Engineering setup for Tuesday 18 June 2002

ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 8:00 am.
We may want ECDC in D2 between shots.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

Power systems the same as for shot 1020607016.

Gas setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC)
fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
leave J-Bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG5)

Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:

Run Plan:

Lengthen plasma duration by controlling gas puffing and density.

Start from 1020607016; a short 800 kA shot.
We may want ECDC in D2 between shots.

We would like to have the TCI working. We will probably also puff some
argon for HIREX Ti (and Te) measurements.

Overnight ECDC in D2 was done.

Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found

Loaded PCS from shot 1020607016.

Shot 01 -- Test. Pre-fill pressure is rather low, even though the pulse
is the same 29 ms as last week. Plenum pressure is a little low.
It'll be brought up to 6 psi for the next shot.

I've zeroed the NL_04 gain for all of segment 2, and I've set the
pre-programmed voltage to be ~ -25 V for C-side valve (pulse gas 3).
This is because we don't know how well the TCI will be working.

Shot 02 -- Test. Pre-fill pressure looks good now.

Shot 03 -- Plasma. Ip=0.73 MA. Disrupted at 0.43 s. TCI worked fine.
NL_04=0.6-0.7e20 m-2 until 0.4 s, then the density starts to rise.

Next shot: turn on nl_04 feedback (0.7e20 m-2), set pre-programmed
voltage for C-side to 0 volts in segment 2. Also adjust Btor to
be 5.3 T for the entire shot (was set at 4.8 T in segment 2 for
some reason).

Steve Wolfe is working on getting EFIT going.

Shot 04 -- Dud. The F21 flux loop is having an offset problem. There was
also a camac problem with magnetics traq_2 (mostly Bp data).

Shot 05 -- Dud. Fields look reasonable, as does gas. F21 looks fine as well.
Must just be dirt from shot 3.

Steve and I have been looking at processed BP_14 and BP_15, and we
think something is wrong with these signals, although they begin at,
and return to zero. These signals use BP15_JK and BP16_JK. The
corresponding signals on the BC and DE quadrants look much more
reasonable.

Between-shot ECDC is starting now.

Shot 06 -- Fizzle. I think it was the 15 minutes of ECDC that got it back.
Bz0 and Br0 dropped a tiny bit.

ECDC in D2 between shots.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill pulse length by 3 ms (29 -> 26 ms)

Shot 07 -- Fizzle. Looks like it hit something. Fields look good (Br0 jumped
back up to pre-shot_06 value without me doing anything.) Brian
Labombard has just calibrated the F-side-ratiomatic signal and
finds that it was reading 35% low until now. He has gone back and
corrected all the shots from today. It's now showing 0.07 mtorr.

Between-shot ECDC

Next shot: no changes.

Shot 08 -- Dud. Time to change the pre-fill.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill pulse by another 3 ms (26 -> 23 ms)

Shot 09 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.28 s, Ip=0.6 MA. nl_04=0.9e20 m-2.
Carbon II burns out pretty well. Noticeable hesitation on
current rise between t=10 and 20 ms. Bz0 was a little high around
t=10 ms. Pre-fill=0.06 mtorr. Not clear what caused the
disruption, although the 2pi bolo shows lots of spiky stuff.

Shot 10 -- Fizzle. Bz0 looks a bit high.

Next shot: reduce IC_EF4 by 10 amps.

Shot 11 -- Fizzle.

Next shot: lower the pre-fill another 2 ms.

Shot 12 -- Plasma. Ip=0.75 MA. Disrupted at t=0.61 s. H/D<=0.4. We have
GPC Te data (1 keV ?). nl_04=1.0e20 m-2. Argon was definitely
puffed.

Between-shot ECDC

Next shot: no changes

Shot 13 -- Fizzle. Probably just dirt.

No ECDC, per Jim Irby's request, just to see what happens.

Next shot: no changes

Shot 14 -- Plasma. Disrupted at 0.3 s. Most of these plasmas have been
very resistive, with the current turning over prior to the
disruption. Current rise still has a hesitation.

No ECDC.

Next shot: no changes

Shot 15 -- Fizzle.

Re-starting between-shot ECDC

Shot 16 -- Fizzle. Bz0 has dropped a bit.

shot. All masses up to mass 100 nicely represented
on the RGA.

MKS gauges indicate up to 80 mTorr of pressure after
the shot. TCI gatevalves closed.

Earl has H-to-D running. Starts low and ramps up
to about 100% by the end of the shot
