1.0 MA if time allows). At each current level, we want to have several 100 kA current ramps (+/- 50 kA around mean) in both positive and negative directions during a long EDA H-mode, at two different ramp rates of about 0.5 MA/s and 1.0 MA/s (and maybe somewhere in between, depending on what we see). That will most likely use up the run time, but if not, we have a few other things we'd like to try (RF power thresholds, J-port testing, etc.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.8 MA, steady. D-port faulted early, E-port gave 1.2 MW from t=0.5 to 1.2 s. Long EDA H-mode, but started a little late because of the low power. X-ray widths were 5.5 mm on outboard and 2.0 mm on top, and very constant. Next shot: repeat; re-tune D-port Shot 02 -- Plasma. Great shot. 0.8 MA, steady. Both D and E ran beautifully. Prf=2.3 MW, very constant from t=0.5 to 1.14 s. Long, steady EDA H-mode. X-ray widths were 6 mm on outboard (10 mm in from LCFS) and 2 mm on top (1.5 mm in from LCFS), and very constant. Textbook! Next shot: Ip ramps. Shot 03 -- Fizzle Shot 04 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.53 s. Shot 05 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.92 s. Got one full Ip ramp (+) before the disruption. Prf=2.4 MW. EDA H-mode. Outboard x-ray pedestal width doesn't show much change, if any. dIp/dt=0.4 MA/s for this shot. The visible continuum pedestal width does show some variation with the Ip ramp. Next shot: Ip ramps, with dIp/dt set for 1.0 MA/s Shot 06 -- Plasma. Great shot. Got all 4 Ip ramps (2+, 2-). Prf=2.0 MW. Long EDA. The 4 ramps show up on lots of signals, including D-alpha and neutrons. The effect is hard to see on the x-ray widths, although the pedestal height is strongly affected. The visible continuum pedestal width is doing some really strange things. Next shot: Ip ramp, with longer ramp times. Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Got 2.5 longer Ip ramps at 0.9 MA/s. May be something showing up on x-ray widths, but it's still not an obvious effect. On the other hand, the visible continuum width is changing drastically with dIp/dt... 10 mm for one direction and 2 mm for the other direction (2*halfwidth). Thomson doesn't show any effect. Next shot: Ip ramps, with faster dIp/dt (asking for 1.5 MA/s) Shot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.72 s. Shot 09 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.80 s. Shot 10 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.70 s. Obviously the machine doesn't want to do this. Next shot: load the 1.1 MA, constant current waveform. Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. 1.1 MA. Multiple H-modes, more ELMfree than EDA. We need EDA so we can get steady-state H-modes. The E-port antenna faulted, so there was only 1.1 MW from D. Next shot: repeat. Re-tune E-port antenna. Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Multiple H-modes, with some ELMfree characteristics. Prf=2.1 MW. It looks like we won't get long EDA's at this high a plasma current. Next shot: load in the 1.0 MA, constant current waveform. Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. One short ELMfree, followed by a long constant EDA H-mode. Towards the end of the flattop, J-port comes on and boosts the RF power to 4 MW. It's performance today is comparable to D and E, both in heating and in impurity generation. Next shot: ramp Ip at 1 MA/s, starting at t=0.70 s. Shot 14 -- Test cycle. No power. Shot 15 -- Test cycle. No power. Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot, even though it disrupted at t=1.2 s. Got 4 Ip ramps (2+, 2-). Prf=2.1 MW. Long EDA H-mode. At this Ip, 1.0 MA, there's more of a dIp/dt effect on the edge x-ray pedestal width than at 0.8 MA. But it's still not as clean as we expected. Next shot: Ip ramps at 0.5 MA/s, starting at t=0.70 s. Shot 17 -- Plasma. Multiple H-modes, some ELMfree and some EDA, which makes it difficult to draw any conclusions about pedestal widths and dIp/dt dependence. Next shot: Ip ramps at 1.25 MA/s, starting at t=0.70 s. Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Disrupts at t=1.41 s. EDA H-mode lasts through 4 ramps. Again, there is a dIp/dt small effect on the edge x-rays, but other things, like Ip dependence, tend to be even bigger. End of MP 280A Hand over the run to the RF group for further J-port comparison tests. |

| Engineering setup for Tuesday, 19 September 2000, 1000919: The run will be in support of MP280A Edge pedestals and H-mode character during current ramps Nominal operations at 5.3 T, 800 kA, but with small Ip ramps Overnight ECDC in Deuterium, stopping 1-2 hours prior to the run. Operators should be prepared for between shot ECDC Power system setup as on 1000915001 (there will not be a TF ramp however) ICRF Power: D+E approx 2 MW, from 0.50 to 1.10 seconds J-Port late in shot in 2 strap mode as possible Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled The following gate valves should be enabled: ECE, VUV Run begins at 9:00 and ends at 17:00 Summary: Machine ran well today. J-Port in two strap configuration is working extremely well. Bob and Thomas got the shots they wanted but not necessarily the results they expected. Long lasting EDA modes with reliable RF power were produced. John Rice reports that moly is coming up and it's probably time to boronize. We found that the Ip ramps were responsible for some of the disruptions early in the run. It was not clear what was coming into the plasma before the disruptions. Chris Boswell reports several strong unidentified lines, and John Rice could not really blame the disruptions on moly injections. The last shot of the day was a fizzle, so we missed seeing results with all the antennas overlapping for an extended length of time. However, on shot 13 we had all three antennas on for about 150 ms with a total power of about 4 MW. Stored energy went up to 180 kJ with only 1.4 MW or radiated power indicated on the 2Pi diode. Te rose to over 2.7 kV, and neuts exceeded 7e13/s. Problems: Lost a couple of shots to initialization problems. Had a couple of fizzles for no clear reason. A fire alarm did in one shot and caused a delay. We lost some magnetics traq_2 data on shot 11.
