After reaching 35 kV on all systems (although not clear of faults), we began plasma discharges. Plasma conditioning progressed even slower than vacuum conditioning. The improvement in the phase detection has resulted in much better tuning capability. Unlike previous campaigns, the system can be tuned in a single discharge. We found that we had to turn off D and J-port antennas to focus on E-port which was working much better than either D or J into plasma. We isolated a problem with the E-port antenna voltage protection circuit. When the trip value is above 7700 mV, the system seems to fault although the measured value is well below (see 011-015). D-port appears to be have particularly odd behavior that will take some time to sort out. J-port performance is also puzzling. This will take some time to sort out. |

| Physics operator summary for run 1020717 (Wednesday): Session leader: S. Wukitch Physics operator: R. Granetz Engineer in charge: G. Dekow, W. Parkin Summary: The entire morning was devoted to RF conditioning into vacuum, rather than tokamak operation. Once we began plasma operation, the machine ran very reliably from shot 3 onward, especially considering the recent boronization. The E-antenna was working well, with power up to 0.5+ MW in very clean pulses lasting up to 0.6 second long. D-antenna was also being exercised in very short pulses, and the J-antenna was only used on shot 5. H/D stayed around 3.5-4.0% for all shots. We could see some hints of heating on various signals. There were no disruptions today. Scorecard: 12 plasmas 2 fizzles 1 dud 0 tests 0 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 15 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Wednesday 17 July 2002 Session leader: S. Start by loading shot 1020716015 (standard SNL, 0.8 MA, 5.3 T, 1.e20 m-2) or a similar one from later in Tuesday's run, and let the RF go at it. Note: The RF will be firing into vacuum before the run begins, so we will want to do 10 minutes of ECDC just before the first shot. If the H/D begins to rise during the run, we will want to do between-shot ECDC as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Overnight ECDC in D2 was done. Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found Loaded PCS from shot 1020716015 for all segments. Do 10 minutes of ECDC prior to the first shot, since the RF was firing into vacuum prior to the run. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Wukitch now says the RF will be ready at noon. We'll do 10 minutes of ECDC at that time, so the first plasma shot should be 12:15-12:20. Shot 01 -- Fizzle. Fields look okay, pressure is a bit high. Next shot: reduce pre-fill pulse by 3 ms. Shot 02 -- Dud. Pre-fill pressure is now down to 0.058 mtorr. I guess I'll have to add some back. Next shot: increase pre-fill by 2 ms, so that it will now be just 1 ms less than for the first shot. Shot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.8 MA, 5.3 T, SNL, nl_04=1.0e20 m-2 Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.5% for the entire shot. No significant RF power. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.5-4.0% Prf_D=0.1 MW in multiple short pulses. Prf_E=0.1-0.2 MW in multiple short pulses. Prf_J=0.1 MW. Jim Irby points out that the small variations in H/D during the shot are correlated with J-port power. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.5%, so still don't need to do ECDC between shots yet. The NINJA system is puffing D2 from the inboard midplane. Prf_E=0.1 MW in short pulses. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.5%. Prf_E=0.1-0.2 MW for an 0.5 second- long ramped pulse. Tuning on E is looking real good! Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.6% Prf_D=0.1 MW in many short pulses. Prf_E=0.1-0.2 MW. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.9% Prf_D=0.1 MW in many short pulses. Prf_E=0.1-0.3 MW in a beautiful 0.6 second long ramped pulse. If things continue like this, I will start between-shot ECDC after the next plasma. Next shot: no PCS changes Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=4.0% ... start between-shot ECDC. RF is identical to last shot. E-antenna really looks great. Next shot: no PCS changes. I hope the ECDC doesn't reduce the startup reliability. ECDC is now on between shots for 7.5 minutes. Shot 11 -- Fizzle. Pre-fill pressure is slightly higher, no doubt because of the ECDC. But will it drop back down on its own for the next (post-fizzle) shot? Next shot: let's try not making any changes...it's really tempting though. Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.2% . Prf_D=0.1 MW in many short pulses. Next shot: no changes. (No ECDC needed at this time.) Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.8%. Prf_E=0.1-0.4 MW in a clean ramp of 0.6 s duration. Next shot: no PCS changes, no ECDC. Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=3.6% Prf_E=0.1-0.5 MW in a clean ramp of 0.6 s duration. Pre-fill pressure was a touch high. Next shot: decrease pre-fill pulse by 0.5 ms (by moving just the top point, not the bottom one). Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. H/D=4.1%. Prf_E=0.4-0.6+ MW, but with multiple faults. End of run. |
