| Physics operator summary for run 1010515 (Tuesday): MP # ?? Power tests, DNB tests MP #259 MSE calibration Session leader: J. Irby, W. Rowan Physics operator: R. Granetz Engineer: G. Dekow/B. Cochran Summary: This was the first day of tokamak operation after a 4.5 month shutdown. Not surprisingly, there were a host of minor, but annoying problems with various faults, the TF scanner, etcetera. Gary Dekow, Bill Cochran, and Dave Terry managed to solve all the problems during the day, and with an extra half-hour of running, we even managed to get a plasma (albeit short and dirty) on our first attempt. Ned Eisner ran the DNB between shots initially, but by the latter part of the day, he got it firing into the machine during the shot cycle, with a beam voltage of up to 41 kV and a current of 3.1 amps. Several new beam diagnostics were brought online. Matt Sampsell got H-alpha, H-beta, and H-gamma spectra of the beam, so we can figure out the energy component mix, and also get information on quantum excitation in the beam. Because of all the shakedown problems, we didn't get to the MSE calibration today, but Howard Yuh was able to see some signal above the background even at these reduced parameters and low fill pressures. Hopefully we'll get to do the MSE calibration tomorrow. From the one plasma shot, it is very clear that we need to do a lot of plasma discharge cleaning. Scorecard: 1 plasmas 0 fizzles 0 duds 33 tests 0 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 34 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup: ECDC in D2 overnight. Gas setup: fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) fill B-side upper with nothing Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill C-side with 30 psi of H2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG3) fill J-bottom with nothing Hybrid DISABLED (PG5) Enable the following gate valves: none. (DNB will be enabled at some point.) Run starts at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: No RF power is required today. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan: Cycle tests, individual power supply tests, possible EF2 60 Hz test, and TF tests. During these tests, we will try to operate the DNB into the torus, with a pre-fill of D2, to check out the beam itself, several new beam duct monitors (H-alpha diodes, pressure gauges), and associated DNB spectroscopic diagnostics. We would like to look at the shifted H-alpha components to get the energy components, as well as H-beta and H-gamma to get some information on excited states. Once the power supply tests are completed, we will start on the MSE calibration, which involves firing the DNB into a TF-only field and measuring the MSE angle. If time permits, try TF + varying amounts of EF4 to vary the field angle a known amount. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overnight ECDC in D2 Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Test of shot cycle. OK. There will be a delay here to manually charge and test the cap banks. Shot 02 -- Test; no power. Bus Rogowski data came through. Shot 03 -- Test of commutation cap banks. No power. Shot 04 -- Test, no power. Shot 05 -- Test, no power. Shot 06 -- Test, no power. Shot 07 -- Test, no power. Shot 08 -- Test, no power. Shot 09 -- Test, no power. Shot 10 -- Test, no power. Shot 11 -- Test, no power. Done with capacitor bank testing. There will be a delay before Shot 12 to fix a problem with OH2L. Shot 12 -- Test, TF only, 50 kA, PLC. 20 ms pre-fill puff of D2 is enabled. Good. Magnetics looks good. Got gas puff. Next shot: enable DNB gate valve. Turn on EDGE tree in order to get F-side ratiomatic pressure. Shot 13 -- Test, TF only, 100 kA, PLC. Looks good. Bus signals weren't recorded because of the MDS/DAQ timing, but magnetics confirms that Btor=3.4 T. DNB gate valve opened. DNB ionization gauge measures 5e-6 torr. F-side ratiomatic reads 6e-5 torr. Next shot: 150 kA TF test. Turn on SPECTROSCOPY tree. Shot 14 -- Test. No power cycle due to a problem with a thermocouple reading. Next shot: 150 kA TF test. Turn on SPECTROSCOPY tree. Problem with TF scanner. Cancel TF test. Shot 15 -- Test, EF3, 2 kA, PLC. Looks good. All flux loops and necessary Bp coils look good. DNB gas pufffed. It doubles the pressure to 0.15 mTorr. Next shot: EF2U Shot 16 -- Test, EF2U, 2 kA, PLC. Looks good. DNB gas puffed, got arc current, but no HV. Next shot: EF2L Shot 17 -- Test, EF2L, 2 kA, PLC. Large 60 Hz component on EF2L output. DNB had gas and arc, but still no HV. Next shot: EFC test Shot 18 -- Test, EFC. OK. DNB still can't get the HV to fire. It's not due to a spurious alarm on the dump magnet. Next shot: TF only at 150 kA Shot 19 -- Test, TF, 150 kA, PLC. OK. DNB gas and arc fired, no HV. Next shot: EF1U Shot 20 -- Test, EF1U, -2 kA, PLC. OK. Problem with engineering CAMAC? Next shot: EF1U, opposite polarity. Shot 21 -- Test, EF1U, +2 kA, PLC. OK. Dave Terry figured out the problem with the DNB HV...it's the fizzle detector!! For the next shot, move the DNB pulse earlier (start at t=0.2 instead of 0.5 s), and move the fizzle detector to 0.38 s, and delay start of power supplies by 0.3 s as well (since fizzle detector is being used to turn off the supplies). Next shot: EF1L Shot 22 -- Test, EF1L, -2 kA, PLC. There was current, but it was not in regulation due to a wrong setting on the switch time. DNB HV supply fired, but the arc didn't, for some unknown reason. Next shot: repeat with proper switch time Shot 23 -- Test, EF1L, +2 kA, PLC. OK. DNB fired, 31 kV, about 2 amps! Next shot: OH1 Shot 24 -- Test, OH1, -10 kA, PLC. OK. Coax resistance = 0.12 uohms. Next shot: OH1, opposite polarity Shot 25 -- Test, OH1, +10 kA, PLC. OK. Beam fired again, ~31 kV, 1.9 amps. Next shot: OH2U Shot 26 -- Test, OH2U, -10 kA, PLC. OK. Beam fired again, same parameters. Next shot: OH2U, opposite polarity Shot 27 -- Test, OH2U, +10 kA, PLC. OK. Beam fired again, 36 kV, 1.9 amps. Next shot: OH2L Shot 28 -- Test, OH2L, -10 kA, PLC. OK. Coax resistance = 0.14 uohms. Beam fired, 36 kV, 2.4 amps. Pressure=0.10-0.15 mTorr. Howard sees unmistakeable signals above the noise level, even at these parameters!! Next shot: OH2L, opposite polarity Shot 29 -- Test, OH2L, +10 kA, PLC. OK. No beam. Next shot: EF4 Shot 30 -- Test, EF4s, -1 kA each, PLC. OK. Beam on. Matt Sampsell has been getting H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma spectra, so we'll have some info on energy components and excitation. Next shot: EF4, opposite polarity. Shot 31 -- Test, EF4s, +1 kA each, PLC. OK. Beam on, 41 kV, 3.1 amps. Next shot: commutation test of the OH's. Move DNB to t=0.7 s (from t=0.2 s, in order to leave prefill pressure unaffected at t=0, for possible plasma shot later today and/or tomorrow). Shot 32 -- Test, commutation of OH1, OH2U, OH2L. OK. Beam is disabled by the fizzle detector (as planned), which is now set at the normal time. Next shot: EF1 commutations Shot 33 -- Test, commutation of EF1U, EF1L. OK. Next shot: try for plasma. Enable ECE gate valve (along with DNB). Turn on all trees except RF. Enable C-side valve (along with B-top) Turn control over to HYBRID computer. Shot 34 -- Plasma! Lasted until t=0.17 s. Plasma current got up to 0.48 MA before it starting rolling over due to high resistivity. The fizzle detector prevented the DNB from turning on. Some spectroscopy and edge data were lost. The main H-alpha signal and the TCI signals were zero. GPC says 13 keV. End of run. |
