| Session Leader (1st ten shots) Hutch PO Irby Ten shots were dedicated to high-field plasma operation. We operated at toroidal fields up to 8.0T for the first time in several years. All systems functioned nominally, and several 1MA plasmas were produced. ICRF heating (D-He3 minority heating scenario) was applied successfully, but not efficiently. This operation was important to be sure that there was no engineering difficulty with 8T operation or to reveal those difficulties prior to magnet inspection. No problems were discovered. |

| Phys op: J. Irby Session Leader: J. Terry/ S. Wolfe/ J. Irby Following is the report describing the second half of the 1010803 run, which continues with the long pulse experiments, investigating wall/gas inventory issues and divertor heating issues. RUNPLAN ECDC between shots in D2 for all shots to control the H/D Shot #"1" - begin from the low density shot 1010802022, but with 1 MW of RF from .6 s until 2.6 s. The Ip EOF is programmed for 3sec, and on 022 we got to 2.8 or so before it disrupted. The low density should be below the H-mode low density limit, so we can hope to remain in L-mode, but with somewhat higher temperature. This might be enough to prevent the ef1's from hitting the current limit and causing a disruption. However, we have no experience coupling to such a low density, so it may take a few shots to get the RF to stay on. Also on this shot repeat the pitcher puffs, which had some interesting features on 1010802022, however turn off the nl feedback during the puffs at 1 and 2 sec, so they aren't truncated by the feedback response. (On 022 these puffs broke the coupling between midplane pressure and density with the pressure staying high and the density dropping. This implies that something is changing in how the gas inventory is distributed.) Shot #"2" - same as #1, lower the Z position of the X-point early in the pulse by 1 cm. Don't try to keep it low since this will cause us to reach the EF1 limit. The Z position will therefore rise later in the pulse. Shot #"3" - same as #1, but increase the RF power to 1.5 MW and flap the flappers at 1.5 s and 2.5 s, OPEN for 0.25 s. (Keep the Pitcher puffs.) The increased RF power may put us into H-mode. Shot #"4" - Same as 1 and 2 but reduce EOF to 2.7 s and begin N_2 feedback to reduce the heatload on the divertor. Leave bolofeed on its present wire and change the Ref of 9-12 to "10", since strkpsi control isn't being used. Steve Wolfe has the wire set up correctly, so program the waveform to be ~30% higher than the "no-puff" signal put a gain of 5 on the wire. ***************************************** RESULTS We took over the run on shot 1010803011 and had 9 shots. This part of the run was successful. We investigated further, although did not solve, the low density gas inventory story. We showed that the wall does NOT saturate at a time <3 seconds, at least at the low densities run in this experiment. We also showed that the inventory in the walls is not so large that it will significantly affect our ability to run at low density. The shots related to these observations are 1010802021,002 and 1010803013 and 015 (X pt lower with no effect). We observed H-modes at NL04 of ~4e19 with a power of 1 MW. This may be the lowest density for H-mode on C-Mod. Shot 1010803014. We observed a (poorer) confinement mode at these low densities. Temperature drops, sawtooth amplitude decreases, and fueling efficiency decreases (as evidenced by the Ha increase). Shots 1010803011, 013, 015, 018, 019 and shots from 1010802 We were able to puff N_2 via feedback in an attempt to reduce the heat load on the divertor. The effects on the divertor were monitored by the IR camera, but the results still need analysis. This comparison occurred on shots 101080318 (no puff) and 019 (N_2 puff). Shot 011 - Ip flattop to 2.5 s, RF on at 1.0 MW for 1.9 s, causing dithers between ELMfree, EDA, and L-mode, neither gas puff is seen on the density, but there are steps in both the divertor pressure and the midplane pressure at each puff (no decay on midplane pressure, no decay on divertor pressure for first puff, long decay on second puff) pre H-mode density was 5e19 (NL04) (3e19 was programmed), post H-mode density was 1.18e20. Shot 012 - disrupted after breaker pulled at 0.53 s Shot 013 - Ip flattop to 2.86 s, RF on at 1.0 MW from 1.3 to 2.6 - no H-mode! both gas puffs are seen on density and midplane pressure - essentially the same as 1010802022. The implication from this shot and 1010802021 and 1010802022 is that the wall can only supply a small amount of gas which cannot lead to loss of density control at C-Mod densities (even AT current drive densities). pre H-mode density was 3e19 (NL04) Shot 014 - Asked for a repeat of 013, but with the X point lower by 1 cm early (i.e. at 1 s) in the pulse. result - Ip flattop to 2.5 s, RF on at 1.0 MW from 0.6 to 2.5 s, causing dithers between ELMfree, EDA, and L-mode. The reason it went into H-mode is because of a small puff arising from the antenna turn on. The density rise due to that puff was to 4e19. Neither gas puff is seen on the density, but there are steps in both the divertor pressure and the midplane pressure at each puff. Each puff changed the character of the H-mode. pre H-mode density was 3e19 (NL04) Shot 015 - Asked for a repeat of 014, but with no RF result - Ip flattop to 2.66s, The response to the puffs are very similar to shot 1010802022. There are steps in the midplane pressure at each puff. The conclusion is that the X pt position is not a factor in this midplane pressure phenomenon. non-puff density was 2.4e19 (NL04) Shot 016 - Start Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.1 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 2.6 s result - disrupted at 0.9s, i.e. before BOLOFEED had a chance to turn on. Shot 017 - Again attempt Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.25 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 2.6 s result - disrupted at 1.17s, this is before BOLOFEED was to turn on, but in fact the J-bottom (N_2) valve may have been open a little. No increased NVI was seen with McPherson. Shot 018 - Again attempt Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.25 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 2.6 s result- Ip flattop to 3.0 s, disrupted on the way down at 3.17 s. BOLOFEED was turned on. No increased NVI was seen with McPherson. Poor transport mode seen starting at 1.175 s (sawteeth amplitude decreases, H_a increases) density at 2.4e19 Shot 019 - Again attempt Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.25 V on BOLOFEED, but increase gain by a factor of ~4 Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 3.0 s result- Ip flattop to 2. s, disrupted. BOLOFEED was turned on. Increased NVI and NV was seen with McPherson -signal increased linearly from valve turn on. Strange transport mode seen starting at 1. 4 s (sawteeth amplitude decreases, H_a increases) coincident with the N_2 feedback valve opening density at 2.5e19 |

| Physop Summary for Run 1010803 PO: Irby EO: Cochran, Dekow, Parkin SL: Terry/Marmar/Hutch Run in Support of: MP#283 Long Pulse MP#286 Divertor/Long Pulse MP#EM_IHH 8T operation Summary: This run went extremely well from the PO point-of-view. We began the run doing the high field tests. After a standard 5.3 T startup shot, we increased the TF field shot-to-shot in 0.5 T steps. Startup was very reliable, even though we made no attempt to keep the TF field constant at startup by changing the TF start time. We had two fizzles during this part of the run probably associated with pressure and not fields, though we did tweak Bz0 a couple of times. From data taken during the TF backporch it was clear that the joint resistances were not being affected by the high field operation during the shots. However, the between shot scanner measurements of the highest joint resistance actually decreased from the 4 to the 2 uOhm level. Backporch resistances were in the 1.8 to 1.9 uOhm range (about the same as 5 T operation). No excursions of joint resistance of interest were noted during long pulse operation either. OH coax resistances did go up during the high field run, but were coming back down during the long pulse operation. The machine ran well during long pulse operation also, except for the power supply limitations mentioned by Steve Wolfe in his 1010803 run summmary. We obtained several long discharges the longest of which lasted 3.12 s. The last three shots of the day were 2 s long, 150 kA, TF only shots to warm up the TF and make cylinder removal easier. We raised the TF temperature about 90 C by the end of shot 22. Problems during this run were associated mostly with settings of protection circuitry that required small tweaks as we attemped high field and long pulse operation. Several fuses were blown in the TF and at least one in the EF1 supply. We now have the data we need to improve these systems before the next period of long pulse operation (which I suspect will be before Mar 03). I would like to congratulate the many people involved in the months of effort required to run the long pulse work so successfully. | Aug 3 2001 03:14:28:263PM | Jim Terry | MP #286a (Long Pulse Experiments) will take over the 2nd half of the run. The plan (following the results of the 1010802 long pulse run) is as follows: Shot #1 - begin from the low density shot 1010802022, but with 1 MW of RF from .6 s until 2.6 s. (On 022 these puffs broke the coupling between midplane pressure and density with the pressure staying high and the density dropping.) Shot #2 - same as #1, lower the Z position of the X-point early in the pulse by 1 cm. Don't try to keep it low since this will cause us to reach the EF1 limit. The Z position will therefore rise later in the pulse. Shot #3 - same as #1, but increase the RF power to 1.5 MW and flap the flappers at 1.5 s and 2.5 s, OPEN for 0.25 s. (Keep the Pitcher puffs.) The increased RF power may put us into H-mode. Shot #4 - Same as 1 and 2 but reduce EOF to 2.7 s and begin N_2 feedback to reduce the heatload on the divertor. Leave bolofeed on its present wire and change the Ref of 9-12 to "10", since strkpsi control isn't being used. Steve Wofle has the wire set up correctly, so program the waveform to be ~30% higher than the "no-puff" signal put a gain of 5 on the wire. On the last 2 or 3 shots of the day extend the TF. Summary: Eight Tesla operation went fine with no unexpected engineering difficulties. There is no evidence of degradation of the magnet operation at 8T. RF heating at 8T is inefficient as always, but temperature rises were seen. Shot 10 was an interesting pellet shot. The 10 shots we had covered our intentions fully and successfully. |
| Aug 3 2001 03:11:00:953PM | 1010803011 | Jim Terry | MP #286a (Long Pulse Experiments) took over the run on shot 1010803011 Shot 011 - Ip flattop to 2.5 s (disrupted), RF on at 1.0 MW for 1.9 s, causing dithers between ELMfree, EDA, and L-mode, neither gas puff is seen on the density, but there are steps in both the divertor pressure and the midplane pressure at each puff (no decay on midplane pressure, no decay on divertor pressure for first puff, long decay on second puff) pre H-mode density was 5e19 (NL04), post H-mode density was 1.18e20. |
| Aug 3 2001 04:02:55:887PM | 1010803012 | Jim Terry | Asked for a repeat of 011, but with 1st puff delayed to 1.3 s. Hopefully pre-H-mode density will be lower Shot 012 - breaker pulled at 0.5 s, plasma disrupted at 0.53 s |
| Aug 3 2001 04:27:10:260PM | 1010803013 | Jim Terry | Asked for a repeat of 011, but with 1st puff delayed to 1.3 s. Hopefully pre-H-mode density will be lower Shot 013 - Ip flattop to 2.86 s, (then disrupted at 2.95 s), RF on at 1.0 MW from 1.3 to 2.6 - no H-mode! both gas puffs are seen on density and midplane presure - essentially the same as 1010802022. pre H-mode density was 3e19 (NL04) |
| Aug 3 2001 05:17:51:640PM | 1010803014 | Jim Terry | Asked for a repeat of 013, but with X pt lowered by 1 cm at 1 s Shot 014 - Ip flattop to 2.6s, RF on at 1.0 MW from 0.6 to 2.6 s, causing dithers between ELMfree, EDA, and L-mode. The reason it went into H-mode is because of a small puff arising from the antenna turn on. The density rise due to that puff was to 4e19. Neither gas puff is seen on the density, but there are steps in both the divertor pressure and the midplane pressure at each puff. Each puff changed the character of the H-mode. pre H-mode density was 3e19 (NL04) |
| Aug 3 2001 05:31:01:370PM | 1010803015 | Jim Terry | Asked for a repeat of 014, but with no RF Shot 015 - Ip flattop to 2.66s, The response to the puffs are very similer to shot 1010802022. There are steps in the midplane pressure at each puff. The conclusion is that the X pt position is not a factor in this midplane pressure phenomenon. non-puff density was 2.4e19 (NL04) |
| Aug 3 2001 05:43:13:657PM | 1010803016 | Jim Terry | Start Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.1 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 2.6 s Shot 016 - disrupted at 0.9s, i.e. before BOLOFEED had a chance to turn on. |
| Aug 3 2001 06:28:38:953PM | 1010803017 | Jim Terry | Again attempt Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.25 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 2.6 s Shot 017 - disrupted at 1.17s, this is before BOLOFEED was to turn on, but in fact the J-bottom (N_2) valve may have been open a little. No increased NVI was seen with McPherson. |
| Aug 3 2001 06:47:27:350PM | 1010803018 | Jim Terry | Again attempt Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.25 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 2.6 s Shot 018 - Ip flattop to 3.0 s, disrupted on the way down at 3.17 s. BOLOFEED was turned on. No increased NVI was seen with McPherson. Strange transport mode seen starting at 1.175 s (sawteethampliturde decreases, H_a increases) density at 2.4e19 |
| Aug 3 2001 07:48:06:373PM | 1010803019 | Jim Terry | Again attempt Nitrogen feedback - look for NVI - Lyman alpha in VUV Ask for 0.25 V on BOLOFEED Ask for 1 MW of RF from 0.6 to 3.0 s Shot 019 - Ip flattop to 2.92 s, disrupted. BOLOFEED was turned on. Increased NVI and NV was seen with McPherson. Poor transport mode seen starting at 1.43 s (sawteeth amplitude decreases, H_a increases) coincident with N_2 feedback valve opening. density at 2.5e19 |
