Miniproposal 281 Edge Turbulence Imaging

The first half of the 7/20/01 run was for edge turbulence imaging
measurements using the Princeton Scientific Instruments Ultra-Fast
Camera (PSI-3), which can take 12 successive frames up to 1
million frames/sec. Discharge conditions were set to match the
baseline case for which edge profiles are available and theoretical
simulations are being done by Hallatschek and Rogers.

Very nice image data were obtained on 9 shots today, including:

Shots 2,4,7 - normal case with D gas puff at 10 psi, good images
Shots 5,6 - same as above but with 20 psi, makes brighter images
Shots 8 - increased outer gap, see emission region move in, 10 psi
Shots 9 - same as 8 but increased to 20 psi, makes brighter images
Shot 10 - same as 8, but switch to He puff at 20 psi with HeII filter
(468.6 nm), see emission farther in, but dim, with waves
apparently propagating in opposite direction as before
Shot 11 - same as 10 but 30 psi, perhaps see directions of poloidal
propagation reverse vs. radius (shear layer ?)

Physics Operator Summary for Friday, July 20, 2001

MP281 Edge Turbulence Imaging: SL=Zweben (4-8 shots)
MP215 Jport SL=Wukitch, Piggyback on Zweben shots, then continue if warranted.
MP259 MSE calibration: SL=Yuh/Rowan (beam into gas with Bt, EF4) 10 "shots"

PO: wolfe
EO: Fitzgerald,Cochran,Parkin

Started from 1010622006,(1MA,5.4T,.85e20/m2) with density feedback switched to
NL_04 and a chopper program voltage of 100V in seg1 and 2 (see Ian's report
from 1010719). Otherwise seg1 is from 1010719022. The plan is to get
turbulence measurements with the PCI ultra-fast camera. After a series of
shots with constant conditions, we will increase the outer gap to extend the
camera viewing volume further into the SOL.

Overnight, the RF group identified a loose connection on DC2 as a likely cause
for the low signal levels on that probe. This morning they connected the
current probes to use for phase balance protection instead of the voltage
probes, which are located near a voltage minimum rather that at a maximum for
70MHz; it is hoped that these changes will improve the J-port performance.

Shot#1 disrupted early because the chopper was not enabled. Aside from that,
everything ran well.

The imaging run worked well. Shots#2-11 were good shots. Stewart ended up
getting data with both D2 and He puffs, with Dalpha and He+ filters. For the
last several shots (d and he) we moved the LCFS in by 1cm and got a view
further into the SOL. The helium data showed rotation in the opposite
direction further inside, with smaller features. Images were taken at 0.7sec.

Jport got up to 1MW, with minor faulting. RF started at 1sec.

Bruce and Brian tried the flappers and modulated the density. This caused some
difficulties for the RF tuning so they turned them back off for #10-11.

The MP259 MSE calibration, beam-into-gas with fields experiment started with
shot #12. Supplies and gas were run under hybrid control, seg 1 only, with the
fizzle detector set at .35sec. TF and EF4 were run for these shots.
Three shots (#24-26) were run with EF3 as well, to increase the Bz to ~.7T.
These were also done with hybrid control, using wire 8 for an ic_ef3 wire.
The final two shots (#27-28) were beam into gas and nothing into gas
for DNB system.

Physics Operator Comments
Jul 19 2001 05:45:56:173PMSteve WolfePreparing first shot for Friday-
Use seg1 from 1010719022
note: Br0=.002, IC_EF4=-1300, pg4=18msec
change chopper voltage from 150 to 100V
Use seg2 from 1010622006,
change to nl_04 feedback =8.5e19
copy chopper voltage from seg1
Save as pcs$wolfe 1010720000

Note: Ian's change in chopper idle voltage from 0 to 150V to lower
the average current from ~2000a seems to be a good thing. I'm dropping this to
100V to get a little more current, aiming for 1400-1500a, which should
increase the dynamic range a bit, since the supply can exceed 2500 at
the top of a chop, but can't go negative. Note that if both segments do
not agree on this voltage there can be a jump at segment switch, which
probably wouldn't hurt too much but ...

and Engineering Setup for Friday, July 20

MP281 Edge Turbulence Imaging: SL=Zweben (4-8 shots)

MP259 MSE calibration: SL=Yuh/Rowan (beam into gas with Bt, EF4) 10 "shots"

ECDC in D2 overnight, stopping by 8:00 am.
Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00 or sooner

Power systems the same as for shot 1010717016.

Gas setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC)
fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill J-Bottom with 30 psi He Hybrid DISABLED(PG5)

Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, DNB, VUV

RF STATUS:
Transmitters 1 and 2 in standby at 08:00.
Transmitters 3 and 4 in run-on started at 07:30.

Run Plan:
---------
Run a series of ohmic shots (at least 4) similar to 1010622006, 1MA, 5.3T,
nl4=.85e20. Use TCI feedback instead of Nl_ZMETER. Zweben is
interested in the time around 0.7 seconds, so the RF should try to avoid that
time. RF plans to make some modifications to the Jport control signals before
the run. These will be tested during plasma operation.

When we are finished with the imaging and J-port bashing, we will begin
MP259 beam-into-plasma with TF and vertical field only (No Plasmas).

Engineering setup for MP259:
-----------------------------
Fizzle detector should be moved to +0.35sec
TF start time to -0.9sec, invert at +0.40, TF fizzle delay to zero.
EF4 start time at -1.1sec, invert at +0.40
All other supplies off.
B-top valve hybrid enabled, all others disabled.

Shots will be run under hybrid control, using segment 1 only.
Beam should be at full energy (49kV)

Use pg4 pre-puff to raise torus pressure to 1mTorr at 0.2 - 0.3sec (estimate
400msec pulse width)

Two sets of TF are requested, 5.3T and 4.5T. For each, EF4 currents of -1, 0,
1, 3, and 5 kA are requested.

These shots should be operated with a Bt flattop during the 100ms beam pulse.
The beam plans on being fired at 200ms, so a Bt flattop from 190ms to 310ms
would be acceptable.

One successful shot for each pitch angle should be sufficient.

The rep rate for these shots should be much higher than plasma shots, so if
all goes well we may finish before 17:00.

At the conclusion of the run, we will begin glow cleaning in He, which will be
continued until Sunday afternoon, when a fresh boronization will begin. The
object of this is to reduce the H/D ratio to more acceptable levels.

Jul 20 2001 09:43:35:537AMSteve WolfeLoad prepared starting shot

early disruption. CHopper problem; wasn't enabled at PLC.

fast current rise, bouncer; pressure is a little low,
it should come up by itself next shot. Bz and Br a tad negative,
