Run Summary

This was a fairly successful run day from the standpoint of implementing
various elements of the run plan. We were able to eventually reproduce
the density barrier mode at 4.5T with off-axis ICRF heating only (80
MHz system). A sequence of shots was then taken where HIREX data was
obtained at different radial locations out to r/a of 0.5. Hopefully,
T_i and plasma rotation profiles can be deduced from this data. The rf
group was also able to get the 70 MHz ICRF system running with a power
ramp up to the 600-700 kW level on the last few shots of the
day. Finally, the H/D ratio stayed at 0.04-0.06 for the day.

Shots 001 - 010 were not optimal for HIREX measurements either because
the 80 MHz rf power had faults, or because we had trouble obtaining an
"early" sustained H-mode with consequent density peaking. On Shot 011
the plasma outer gap was reduced from 1.5 cm to 1.0 cm to improve
antenna coupling and the results were very positive.

On Shots 011 - 018 we got the density barrier mode plus HIREX data. A
typical best shot during this scan was 1001213016, where P_icrf = 2 MW,
W_mhd = 85 kJ, and ne0_TS = 3.0 X 2.0 = 6.0 X 10^20 at the end of the
density rise. The factor of 2.0 in the evaluation of the density is
the suggested fudge factor for the core Thomson scattering as posted
on the OPS bulletin board on December 15, 2000.

On shots 018-020 the 70 MHz J-port system was turned on at different
times at low power level (200-600 kW), in addition to the D & E port
power. The density increase during the barrier mode appeared to be
"arrested" by application of the J-port power in this mode. However,
this could be too low an rf power level for reaching any conclusions
concerning the effect of the on-axis, 70 MHz heating on the density
barrier mode.

On shots 021-022 we turned off D & E ports (80 MHz power) and turned
on J-port only in a ramp from 0.7 sec. to 1.4 sec. (up to 600 kW).
We got delayed H-modes in each case with no real density peaking.

Summary
-------

Machine ran much better today than yesterday, probably because
of the overnight ECDC. Only a couple of tweaks to Br and gas
were required at the beginning of the run. We had only one
fizzle. Impurity levels (CII, RGA) were very low. HtoD was
typically 5 to 7% by the end of the day. We made a very good
start at getting j-port running at 70 MHz (600kW level so far).
