| Run Summary for Friday - December 15, 2000 Mini-proposal No. 277A: Internal Transport Barrier Studies at 4.5T with Simultaneous Central and Off-axis ICRF Heating 1001215 Physics Operator: Ian Hutchinson Session Leader: Paul Bonoli ____________________________________________________________________________ Run Summary ____________________________________________________________________________ The density barrier mode produced with off-axis ICRF heating was recovered on the second shot of the day. Early transition (before 0.8 sec) to an EDA H-mode was again observed. It may be that a slightly higher target density helps, but it is not clear. The off-axis heating power was scanned on shots 002-004 and clear density peaking was seen with 1.5-2.0 MW of power. We spent time trying to heat the density barrier mode with the limited J-port power that was available (600 kW). In each case we still observed that the density rise would arrest itself upon application of the 70 MHz power above the 400 kW level (shots 005-010). We also attempted to increase the density peaking of the barrier mode by applying the 80 MHz power earlier in the discharge and at a higher power level (see shots 011-020). We were not able to increase the peaking in any obvious way during this shot sequence. A scan of current was also done on shots 021 - 023 to test the effect of q (safety factor) on the density barrier formation. At higher current (1 MA) it was difficult to produce a sustained EDA (without transitions) and at 600 kA a rapid density increase was observed which then saturated at 1.1 sec. The positive aspect of this run day was the recovery of a reproducible density barrier mode. Again, the limited J-port power made it difficult to test the confinement properties of the density barrier mode. |

| Physop Summary 1001215 MP 277a 70MHz heating of ITBs. Summary _______ Tokamak ran well. We got lots of peaking density profiles at 4.5T. D/E antennas worked well up to about 2.5MW. Very little activity observed on the cameras. J-port was limited to 0.5MW by arcing. There were a few shots where it appears to heat the center slightly. There is also evidence that it tends to reduce the peaking of density on axis. We also got shots at 0.6 and 1.0MA.
