Summary:

Antenna operation was significantly improved over 1020717. Before the
run, the D and E-port were vacuum conditioned to 35 kV (0.5 sec) and
the voltage and phase balance fault electronics were modified to
eliminate oscillation in an instrumentation amplifier. D-port and
E-port reached 20 kV and 25 kV respectively. They also operated to
~1.4 MW together. J-port had less vacuum conditioning and its
operation into plasma reflected this fact. J-port at low power
behaved very poorly and required a fast rise time (~1 msec to 100 kW)
to avoid what appears to be discharge formation. D and E-port still
require more vacuum and plasma conditioning. J-port requires
significantly more vacuum conditioning and work on the phase feedback.

Goal: RF conditionning.

Plan: Start by loading shot 1020717012, and let the RF go at it.


Summary:

The run started a little after 10 AM. First 6 shots were alternating fizzles/plasmas with vain attempts
by PO to tweak the fields and gas to get better performance. Then the startup segment was loaded, developped
by Ian on July 2, minor changes were done to gas and Bz, and after that every single shot was
succesful without any intervention by PO. That allowed us to play with the plasma shape, changing
upper and lower triangularities (keeping the outer gap constant for RF) and develop the shape we will
use for JET identity experiments (lower delta =0.45, upper delta =0.4) and study the configuration
with minimum triangularities that we need for planned EDA operational space experiment.
It was found that minimum lower triangularity that can be achieved on C-Mod without moving outer
strike point out of the lower divertor is around 0.45.
The upper triangularity can be more or less safely decreased to the value of 0.2, but after that the
shape becomes too close to double null and the upper outer strike point moves too far out of
the divertor. When zero upper triangularity was programmed by mistake, the outer gap on top of the
antennae decreased dramatically (although the midplane outer gap stayed at 1 cm) and the plasma visibly touched the
upper edge of the J antenna.
Therefore - PLEASE, DO NOT EVER ATTEMPT TO RUN SHOT 1020719023 !
