Session Leader Summary for part 1 of 1010530

SL: wolfe,boivin
PO: Granetz
EO: Cochran,Parkin

Run Plan:

Plasma conditioning, DNB conditioning
MP 214: D & E antenna conditioning
MP 287: ASDEX non-dimensional comparison (possible piggyback)

Start from most recent shot (1010525021), except re-program Ip to be flat.
The density will be raised during the morning to try and reduce the H/D
ratio, in preparation for next week's boronization. Helium will be
puffed for DNB/CXRS. RF will start off with D and E antennas, with the
possibility of also turning on J. If we get around to MP 287, Amanda will
specify the desired shapes, which mostly involve reducing the triangularity.

Things got off to an exciting start when the Oh2 supplies went berserk on shot#1.
The problem was traced to the DC supply for the magnetics integrators, which
had fried itself, causing unintegrated signals to go to the hybrid feedback
inputs. The supply was replaced, and we ran a PLC test shot to confirm things
were working. Shot #3-6 were duds, although the fields looked good; we made a
minor tweak to EF4 and raised the pre-puff on each of these, to no avail.
Finally, Bob tried lowering the pre-puff on shot#7, and that resulted in a
full length plasma, with a bouncing startup. H/D was not bad, at 0.35; the
ECDC and bake since the last run may have helped.

The oh2L coax resistance went over 2uOhm again after the unpleasantness on
shot 1, but recovered after a few shots. That's the good news.

We then raised the density to 1.0e20, so the valve would stay on. This worked,
but at 1.1-1.2sec the density again had an uncontrolled rise. Brian confirmed
that this was a detachment.

We also began developing a low-triangularity shape for the ASDEX
simulation, but this was not completed.

The run was plagued by continued unexplained duds (#10, 11, 12, 14, 15). After
shot 12 we ran ECDC and did not do RF conditioning of J-antenna, and the
following shot ran. After 15 we again ran ECDC, with no RF conditioning, and
again got a plasma on 16.

However, after shot 16, Chris observed a piece of shim stock lying in the
divertor between B and C ports. This has been tentatively identified as the VB
viewing dump. The run was stopped and cooling turned off in preparation for an
up-to-helium tomorrow to remove it.

All in all, NOT a good day!

Physics operator summary for run 1010530 (Wednesday):

Plasma conditioning, DNB conditioning
MP 214: D & E antenna conditioning
MP 287: ASDEX non-dimensional comparison (possible piggyback)

Session leader: Wolfe/Wukitch/Hubbard
Physics operator: R. Granetz
Engineer: G. Dekow/B. Cochran

Summary: Lots of problems today. On shot 1 we found that the magnetics
system was not working. This was traced to a failed power supply
to the integrator circuits. (More info in logbook under MHD.) It
took until noontime to replace the supply and confirm that
everything was working properly. Throughout the rest of the day,
we were plagued by inexplicable duds. The RF and the DNB were
firing between shots, and we suspect (for no justifiable reason
other than statistics) that conditioning J-port between shots
somehow causes duds. Two times we did ECDC between shots, instead
of RF conditioning, and both of the following shots had plasma.
The H/D ratio was varying between 0.3 and 0.6 today. In the
afternoon, we started matching triangularities to ASDEX, for MP
287, and we could probably do even better with a few more shots.
The run ended prematurely when Chris Boswell observed a sheet (of
metal?) standing in the divertor after shot 16.

Scorecard: 5 plasmas
0 fizzles
9 duds

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overnight ECDC in D2 was done.

Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shot 01 -- Dud. OH2's went beserk because the magnetics didn't work correctly.
The +/-15 volt supply for the integrators (and the +5 volt TTL
invertors for the TR16's) is blown. The wiring harness to one of
the integrator circuit racks is burned up. We don't think the
circuits themselves have any problems.

There will be a delay of several hours while a new power supply and wiring is
prepared and reinstalled. Then we will run some magnetics tests and a
"Tuesday morning" test of the OH's to confirm that they're okay and that the
magnetics system is working properly.

Shot 02 -- Test; OH1, OH2's under PLC control. Looks good. Magnetics system
is working properly.

Next shot: go for plasma

Shot 03 -- Dud. All power supplies look good. Fields and pressure look good.

Next shot: add +10 amps to IC_EF4 and 3 ms to pre-fill puff

Shot 04 -- Test, no power; (because the EF breaker faulted during INIT)

Next shot: try for plasma again.

Shot 05 -- Dud. Fields and pressure looks good.

Next shot: increase pre-fill puff another 5 ms, on Steve Wolfe's
request.

Shot 06 -- Dud. Fields look good. Fill pressure is on the high side.

Next shot: try going the other way in pre-fill pressure. Set it
at 18 ms. (It was at 30 ms for this last shot.)

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Full length shot; ramped all the way down. Ip=0.8 MA,
nice flattop. nl_04=0.7e20 m-2. Prf=0.5 MW from each of D and E.
Some hints of heating. H/D=0.35.

Next shot: raise nl_04 to 1.0e20 m-2.

Shot 08 -- Plasma. Disrupted in rampdown. Prf=1.0 MW from D+E. Density was
at nl_04=1.0e20 m-2 for most of the shot, but then rose a little
late in the shot. H/D ramps from 0.3 to 0.6 during the shot.

Next shot: increase argon puff from 25 to 35 ms.

Note: RF and DNB have been firing between shots since the beginning of the run.

Shot 09 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.49 s. Looks like it was getting a little
resistive, or maybe a little injection.

Next shot: slow down the density ramp a bit.

Shot 10 -- Dud. Fields look good. Pre-fill has gone up a bit.

Next shot: decrease pre-fill another 2 ms. Also decrease upper
and lower triangularities by moving RXL and RXU out by 1.0 and 1.5
cm respectively. Amanda wants us to shoot for DOUTU=0.316 and
DOUTL=0.431

Shot 11 -- Dud.

Next shot: put the pre-fill puff back to 18 ms

Shot 12 -- Dud. Everything looks fine.

Start ECDC in D2 between shots.

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 13 -- Plasma. Disrupted during rampdown. No DNB. Prf=0.5 MW from E.
DOUTU=0.31-0.32, DOUTL=0.43-0.44, Kappa=1.62.

Next shot: add 3 mm to RXL, add ramp to RXU after t=1.0 s to try
and keep upper triangularity constant. No between-shot ECDC this
time, so RF can continue conditioning.

Shot 14 -- Dud.

Next shot: no changes. No between-shot ECDC.

Shot 15 -- Dud. We're beginning to think that between-shot conditioning of
the J-port antenna is somehow causing these duds.

ECDC between shots. No RF conditioning between shots.

Next shot: reduce ZXU by about 1.5 cm to try and increase the
elongation for a better match to the ASDEX shape.

Shot 16 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=1.12 s. I think there was an injection at
t=1.06 s. Prf=1 MW from D+E. Elongation didn't increase much, but
upper triangularity did.

** Chris Boswell has video images showing a sheet of something sitting in the
divertor between B and C ports. **

End of run.

Tomorrow we'll have to backfill the machine with helium, open up the gate
valve at C-port, reach in and extract the object.

May 30 2001 10:20:16:327AM1010530001Steve Wolfeshot#1: Plasma attempt.
Dud. Oh2 supplies went berserk.
Hybrid Br and ZCUR feedback thrashing rail-to-rail
Magnetics problem. The DC supply to the integrator crates is dead.
Note that this supply also runs the inverter that supplies triggers to
the TR16's, so they didn't go.

Delay until a new DC supply is wired up and installed.
Then we'll proceed carefully to make sure nothing else is gronked.

signals look ok, oh2L resistance is back to 2.5uOhm.

Next shot: try for plasma

another dud. Bob wants to lower the fill.
I think we may be getting poisoned by RF and/or DNB going between shots.
Earl remembers when this happened last year; he also remembers getting
plasma back by lowering the fill, so we'll see.
May 30 2001 01:08:11:070PM1010530007Steve Wolfeshot#7: Prepuff to 18msec
plasma full length!
RF from D&E at 0.5MW each. H/D ~.35

another dud. Raise the fill.
May 30 2001 02:38:53:610PM1010530012Steve Wolfeshot#12: Raise the fill back to where it was on shot 9 (and 10).
Still trying fo rlower triangularity, slower density rise.
And another dud.

Go to ECDC before the next shot.
May 30 2001 03:11:47:010PM1010530013Steve Wolfeshot#13: Try ten minutes of between-shot ECDC, no RF conditioning pulses this time.

I think it's the RF conditioning, but they need to
do it.

NO ECDC this time.

dud

Back to ECDC between shots, RF will stop pulsing between shots.
See if this works.
May 30 2001 04:30:05:517PM1010530016Steve Wolfeshot#16: add 3mm to rxl, and increase rxu after 1 sec (relative to 13)
zxu to +.03, to try to match ASDEX shape better.

plasma, disrupts at 1.1sec.
RF at 1MW. du=.37, dl=.43, kappa=1.63, ssep=-1.2cm
There is a piece of metal, like shim stock, in the divertor between
B and C port. It could be a viewing dump from the Z-meter.
It seems to be there from the beginning of shot 16, but was
not visible during shot 13.
