MP 215 : J antenna conditioning

The first shot will be an OH test under PLC control to confirm that the
magnetics system is working properly after yesterday's maintenance.

For plasma operation, load 1010606016 (1 MA, 5.4 T). Between-shot ECDC
will probably be used to reduce the H/D ratio further. Helium will be
puffed for DNB/CXRS. We may also try to do some more shaping changes for
the ASDEX comparison MP. This will primarily involve increasing CLEARIN
(keeping outer gap constant), and RXL (keeping strike point below the nose).

1. Increase J-port pulse duration and power

2. Verify calibration factors for J4.

Summary

The maximum injected power from J-port was ~1.7 MW for ~50 msec and
was limited by antenna conditioning time, ie the tuning was the pacing
item. The maximum power from all the antennas was ~4 MW but these
were ~1 msec. The maximum sustained power from all antennas was 3.7
MW, see shot 012. The difficulties today were numerous. FMIT#1 has a
power supply phase balance fault early in the day. D-port also
appeared to have numerous phase balance faults from the strap nearest
E-port and had to be started before E-port or it would not run.
FMIT#3 had HV ready failures during at least 2 discharges (control
ladder problem). FMIT#4 had a tube arc that fried the screen rollback
circuit resulting a missed shot lat in the day. FMIT#4 also proved to
be the most difficult to match. The proper match was extremely
difficult to find because too low (<200 kW) of a power resulted in
what appears to be multipactoring and too high simply faulted for the
entire discharge. However, 018 was very encouraging because we were
able to verify the calibration factors for J4.

Results:

The machine ran well. The DNB was down with a power supply problem. The RF made
good progress today, including a few shots with all 4 transmitters running
simultaneously into plasma (e.g. shot 12).

Efforts were made to add as much D_2 as possible, without increasing the
density, by puffing through the middle of the shot (20 V preprogram on PG3,
with feedback turned off, and then 100 V during rampdown). ECDC was also run in
deuterium before every shot. H/D levels fell slowly through the day; they still
rise during RF, but only up to about 0.4 by the end of the run.

The last shot of the day was lost to a data system problem, probably caused by
a CAMAC highway problem.

DNB has a fault of unknown origin which prevents operation for the moment.

(now 26 msec);
plasma; hards are gone; possible H-mode transition at 1.3 seconds; much
nicer startup.

Shot 04 -- Discharge clean 10 minutes before shot 4; add a bit of voltage to
PG3 preprog in seg 2 (20 v); nl_04 still set to 0.8e20
plasma; H/D 0.16 to 0.53; small neutron rate increase during J-port
(400 kW).

Shot 05 -- Discharge clean 10 minutes before shot 5; add a D_2 puff after 1.5
seconds;
plasma; H/D 0.16 to 0.5, then back down to 0.35 after 1.5 seconds.

Shot 06 -- Discharge clean 10 minutes before shot 6; no PCS changes
plasma; H/D 0.16 to 0.45, then down to 0.31 after 1.5 seconds; J-port
to 0.8 MW; definite heating (neutron rate).

Shot 07 -- Discharge clean 21 minutes before shot 7; turn off nl04 feedback at
0.9 seconds; PG3 to 20 Volt from 0.9 to 1.5, then up to 95 V;
plasma; H/D 0.16 to 0.40, then down to 0.25.

Shot 08 -- Discharge clean 10 minutes before shot 8; PG3 to 120 V after 1.5 s;

Results:

The machine ran well. The only startup changes made were to the fill pressure,
which was increased after the first shot (hard x-rays) and then decreased after
disruptions. The only other physop changes were to the gas puffing during the
plasmas. There were no shape changes made during the run.

The DNB was down with a power supply problem.

The RF made good progress today, including a few shots with all 4 transmitters
running simultaneously into plasma (e.g. shot 12).

Efforts were made to add as much D_2 as possible, without increasing the
density, by puffing through the middle of the shot (20 V preprogram on PG3,
with feedback turned off, and then 100 V during rampdown). ECDC was also run in
deuterium before every shot. H/D levels fell slowly through the day; they still
rise during RF, but only up to about 0.4 by the end of the run.

Run Plan:

MP 215 : J antenna conditioning

The first shot will be an OH test under PLC control to confirm that the
magnetics system is working properly after yesterday's maintenance.

For plasma operation, load 1010606016 (1 MA, 5.4 T). Between-shot ECDC
will probably be used to reduce the H/D ratio further. Helium will be
puffed for DNB/CXRS. We may also try to do some more shaping changes for
the ASDEX comparison MP. This will primarily involve increasing CLEARIN
(keeping outer gap constant), and RXL (keeping strike point below the nose).
