| Run Summary for 1020628: Plasma Conditioning Continued SL: Dekow/Fitzgerald PO: Granetz SL: Irby/Wolfe This was a very good run with the machine finally cleaning up enough to get more full length discharges than fizzles. We began with a successful test of the EF3 supply under PLC control. A bad SCR was replaced before the run. We continued double null discharges on shots 03 and 06. On shot 09 we reloaded a lower null divertor shot to compare with the upper null case. The H-to-D ratio did not change appreciably between the two case. The amount of gas required to maintain the 1e20 /m^2 density was also very similar. Turning off the gas beyond 1.0 s did not result in a decrease in the density at any point in the run today. Steve Wolfe estimates we have had about 45 discharge seconds so far during this campaign. The H-to-D ratio is approximately 20% at 1.5 seconds; dropping from 30% during run 1020626. We typically have required more than 100 discharge seconds to reduce the H-to-D enough to boronize. It is still not clear whether or not we have gained any benefit from baking the BN tiles. We may find out only by running discharges until the H-to-D finally drops below 10% or saturates at a higher level. We hope to complete the cleanup by the second run day next week and then boronize on July 8 or 9. A comparison of the upper and lower pressure gauges clearly indicates we can control the relative pressures by moving the plasma from double to single null. Brian also ran the flapper at BC and was able to see the pressure modulation very clearly on the new Penning gauge there. However, the pressure indicated by the gauge was 60 to 100 mTorr, and needs to be checked out for proper calibration/operation. The rf group began running j-port into discharges today at 1.25 s. Approx 30 to 40 kW of net power was used for tuneup. Amanda reports that the radial scan of the ECE is complete and she can do her calibration. We lost shot 17 because of and IOC fault on the TF before the shot. Score: duds 08,15 fizzles 02,04,05,07,11 plasmas 03,06,09,10,12,13,16,19,20,21,22,23 eng 14,17 tests 01 lost 18 |

| Physics operator summary for run 1020628 (Friday): Session leader: J. Irby Physics operator: R. Granetz Engineer in charge: Summary: A good day, with machine startup reliability improving markedly. We started with a couple of high-triangularity, double-null discharges and then switched back to a normal lower-single-null configuration, with the intent of comparing the H/D ratio. We didn't see much difference...for both configurations H/D was 0.15-0.20. See Jim's session summary for more info. As the day progressed, we turned on the A and F scanning probes, the flappers, NINJA puffing, and even some low-power RF from J-port. Note for physops: firing the RF between shots into vacuum has a very high probability of causing a dud unless ECDC is done after the RF. The DNB did not operate today because of a problem with the charging supply. Scorecard: 12 plasmas 5 fizzles 2 duds 1 tests 3 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 23 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Friday 28 June 2002 Session leader: J. Irby Physics operator: R. Granetz ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 8:00 am. Set up for possible ECDC in D2 between shots. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems the same as for shot 1020626027 Note: We'll have to start with an EF3 test, due to the blown fuse on Thursday. Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave J-Bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG5) Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: DNB, ECE, VUV ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: Xmtr #3 and 4 in Run On by 06:30 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan: Note: We'll have to start with an EF3 test, due to the blown fuse on Thursday. Compare H/D ratio in high-triangularity, nearly double-null plasmas with H/D ratio in standard triangularity, lower single-null plasmas. Start from 1020626027 (high-triangularity, nearly double-null) We may want ECDC in D2 between shots. We'll switch to segment 2 of shot 1020620008 for the standard shaped plasma, with the caveat that the density programming will have to be matched to the highly shaped shot. RF may do conditioning of J-port into vacuum between shots. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overnight ECDC in D2 was done. Hybrid coldstart done by Jim Irby earlier this morning; no errors found at that time. But I just tried it and I got an error about an unreachable node. Steve Wolfe is checking into it. Loaded PCS from shot 1020626027, but changed density demand to drop negative after t=1.0 s (per request of Jim Irby). The DNB HV charging supply (CHAPS) won't turn on. No beam for now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Test. EF3 under PLC control to check fuse repair. 1.7 kA, OK Next shot: go for plasma. Shot 02 -- Fizzle. Fields and gas look fine. Next shot: no changes. There is a delay now to investigate an alternator fault condition. Shot 03 -- Plasma. Disrupted late in rampdown. nl_04 = 1.0 - 1.2 e20 m-2. Double-null, delta_L=delta_U=0.8. Ip=0.76 MA, Btor=5.3 T. H/D=0.15 at t=1.5 s. Next shot: repeat, no changes Shot 04 -- Fizzle. Fields and gas look fine. Next shot: repeat, no changes. RF tree will be included. Shot 05 -- Fizzle. Bz is a little high. Next shot: Add -10 amps to IC_EF4. There is a delay now for Jim Irby to work on the TCI laser. Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. Double-null, delta_L=delta_U=0.8. H/D=0.20 at t=1.5 s. Next shot: switch to standard single-null plasma shape, pulse the RF between shots, and reduce pre-fill gas puff by 1 ms. Load segment 2 with seg 2 from 1020620008, and then load wire 14 (nl_04) from the last shot (1020628006). RF has started firing pulses between shots. Shot 07 -- Fizzle. Gas was still a little high. Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 2 ms. Dexter and Bill are replacing one of the DNB supply components, using a spare provided by the BINP team. Shot 08 -- Dud. There was gas, so perhaps it was due to the RF firing between shots. Next shot: no changes, after 10 minutes of ECDC Start between-shot ECDC in D2. Shot 09 -- Plasma. Standard lower-single null shape (kappa=1.65, delta_L=0.5). nl_04=1.0e20 m-2. H/D=0.16 at t=1.5 s. Jim Irby reports that it took a similar amount of gas to fuel this discharge compared to the double-null, high-triangularity discharges earlier today. There was a failure of some magnetics DAQ after t=1.3 s. Next shot: no changes, no between-shot ECDC, no between-shot RF. Shot 10 -- Plasma. Nearly identical to last shot. H/D=0.20 at t=1.5 s. Next shot: no changes, no between-shot ECDC, no between-shot RF. Shot 11 -- Fizzle. Br0 was a bit high, but it seems to be bouncing around a little on its own. Next shot: reduce Br0 offset by 0.5 mT. No between-shot ECDC, not between-shot RF. Shot 12 -- Plasma. SNL, 0.76 MA, 5.3 T, 1.0e20 m-2. H/D=0.20 at t=1.5 s. Br0 is a bit low, but I'll leave it alone. Next shot: no changes. Resume firing RF pulses between shots. Shot 13 -- Plasma. SNL, 0.76 MA, 5.3 T, 1.0e20 m-2. H/D=0.22 at t=1.5 s. Next shot: no changes, still no between-shot ECDC. RF is firing between shots. Shot 14 -- Aborted. IOC faults from 3 of the TF cabinets. RF is firing between shots. Shot 15 -- Dud. RF? Next shot: no changes. RF is firing between shots. Between-shot ECDC is going after the RF finishes. Shot 16 -- Plasma. SNL, 0.76 MA, 5.3 T, 1.0e20 m-2. H/D=0.17 at t=1.5 s. There was a failure of some magnetics DAQ after t=1.3 s. Next shot: Brian will be firing both the A and F scanning probes at t=0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 s. The RF will fire both J-port transmitters at t=1.25 s. RF is firing between shots. Between-shot ECDC is going after the RF finishes. Shot 17 -- Aborted. There was a fault from the alternator. Next shot: try again. RF (J-port), scanning probes (A and F), and flappers too. Shot 18 -- Aborted. Nothing fired. MDS problems. Shot 19 -- Plasma. SNL, 0.76 MA, 5.3 T, 1.0e20 m-2. H/D=0.17 at t=1.5 s. The A and F probes fired with no problems. Prf=20 kW net for about 20 ms. Next shot: no PCS changes. Scanning probes, flappers, and RF will fire again. Some NINJA puffing too. Shot 20 -- Plasma. SNL, 0.76 MA, 5.3 T, 1.0e20 m-2. H/D=0.18 at t=1.5 s. We had probe scans, flappers, NINJA puffs, and RF. Prf=45 kW for 20 ms. Density is starting to creep up after 1 s. Next shot: no PCS changes. Scanning probes, flappers, and RF will fire again. Some NINJA puffing too. Shot 21 -- Plasma. Same-o, same-o. Pleasently boring. H/D=0.19 at t=1.5 s. Prf=38 kW for 30 ms. Next shot: repeat everything again Shot 22 -- Plasma. We're on a roll. Prf=58 kW for 10 ms. H/D=0.20 at t=1.5 s. Next shot: repeat everything again. Shot 23 -- Plasma. Another good one. H/D=0.20 at t=1.5 s. Prf=30 kW for 40 ms. End of run. |
