Physics operator summary for run 1001115:

MP #268 RF conditioning
MP #236 H-mode pedestal asymmetry with reversed field

Session leader: R. Granetz/T. Sunn Pedersen
Physics operator: R. Granetz

Summary: This was a moderately successful run as far as physics goes. We
got a number of 0.8 MA discharges with H-modes in reversed field.
The threshold ICRF power was about 2.2 MW. The primary result was
that the locations of the top and outboard x-ray pedestals were
the SAME with reversed field as they are with normal field. So
the first goal of this MP has been accomplished. The up/down argon
asymmetry, on the other hand, is reversed from the normal field
case. The remainder of the MP, which involved making the same
measurements at 1.0 and 1.2 MA, was not accomplished and will have
to be rescheduled. The RF performance was excellent, with many
long steady pulses (0.9 s) at 2-3 MW. All three antennas were
running simultaneously, although E-port was at reduced power
compared to D and J4. ECDC in D2 was done between shots and
generally kept the H/D ratio at 5-7%.

Startup was not any more reliable than during the preceding weeks,
and computer problems caused a long delay late in the day.

MP #268 RF conditioning
MP #236 H-mode pedestal asymmetry with reversed field

Session leader: Granetz/Pedersen
Physics operator: Granetz

ECDC in D2 overnight, ending 2 hours before the run.

Run starts at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1001107020.

Gas setup

fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED
fill B-side upper with 35 psi of D2 Hybrid DISABLED, for ECDC
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
leave J-bot as is Hybrid DISABLED

We would like the following gate valves should be enabled:
ECE, VUV, Beast

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run Plan:

Start with 0.8 MA, lower null plasma. We probably need at least 2.5 MW of
ICRF for >200 ms. Ideally we'd like 3+ MW for 0.5 s, but we'll take what
we can get. Assuming we do indeed get H-modes with reversed field, we would
then try it at 1.0 MA, and then at 1.2 MA. Argon puffing will also be
required for JR to get up/down argon profiles.

I'll load segment 1 from 1001109022 (last shot from last week), segment 2
from 1001107020, and segment 3 from 1001109022, except I'll set the density
to in segment 2 to nl_04=0.7e20 m-2 and in segment 3 to nl_04=1.0e20 m-2.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overnight ECDC in D2.

Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found

Loaded segments and made modifications as listed above.
EFC turn-on time had to be changed again from t=-30 ms to t=-40 ms.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ECDC in D2 will be done between some shots today.

Shot 01 -- Test of camac, computers, and shot cycle. All OK.

Shot 02 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: change IC_EF4 from +1335 to +1320 A.

Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Ip=0.84 MA, Bt=5.2 T, nl_04=0.7e20 m-2.
Prf=1.07 MW from t=0.6 to 1.5 s. (0.5 MW from each of D and J4).

Next shot: repeat

Shot 04 -- Fizzle. Late breakdown.

Next shot: tweak Br0 and pre-fill gas puff.

ECDC in D2 done between shots.

Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=1.6 MW (D,E,J4=0.5,0.5,0.6 MW),
t=0.6-1.5 s, no faults. Breakdown looks a little better.
H/D=2.5% from CX, 5% from spectroscopy. Thomson scattering is
having some control problems.

No ECDC after this shot.

Shot 06 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.40 s. Prf=0.6+0.6+0.7=1.9 MW. Disruption
was due to a big injection, but views of D and J show nothing.
Heating looks pretty good. Startup was terrible. H/D=5% (CX).

Next shot: suggestion from Steve W: lower RCUR derivative gain in
segment 1 between t=0.010-0.030 s from 6 to 3. Raise power on
D and J4. Leave E as is. Turn on argon.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.31 s. Prf=0.7+0.6+0.85=2.15 MW.
Killed by a big injection. There was another big injection at
t=0.95 s. Max Te0=4.0 keV. H/D=4.0% (CX). Still no H-modes.
Good startup.

Next shot: no PCS changes, no RF changes. DNB gate valve will open
on the next shot, but with no gas.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. H-mode!!! Prf=0.7+0.6+0.85=2.15 MW (same as
previous shot). Huge core and edge x-ray signals. Wth=125 kJ.
From the impurity accumulation, it looks ELMfree. Top and outboard
pedestals are narrow, but the fit on the outboard pedestal looks
strange. Raw edge x-ray data is good. Top pedestal position is
about 5 mm inside of separatrix, outboard is 10-12 mm inside.

Next shot: raise D and J4 by another 100 kW each. Increase argon
puff from 30 to 40 ms.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 09 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.40 s. No H-modes. Prf=2.35 MW, no faults
Why no H-mode? Same ne, Ip, Bt. H/D=6% (CX), same as preceding
shot.

Next shot: raise D and J4 power some more.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 10 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: tweak Br0 and pre-fill gas puff.

No ECDC after this shot.

Shot 11 -- Dud. No obvious reason why.

Next shot: tweak pre-fill gas puff.

No ECDC after this shot.

Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Multiple H-modes. Prf=2.6 MW. Same pedestal
positions as on shot 8, namely 4-5 mm inside for top array, and
10-11 mm for outboard array. H/D=7% (CX).

Next shot: decrease outer gap by 4 mm so the outer array sees more
of the pedestal. RF may need some re-tuning. Turn on high
frequency sampling window on xtomo for t=1.00 to 1.15 s.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. One H-mode (ELMfree, I think). Prf=2.4-2.5 MW.
Outer array had better view of pedestal, but outer gap is still 13
mm. H/D=6-7% (Balmer). Same x-ray pedestal positions (top: 3-5 mm,
outboard: 10-12 mm).

Next shot: decrease outer gap another 2 mm (increase RCUR by 1 mm).
Move HIREX chord 1.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. One H-mode. Prf=3.0 MW, then 2.5 MW. Might
be some Type-I ELMs from t=0.8-1.0 s. Outer gap=12 mm. H/D=4-6%.

Next shot: raise Ip to 1.0 MA. Move fast XTOMO window to
t=0.90-1.15 s.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 15 -- Dud. Inexplicable. I (and Earl) heard a funny sound in the power
room.

Next shot: try again for 1 MA. No changes.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. 1 MA, but no H-modes. Seems to be a lot of
outgassing during the RF pulse. Prf=2.9-3.0 MW from t=0.6-1.5 s.
H/D=7%. John Rice reports that the argon up/down asymmetry has
switched sign compared to normal field direction.

Next shot: repeat, trying to degas the antennas.

ECDC in D2 done after this shot.

Shot 17 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: pre-fill tweak.

Shot 18 -- Aborted (no-power shot cycle) because the INIT state hung up.

Long delay while Josh works on the computer problems.

Shot 19 -- Aborted (no-power shot cycle) due to EFC problem.

Shot 20 -- Fizzle.

End of run.

Subj: shot 8

Here's my interpretation of what happens on shot 8:
At .89 sec, for whatever reason, the plasma changes its shape
a bit and the pedestal (and the separatrix?) moves inward by about 2 mm,
which makes it leave the view of chords 3-7 of the outboard array.
Hence, the widths and locations of the outboard pedestal are suspect
after t=0.89 sec. The inward shift of about 2 mm is seen on the top array.

When the pedestal is well diagnosed, the difference between the
pedestal locations is 5-8 mm. Although the sign did not change, this
is less of an asymmetry than what we usually see in H-mode at high
edge q (11.5 mm or so) but it's within the scatter of the normal field
data.

I suggest
1. Change the equilibrium so we can see the pedestal - why is the separatrix
so far in?
2. We need several shots for each current to get an estimate of st. dev.
and reproducibility - I suppose John Rice needs that anyway
3. If possible, an H-mode at even lower current, say .7 MA, would be great
to help determine the scaling, but I'd go for the 1.0 and 1.2 MA shots first

argon. (He's logged in remotely but can't get the IDL X-windows interface to

Shot 9 may be a good shot to look at L-mode in reversed field.
The automatic pedestal fitting routine seems to have a little
bit of information in it, despite the fact that the shot remains
in L-mode.

Nov 15 2000 10:50:16:280AM1001115006Robert GranetzShot 06 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.40 s. Prf=0.6+0.6+0.7=1.9 MW. Disruption
was due to a big injection, but views of D and J show nothing.
Heating looks pretty good. Startup was terrible. H/D=5% (CX).

Next shot: suggestion from Steve W: lower RCUR derivative gain in
segment 1 between t=0.010-0.030 s from 6 to 3. Raise power on
D and J4. Leave E as is. Turn on argon.

Nov 15 2000 11:08:51:810AM1001115007Robert GranetzShot 07 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.31 s. Prf=0.7+0.6+0.85=2.15 MW.
Killed by a big injection. There was another big injection at
t=0.95 s. Max Te0=4.0 keV. H/D=4.0% (CX). Still no H-modes.
Good startup.

Next shot: no PCS changes, no RF changes. DNB gate valve will open
on the next shot, but with no gas.

Nov 15 2000 11:40:11:843AM1001115008Robert GranetzShot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. H-mode!!! Prf=0.7+0.6+0.85=2.15 MW (same as
previous shot). Huge core and edge x-ray signals. Wth=125 kJ.
From the impurity accumulation, it looks ELMfree. Top and outboard
pedestals are narrow, but the fit on the outboard pedestal looks
strange. Raw edge x-ray data is good. Top pedestal position is
about 5 mm inside of separatrix.

Next shot: raise D and J4 by another 100 kW each. Increase argon
puff from 30 to 40 ms.

Nov 15 2000 12:06:56:810PM1001115008Robert GranetzOutboard edge array may be missing some of the pedestal.
Nov 15 2000 11:55:39:013AM1001115009Robert GranetzShot 09 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.40 s. No H-modes. Prf=2.35 MW, no faults
Why no H-mode? Same ne, Ip, Bt. H/D=6% (CX), same as preceding
shot.

Next shot: raise D and J4 power some more.

Nov 15 2000 12:25:09:357PM1001115010Robert GranetzShot 10 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: tweak Br0 and pre-fill gas puff.
Nov 15 2000 12:40:42:000PM1001115011Robert GranetzShot 11 -- Dud. No obvious reason why.

Next shot: tweak pre-fill gas puff.

Nov 15 2000 01:12:46:670PM1001115012Robert GranetzShot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Multiple H-modes. Prf=2.6 MW. Same pedestal
positions as on shot 8, namely 4-5 mm inside for top array, and
10-11 mm for outboard array.

Next shot: decrease outer gap by 4 mm so the outer array sees more
of the pedestal. RF may need some re-tuning. Turn on high
frequency sampling window on xtomo for t=1.00 to 1.15 s.

Nov 15 2000 01:41:49:780PM1001115013Robert GranetzShot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. One H-mode (ELMfree, I think). Prf=2.4-2.5 MW.
Outer array had better view of pedestal, but outer gap is still 13
mm. H/D=6-7% (Balmer). Same x-ray pedestal positions (top: 3-5 mm,
outboard: 10-12 mm).

Next shot: decrease outer gap another 2 mm (increase RCUR by 1 mm).
Move HIREX chord 1.

Nov 15 2000 02:07:36:670PM1001115014Robert GranetzShot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. One H-mode. Prf=3.0 MW, then 2.5 MW. Might
be some Type-I ELMs from t=0.8-1.0 s. Outer gap=12 mm. H/D=4-6%.

Next shot: raise Ip to 1.0 MA. Move fast XTOMO window to
t=0.90-1.15 s.

Subj: for the logbook

Looks like there are several giant ELMs on shot 14, cutting the
x-ray emissivity way down on the innermost channels and spiking it up
on the outer channels all the way to channel 37 (most dramatic on array 4)

We should move the fast window to see them

Nov 15 2000 02:20:44:390PM1001115015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Dud. Inexplicable. I (and Earl) heard a funny sound in the power
room.

Next shot: try again for 1 MA. No changes.
Nov 15 2000 02:55:48:437PM1001115016Robert GranetzShot 16 -- Plasma.

Nov 15 2000 03:37:22:733PM1001115017Robert GranetzShot 18 -- Aborted (no-power shot cycle) because the INIT state hung up.
