| PhysOp Summary for Monday, June 4, 2001 Plasma Conditioning MP215 Jport RF Conditioning MP287 ASDEX UG non-dim comparison (Shape Development only) SL: Irby, Boivin PO: wolfe EO: Cochran,Parkin Engineering setup: ----------------- ECDC in D2 over the weekend (as much as possible) and overnight prior to run. Run starts at 10:00AM Be prepared for ECDC in D2 between shots (using B-top valve). Power systems as on 1010601011 Gas setup: fill B-top with 6 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi of Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 6 psi of He Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) ** fill C-side with 30 psi of D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) fill J-bottom with 6 psi of He Hybrid DISABLED (PG5) ** ** If W. Burke thinks J-bottom has been fixed, we should test it before the first plasma shot, and if it's working, we may use B-side Upper for between shot ECDC in D2 instead of B-top. Enable the following gate valves: ECE, DNB. Do NOT enable VUV ! Run plan: --------- The run will be continuation of plasma conditioning (SL=IRBY) and, if the plasmas are up to it, begin J-port conditioning, MP215 (SL=Boivin). If it can be accommodated without problems to the other activities, it would be good to finish the shape development for MP287, ASDEX comparison, that we began on 1010530. Begin with 1010601012, and try to get back to where we were last Wednesday. If that works, proceed from there. Results: -------- Better than Friday! We started off with ~1sec plasmas, and worked up to several that made it into rampdown. The early shots had some runaways, but these pretty much went away with slightly higher pre-fill. RF quickly got D&E back to the 0.8MW level (together) with a fair bit of gas coming off the antennas. The density program stayed at 5e19, and the wall and antenna fueling kept the puff mostly off. H/D was typically rising to 1 more or less continuously through the shot. On shot 13 we resumed the ASDEX shape development, with a reload of (seg 2) from 1010530013. Shot 15 is a reasonably good match to the ASDEX shape that we were aiming for. Shot 16 has a 1cm larger inner gap and is probably an even better match; Amanda needs to confirm that. Startup was very robust. The only fizzle was shot#3, when I tried raising the pre-puff. We ran ten minutes of between-shot ECDC after every shot from #3 on. The cable to the J-bottom valve was found to be bad (4 ohm). This was replaced and the valve exercised with a power supply; it apparently worked. However, puffing during the plasma (6psi He, and later 16psi He) had no clear effect. This should be checked in a gas-only test before we need to use it. TCI feedback failed on one shot (#5) resulting in a disruption at 0.47sec, and some power supply fault indications. No damage done, and the next shot ran fine (or as fine as any of the others at this stage). Jim said that one of the HeNe signals had gotten noisy. Summary: -------- Tests 0 Duds 0 Fizzles 1 Plasmas 15 ======== == Shots 16 |

| Jun 4 2001 08:26:04:417AM | Steve Wolfe | Load shot from 1010601012: 600kA, 5e19. We'll try to get this going before raising current and density. Jim ran the bake up to 100 on Saturday. ECDC ran all weekend except for 10 hours on Saturday, during the power outage. | |
| Jun 4 2001 10:24:33:723AM | 1010604001 | Steve Wolfe | shot#1: plasma attempt, loaded from 1010601012 plasma, some hards, to 1.2sec. density starts to rise at .6sec, after crossover; detachment? H/D to 0.8 next shot: raise current to 800kA |
| Jun 4 2001 11:01:01:090AM | 1010604002 | Steve Wolfe | shot#2: raise current to 800kA; enable j-bot with 100ms He @0.4sec plasma to 1.07 sec, still runaways. This one bounced a little harder j-bot is pulsing on zero demand, and up full between .4 and .5; try a negative bias and only go to 80V next time. RF got to 0.3MW each on D&E, faulting on J H/D over 1 and climbing next shot: increase pre-puff to 28msec |
| Jun 4 2001 11:13:07:127AM | 1010604003 | Steve Wolfe | shot#3: increase pre-puff to 28msec j-bot: try a negative bias and only go to 80V next time. fizzle. too much early gas. next shot: 10 minutes ECDC, gas back to 26msec |
| Jun 4 2001 11:45:20:653AM | 1010604004 | Steve Wolfe | shot#4: 10 minutes ECDC, gas back to 26msec j-bot: try a negative bias and only go to 80V next time. plasma, to 0.95sec; no hards this time. bd a little late? H/D down to 0.6 next shot: repeat, move J-puff to .7sec |
| Jun 4 2001 12:06:20:470PM | 1010604005 | Steve Wolfe | shot#5: repeat, move J-puff to .7sec plasma only to 0.47sec Lost tci, feedback turned on full. next shot: repeat, hopefully with TCI working |
| Jun 4 2001 12:39:35:317PM | 1010604006 | Steve Wolfe | shot#6: repeat, move J-puff to .7sec plasma, 1.2sec; looks like a marfe before 230msec. still can't see a response from j-bot valve. E at 400kW, D faulted, J retrying, puts a little signal on the bolo next shot: raise J-bot plenum pressure to 20psi. |
| Jun 4 2001 01:08:52:800PM | 1010604007 | Steve Wolfe | shot#7: tried to raise J-bot plenum pressure to 20psi, but couldn't. disable J-bot and go ahead. plasma to 1.07sec. RF to 0.8MW (D&E) H/D at 0.5, riseing to .9 during RF next shot: repeat with J-bot at 16.7psi (regulator is set at 17#) |
| Jun 4 2001 01:36:31:530PM | 1010604008 | Steve Wolfe | shot#8: repeat with J-bot at 16.7psi (regulator is set at 17#) Brian will exercise scanning probes plasma to 1sec, Jantenna still trying, D&E at 80kW looks like a response on the ratiomatic at 0.7 sec; H/D ~ 0.8 next shot: move jbot puff to 0.6 sec |
| Jun 4 2001 02:11:40:317PM | 1010604009 | Steve Wolfe | shot#9: move jbot puff to 0.6 sec plasma to .7sec. injection at 0.67sec. No sparks on J-port video, but it was trying to come on. next shot: repeat |
| Jun 4 2001 02:25:39:683PM | 1010604010 | Steve Wolfe | shot#10: repeat plasma to 1.3sec. Looks like ratiomatic is responding to J-bot valve, but no sign on the density next shot: disable J-bot piezo |
| Jun 4 2001 02:53:42:790PM | 1010604011 | Steve Wolfe | shot#11: disable J-bot piezo; otherwise, repeat. plasma to 1.67sec, into rampdown. Ratiomatic signal still shows a rise at 0.63, with no J-bottom enabled. J-antenna is trying, but not succeeding; D&E up to 0.82MW, over .5sec EFIT bombed at the disruption, re-run it with one fewer timeslice H/D rising to 1 continuously through shot. next shot: repeat |
| Jun 4 2001 03:13:09:303PM | 1010604012 | Steve Wolfe | shot#12: repeat plasma to 1.67sec next shot: load seg 2 from 1010530013 and reduce the density demand |

| Jun 4 2001 04:34:49:430PM | 1010604015 | Steve Wolfe | shot#15: rxu to +0.01, zxu to .02 plasma to 1.69sec; du=.27,dl=.44,k=1.65 Looks pretty good, maybe a little more clearin next shot: clearing from +.005 -> .015, rcur from .661->.666 |
| Jun 4 2001 04:55:14:990PM | 1010604016 | Steve Wolfe | shot#16: clearin from +.005 -> .015, rcur from .661->.666 (this one may go vertically unstable) plasma to 1.7sec; du=.28, dl=.45, k=1.68, n/nc=1.1 but no vertical problem. left gap is 2.6cm. Amanda had to leave, but I suspect this is even a better match than 15. That's all folks. |
