| MP#267 Redo of "Dependence of SOL Fluctuations and Particle Transport on Collisionality" - Day 1 Session Leader - B. LaBombard Phys Op - J. Irby ============================================================================== Overall objectives of MP#267: "The purpose of these experiments is to explore the dependence of SOL fluctuation characteristics and attendant cross-field particle transport on the collisionality of the SOL." Reason for today's run: The purpose of today's run was to redo the first run day outlined in MP#267. The last time we ran this MP, the Lyman-alpha array was not operating. Also we did not get a lot of good plasmas. The goal was to complete a fine density scan with ASP and FSP probes reaching the separatrix and with the Lyman-alpha array working. Today's result: We were very successful today. We got the fine density scan we were looking for, with ASP,FSP & Ly-alpha systems operating. As a bonus, we also got a lot of CII and CIII plume images from the 'burping' FSP probe (see Sanjay's entries under the EDGE topic in the logbook). From these, we hope to infer the magnitude of Er and perhaps its variation across the SOL under a variety of collisionalities. We even got a couple of ohmic H-modes at Bt=5.2 tesla and Ip=0.8 MA! (see shots 12 and 13). The first time this happened the ASP got toasted because the targeting changed during th H-mode. This resulting in a disruption - oops! On shot 13, we eliminated the third probe scan (at 1.2 seconds) and the Ohmic H-mode occurred again, this time evolving from Elm-free to a dithering mode without a disruption. By the way, the ohmic H-modes occurred despite the fact that we were injecting C2D4 from the burping probe on every shot, beginning with shot 3. (Those who worry about the amount of C2D4 that we inject from the burping probe and its impact on the plasma, please take note.) We were hoping that we might find evidence of a negative Er near the separatrix in low density ohmic L-mode plasmas. But, even with the probe inserted as deep as we dared, no negative Er was detected. Analysis of data from this set of discharges should allow us to compute Deff profiles across the SOL for a variety of collisionalities and to relate changes in particle transport to fluctuation characteristics. On this run day, the ASP probe head had a North-South probe spacing of 6 mm, while on the previous attempt (100517) the probe spacing was 4 mm. A comparison of fluctuation spectra obtained by the two probe arrangements could be enlightening. Shot notes: Shot 1 - 0.8 MA, 5.2 tesla, NL04 around 1, no probes firing. Shot 2 - NL04 around .85 ASP N,S in Vf mode, E,W in single sweep mode FSP N,S in VF mode, E,W in swept double probe mode. Probes firing at .7, 9.5, 1.2 seconds No C2D4 injected on this shot. ASP and FSP make it to LCFS Shot 3 - NL04 around .85 ASP N,S in Vf mode, E,W in single sweep mode FSP N,S in VF mode, E,W in swept double probe mode. Probes firing at .7, 9.5, 1.2 seconds C2D4 turned on for this shot and the rest of the run Plasma disrupts at .72 seconds, probably from ASP being over-inserted. Shot 4 - NL04 around .8 ASP N,S in Vf mode, E,W in single sweep mode FSP N,S in VF mode, E,W in swept double probe mode. Probes firing at .7, 9.5, 1.2 seconds ASP still over-inserted on first and third scans.
