Run Summary

This was a very successful run day in several respects. First we
learned that in order to reliably produce the density barrier mode
with off-axis ICRF heating only, it is important to have a high enough
target density, in this case nl_04 = 1.0 X 10^20. Using the higher
target density (see shots 013-024) produces a sustained EDA H-mode
phase with an early L->H transition at (0.7-0.8) sec., and void of any
back (H->L) transitions. The density increases were quite strong in
many of these plasmas with ne0 (from Thomson scattering) rising to
8 X 10^20. The density profiles as measured from visible bremsstrahlung
also exhibited clear peaking. The process through which we established
reliable density barrier mode formation was as follows: On shots
001-003 the off-axis ICRF heating power was brought up to 2 MW and a
density barrier was produced on shot 003 following an early transition
to a sustained EDA H-mode. However, shot 003 experienced a late
disruption after which early transition to a sustained EDA H-mode
could not be achieved (shots 004 - 006). After various attempts to
get back the sustained EDA phase, such as discharge cleaning between
shots, changing the timing of the J-port power, changing the level of
the 80 MHz off-axis heating power, and changing the triangularity, it
was decided on shots 012 and 013 to raise the target density (nl_04)
by about 40% to 1.0 X 10^20. This worked very well. The H/D ratio
remained at about 0.04 for the remainder of the run.

We were also able to heat with the 70 MHz J-port power during the
density barrier phase, at different rf power levels and at different
times. Increases in the neutron rate and central T_i were produced by
injecting J-port power later in the discharge (1.25 - 1.5 sec) after
the density barrier forms (see shots 016-019). We were able to scan
the on-axis 70 MHz power from 0.8 - 1.2 MW in these plasmas. The
increase in neutron rate was found to increase with increasing on-axis
heating power (as expected). The density increase during barrier
formation was found to be arrested by the injection of J-port power at
1.25 - 1.5 sec (see shots 016 and 019). Interstingly enough, on some
shots the density increase was also found to continue during J-port
heating (see shot 018 for example). Thus it seems that the on-axis
heating causes the density barrier to "leak" under certain plasma
conditions (but not every shot). A scan of the radial position of the
HIREX diagnostic was also carried out on shots 019-024 to get data for
T_i and plasma rotation profiles during on-axis heating of the density
barrier mode. The J-port power was also injected from 1.25 - 1.5 sec
during the HIREX position scan.The data obtained during this day of
running should be adequate to carry out a careful transport analysis,
in order to determine if heating inside a thermal energy barrier was
occurring in these plasmas.

A good example of on-axis heating by J-port in a sustained EDA H-mode
with no density barrier can be found in shot 015. In this plasma, 0.8
MW of J-port power was overlapped with the 80 MHz power from 0.7 - 1.5
sec. Clear indications of central heating can be seen in the electron
temperature increase on the central GPC channel (which was not cut-off
in this case). The neutron rate also increases during this phase.

During shots 016-025 the total injected ICRF power was in the range
2.8 - 3.2 MW. The J-port antenna system ran very well all day, coupling
0.8 - 1.2 MW into plasma reliably. The 80 MHz, D and E antenna systems
also worked well coupling 2 MW total into plasma.

Summary
-------

Machine ran extremely well today with 100% startup. RF was beautiful
also. Following shot 3, we had some difficulty getting the machine
back into a continuous eda mode. After several shots with
veriations in ECDC between shots, small changes to triangularity,
and a small tweak to the density, we increased the density from
0.7 to 1e20 NL04 on shot 14 and got a good EDA mode with barrier
formation.

I think we made good progress on mp277a today.

Problems
--------

On shot 14 we had the noise problem again in one of the TF
converters. Causes 1 kA noise level on TF bus current.

I used a startup shot from before Ian fixed various offsets.
Should load from a shot from last Friday to get the
offsets.

Big injection on shot 22 caused disruption and OH crowbar. No
fuses lost.

There is some evidence of density peaking later in the discharge
around 1.3 sec where ne0_TS increases to 6.0 X 10^20. Interestingly,
this is also where J-port power turns on.
D had two trips but E and J ran nicely.
Take this shot over again with 5 min. of ECDC and increased triangularity.
Also increase J-port power to 1 MW.

Result: Got an EDA H-mode phase until disruption occurred at 1.43 sec.
ne0_TS = 7.3 X 10^20. This shot was strange because there was
no real signature of any J-port heating. The neutron rate
hardly changed. A nice density barrier did form however.
Take final shot with J-port turned on from 1.0 - 1.5 sec. at 1 MW
and (D,E) powers reduced to 1.5 MW total.
