MP236 Edge Pedestal Asymmetries with Reversed Field

Summary:

The first part of this MP, namely H-modes at Ip=0.8 MA, was accomplished
last week, with the result that the difference in top/outboard x-ray
pedestal location did not change with direction of the grad-B drift. In
today's reversed field run, we wanted to check on another characteristic of
the top/outboard x-ray pedestal asymmetry, namely that the difference in
pedestal location is observed to decrease as q95 decreases in the normal
field direction. We started the day at Ip=1.2 MA, then lowered this to 1.1
MA halfway through the run. Although we had ICRF power up 2.9 MW (on shot
1001122012, we were plagued by disruptions due to large impurity
injections, and we did not get any H-modes, so we were not able to find out
if there is a q95 dependence on the x-ray pedestal locations.

Power system setup from shot 1001115016

Gas setup - fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled
fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED
fill B-side upper with 35 psi of D2 Hybrid DISABLED, for ECDC
fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled

ICRF: Power at the 3.5level required. Some shots will require ramps
for threshold data. Ramp from 2 or 2.5 up to 3 or 3.5 MW for example.

The following gate valves should be enabled: ECE, VUV, DNB, Beast

We will begin with PCS setup as in 1001115016, but at 1.2 MA Ip. Only two
good shots are required to finish mp236.

Summary:

Startup was very good today, but several full current disruptions
caused problems early in the run. The 2Pi diode indicated large
injections that could not be correlated with anything going on
on the viewable antennas, but was probably caused by RF heating some
other invessel surface. On shot 8 we turned off the RF and got a
full length shot for the first time. A fizzle on shot 9 was
probably the result of letting Bz drift too negative. Ef4 had a
10 amp ramp from 1325 to 1335 that was removed for shot 10, which
then ran. The disruptivity was improved somewhat during RF by
ramping ZXL up 0.5 to 1 cm to help spread out the heat load (shot 11).
An early MARFE on shot 11 when away on shot 12 (clean up?).

We switched to Amanda's h-mode threshold run on shot 16. We were
unable to get Bob's data w/o disruptions.

ECDC between shots seemed to keep H/D under control. We waited
until the vessel pressure was below 5e-6 Torr following ECDC,
which delayed a few shots today.

Problems:

Disruption on shot 13 pulled PF breakers. Found a bad fuse in
OH2L. Bus overvoltage trip (>1100 volts) on OH1 started the
sequence.

Injections both before the RF and during RF caused a great deal
of trouble during the mp236 attemps. The early injections were
not associated with crossover as we have seen in the past. Ian
noted that the inner divertor nose tiles were getting very
hot along their edges which probably explained some of the
injections (shot 5 for example). These were low density, high
energy discharges.

but it disrupts shortly after D joins in (at a total of 2.3 MW). E-port remains
off the entire time. Looks like something in the machine doesn't like hot
plasma. It's clearly not an antenna issue. The camera views don't show
any problems with D or J4.

I'll give it one more try before quitting and turning the run over to Amanda.

Next shot: try sweeping ZXL a little bit so that the strike doesn't stay
fixed on the divertor plates. (The strike points are currently in good positions,
but remain fixed for most of the shot.)
