| Physics Operator Summary for Th. 6/27/2002 MP259 MSE Calibration RF Conditioning between shots SL: Yuh, Wukitch PO: Wolfe EO: Dekow Plan: ------ ECDC Overnight stopping by 7:00 AM Run begins at 8:00AM and ends at 2:00PM We will begin with TF and EF4 beam-into-gas shots for the MSE. RF will do RF conditioning of J-port into vacuum between shots. Later in the day we will resume plasma operation. Engineering Setup: Power System setup as for 1010720012 : TF and EF4 only enabled for hybrid control fizzle detector moved to 0.35sec Gas setup: B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC) C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG3) J-Bottom leave as is Enable the following gate valves: DNB RF Setup: Xmtr #3 and 4 in Run On PCS: Use segment 1 only, begin with load from 1010720012. We want 0.4mTorr this time, so reduce the gas puff duration from 400msec to 130msec. Can tune this with no power shots. Results: -------- We didn't get to do any plasma shots. Howard got most of the MSE shots he wanted, except for the highest vertical field point at 4.5T. EF3 blew fuses and repair would have taken too long. The Bz=.7T point at 5.3T had a short beam pulse, but may be usable. Things got off to a slow start. There was a power glitch last night that caused several problems, and the high humidity cased condensation problems in one OH supply and the RF crowbar cabinets; the latter led to an arc that required several power room entries to track down and fix. One consequence of the glitch was that SHAPE shut down. This caused the hybrid coldstart to hang of course. Once I figured out that SHAPE was down, I rebooted it; this takes about half an hour. ibq$bcs search showed all nodes reachable. I then had to stop the BITBUS and HLOADER_SERVER servers before I could do the coldstart successfully. All of this got done before 8:00, barely. The Gas_camac Incaa_01 failed to init on shot 1, which meant we couldn't look at the pressures. Dave Bellofato power cycled the crate, after which it armed ok, and it worked the rest of the day. We ran with the pump valves closed. My idea of doing this was to get a flat pressure pulse, since Howard had originally planned to vary the beam timing to see the end of at TF pulse. However, it turns out that the beam duct pumps on the torus for a long time; the gate valve closes somewhere between 2sec and 5sec, and typically the pressure drops a factor of 2 while it's open. We did a full sequence of shots at tf=-5.3T (I_tf=-150kA) with EF4 values of -1, 0, 1, 3, and 5kA, and one point with EF3 added in at 6kA. A second attempt with the EF3 included resulted in a blown fuse (estimated repair time > 30min), so we left EF3 off for the rest of the run. We then did a second sequence at tf=-4.5T (I_tf=-127kA) with the same EF4 currents. The final data point was a tf=-2.5T (I_tf= -72kA); this took 3 tries because I kept screwing up the setup, but we finally got it just at 2:00PM. The RF group fixed their arc problem and finally got some between shot conditioning done starting around shot 12. Their shot rate was limited because the C-Mod data acquisition cycle was taking nearly the full ten minutes minimum recool time. It's not clear what was taking so long, since we had been getting much shorter data store cycles on plasma runs. |

| Jun 27 2002 07:39:12:937AM | Steve Wolfe | Setting up for beam into gas MSE calibration Inmport seq 1 from 1010720012 shorten pg4 to 131msec (was 400) turn off seg 2 load/clean coldstart seems to hang. shape had crashed last night. Reboot it in the interface room, may need to stop the servers. bitbus errors on all nodes. When it finishes I'll stop the servers and try again. | |
| Jun 27 2002 07:51:01:953AM | Steve Wolfe | in tcl stop server bitbus and hloader_server log into shape, it's real slow. batch_2 still running do a bcs search BCS>sea Bitbus Addresses Device Code (16): 99, Version Number (16): 1 Node List (10): 0 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 16 17 18 19 24 25 26 27 32 33 34 35 40 41 42 43 48 49 50 51 76 80 81 82 83 97 98 99 looks ok. try another coldstart (hyb_Init_dispatch) ok, all matrices respond. hloader server ok. We'll do a no power test for shot 1 anyway. | |
| Jun 27 2002 08:34:48:787AM | 1020627001 | Steve Wolfe | shot#1: gas/dnb/hybrid test only. Use gatevalves closed in pulse. toggle ninja off at the plc screen- they pulsed last shot yesterday and I don't know they turned it off. beam will fire at 0.15sec. gas went. gas_camac incaa had an init failure, so no ratiomatic. itg went to 1.9e-4 beam didn't go. operator error. rf crew will look for their arc. |
| Jun 27 2002 08:49:04:620AM | 1020627002 | Steve Wolfe | shot#2: gas/dnb/hybrid test only. again. beam will fire at 0.15sec. dave b. power cycled crate, I init'ed the incaa in tcl ok. try again. beam went, perhaps at the wrong time? at .15sec the ratiomatic reads .475mTorr Bill sees a beam signature at 0.4sec, p0 down to .46mTorr pressure falls until 3.5sec, when it goes flat at .27mTorr; presumably it is pumping out into beam duct. |
| Jun 27 2002 09:04:10:907AM | 1020627003 | Steve Wolfe | shot#3: repeat with re-timed beam. cycle had hung on daqa analysis_server: video_daq:kill_m2_srv and gary had to blow it away small gas puff? only 8e-5 on torus gauge got a pulse. ratiomatic signal looks ok, same as last time. Howard says signals acceptable, beam current still a little low. next shot: tf -150kA and ef4 at -1kA. |
| Jun 27 2002 09:31:45:353AM | 1020627004 | Steve Wolfe | shot#4: tf -150kA and ef4 at -1kA. Ian's vacbrbz was somehow going to barolo server and failing. I changed it to claret but it won't go for this shot. got some 400a induced current on ef3; next time we'll shut the aux power off to stop the gates. next shot: increase gas to 165msec, to get pressure up to 0.6mTorr. |
