D and E-port were conditioned to ~39 kV and 38 kV respectively. More time will be required to obtain the 40 kV limit. J4 conditioned easily to 34.5 kV but J3 required significant effort to condition. J3 eventually conditioned to 34 kV. The new re-try electronics was installed and demonstrated to function in E-port. The J-port phase feedback was also confirmed to be operating properly during plasma discharges. Plasma operation had some success. Discharge 013 had the cleanest RF pulses of the campaign. From DC0 the power level was 1.3 MW but DC1 and DC2 both suggest the net power was 1.8 MW. J-port was struggling until 012 and 013 but will need further conditioning to see improvement. Furthermore, injections on 004, 005, and 015 appear to eminate from the J-port antenna area. However, the RF is off at the time of the injections. Vacuum shots after 005 indicated that the B-dot probes are still functional. |

| Engineering Setup for TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2002 Continuation of RF Conditioning SL: Wukitch PO: Parker ECDC from 06:00-07:00 at 2e-4 T D2. ECDC for 10 minutes before run. **Run Begins at 10:00 and ends at 17:00** Power systems setup the same as for Shot 1020719002 Gas setup: B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid Enabled (PG1) B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC) C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3) J-Bottom leave as is, Hybrid DISABLED Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE RF Setup: All 4 transmitters in Run On by 07:00 RUN PLAN: We'll continue RF conditioning efforts RUN SUMMARY: The run got underway late (~10:30) due to need for RF conditioning. The first shot fizzled, possibly due to BZ offset being too large. This was reduced and the next two shots went off as planned with RF. Shots 4&5 disrupted, the cause apparently associated with some sort of arc appearing on the J port antenna, before the RF even turned on. The run was then delayed in order to test the integrity of the J port antenna probes, suspected as culprits in the arcing. No problem was found and the run then resumed. Shots 6&7 fizzled, apparently correlated with the appearance of a vacuum leak as indicated on the RGA (Strong appearance of 14 line, and significant level of 40.) Shot 8 ran, but shot 9 fizzled. The fizzles are correlated with higher levels of CII during the current ramp (but this could also be an effect, rather than a cause.) The fill pressure was then reduced by ~ 10% (the gauge was not working), and the next three shots ran as programmed, but without much power from J port. Unfortunately the camera looking at the J port antenna was not working on these shots, so it was not possible to tell if the arcing was still present. Shot 13 was programmed to be limited and it ran as programmed. Shot 14 fizzled, again with a high level of CII probably the result of the first limited shot since the break. Shot 15 then started up sluggishly, and disrupted early (~0.35 s). The camera looking at J port showed that the antenna again had arcing on its surface. Finally, the last shot fizzled, again correlated with a high level of CII. Scorecard: 7 Shots 6 Fizzles 3 Disruptions |

| Jul 23 2002 11:22:33:293AM | 1020723001 | Ron Parker | First shot delayed to allow for RF conditioning. Cold start revealed A matrix not responding. This was due to a reboot of Spanna without invoking ccl remcam. The first shot loaded was 1020719002, with segment 1 taken from 1020719023, segment 1. In the event, shot 1 fizzled possibly because the BZ offset was too negative. |
| Jul 23 2002 11:20:28:897AM | 1020723002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 succeeded. The only change from shot 1 was to increase EF4 from -1320 to -1310 A, since the BZ offset in shot 1 was ~ -4 mT at t=0. |
| Jul 23 2002 11:49:03:080AM | 1020723003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 ran well. Next shot: Repeat. |
| Jul 23 2002 12:22:23:180PM | 1020723004 | Ron Parker | Shot 4 disrupted beginning at ~ 0.3 s for no apparent reason. On further examination, the disruption appears to be due to a plasma interaction with the J-port antenna before the RF turns on. We'll try it again. |
| Jul 23 2002 12:23:29:650PM | 1020723005 | Ron Parker | Shot 5 also disrupted, again associated with an interaction with J port antenna. |
| Jul 23 2002 01:09:43:253PM | 1020723005 | Ron Parker | Following shot 5, which disrupted similarly to 4, although a bit later, there was a delay to test the RF probes via cold tests of J port antenna. The results were normal, so no obvious problem was identified. After a five minute ECDC, operation will be resumed. |
| Jul 23 2002 01:27:12:407PM | 1020723006 | Ron Parker | Shot 6 fizzled, probably due to choking on impurities left by the RF tests. Next shot will be a repeat. |
| Jul 23 2002 01:43:50:400PM | 1020723007 | Ron Parker | Shot 7 also was a fizzle. The RGA looks suspiciously like there may be a leak. There will be a delay while the vacuum integrity is checked. |
| Jul 23 2002 02:23:52:977PM | 1020723008 | Ron Parker | Shot 8 ran as programmed. |
| Jul 23 2002 02:25:11:493PM | 1020723009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 fizzled. Too much carbon in the initial burnout. We'll lower the pressure for the next shot (~ 10 %, 2 ms) |
| Jul 23 2002 02:43:01:460PM | 1020723009 | Ron Parker | Slight delay before shot 10 to fix camera looking at J port. |
| Jul 23 2002 02:52:23:207PM | 1020723010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 ran as programmed. Vacuum at time of pulse was ~9e-7 T |
| Jul 23 2002 03:34:46:583PM | 1020723011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 ran as programmed. |
| Jul 23 2002 03:47:25:307PM | 1020723012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 ran as programmed. Shot 13 will be programmed to run inner wall limited (with same outer gap.) |
| Jul 23 2002 04:13:13:490PM | 1020723013 | Ron Parker | Shot 13 ran as programmed, inner wall limited. Next shot: Repeat of 13. |
| Jul 23 2002 04:33:26:690PM | 1020723014 | Ron Parker | Shot 14 fizzled, probably due to impurities left behind by the limited discharge in shot 13. Next shot: Repeat. |
| Jul 23 2002 04:40:12:233PM | 1020723015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 started up, barely, but disrupted at ~ 0.35 s. Again, CII was high during the startup phase. Next shot will be the last, a repeat of shot 15. |
| Jul 23 2002 05:03:27:363PM | 1020723016 | Ron Parker | Shot 16 was a fizzle, consistent with high level of CII during current ramp. |
