It is a good run day overall. D and E can ran clean at 1.2 MW into H-modes.
At higher power level, they are still tripped out.

Here is the story on J: We were supposed to run the antenna at the dipole phase, and
it was supposed to heat plasma. After shot 20, Earl pointed out there was no
heating at all from J antenna even with 1.6 MW input. He suspected the J antenna
was running at the monopole phase. On shot 22, we tried Bt=4.5 Tesla to move J resonance
to the center. There was still no heating power.

I shifted the digital phase setpoint by 180 degrees since shot 24, and J succeeded
in heating plasma and made many H-modes at 1.6 MW level. All shots from 22 to 29
are 4.5 Tesla shots. I believe the present phase setting is the correct
[0,pi, 0, pi] phase setting. It also gave the same JVX phase measurement as we had
in last campaign. It suggested that we have been J antenna in the wrong phase
so far in this campaign.

On 1020801, the J antenna phase feedback system was changed to speed up the phase
lock time (now 15 ms). From the RF operational point of view, it requires a soft
startup with a low power period longer than 15 ms. This is a challenge on retries
after a fault. We have also substantially slow down the retry. However, as evident
in shot 29, the present retry circuit still cannot work at a high J power level
(2 MW).

J antenna now can run at 1.6 MW with length at 200 - 300 ms without trip. More
conditioning on this antenna is needed.

RF Setup: All 4 transmitters in Run On by 07:00

Run Plan: Continue RF Conditioning of all antennas. We will start with
single null shot like 1020731019. The goal is to get J-port conditioned
up to useable power, and continue conditioning of D- and E-port.

Results:
--------

RF Group re-worked the J-port phase control to allow faster locking, and
slowed down the retry circuit to allow phase to lock before raising the power.

We did 10min of ecdc before the first shot, since there had been J-port
conditioning in the morning. First shot was taken at ~9:30AM.

Good progress was made on Jport. The phase control and retry circuit
modifications were successful in allowing multiple retries after faults. We
discovered (thanks to Earl) that the phase control was being set to make it
0-0 instead of 0-pi. This was confirmed by lowering the tf to 4.5T and
observing that J still did not heat at the 1.6MW power level. When the phase
was changed (to "0", which is apparently really pi) J started producing
H-modes, like D+E. J was conditioned up to about 1.6MW with pulse lengths of
200msec in l-mode, but once we started getting H-modes the pulse lengths were
shorter. Attempts to run J simultaneously with D&E on shots 26-28 were not
successful. D managed to stay on through H-mode at the 1.2MW level or so, but E
tended to fault on transitions. I suggest that for the next round of
conditioning we go back to limiter discharges to stay in L-mode.

I did a lot of playing with the startup, but without much progress. The most
robust startups had early bounces, and also led to early hard xrays from
non-thermals. Attempts to increase the pre-puff and/or increase Bz (by ef4 or
by rcur offset) resulted in duds or fizzles, and also late breakdowns. For
shot 10 Jim raised the sparker voltage to ~14kV, but while this eventually led
to some shots on which the sparker responded to the gas, it did not eliminate
the duds. On shot #14 I introduced argon into the pre-puff, and left it there
for the remainder of the run. There was only one dud after that, on shot 19,
before which I had made change to rcur offset to try to remedy a late
breakdown, and ended up with much too positive a Bz. With the argon there were
some successful plasmas with amazingly late breakdowns (like 11msec). The best
correlation on breakdown time was Bz, more postive making it later, more
negative earlier; I ended up with IC_EF4 at -1330 to get the breakdown time
back to 5.5-6.0 msec. These seemed to be robust and reproducible, but with
bounces at ~13msec and early runaways. Earlier attempts to remedy this
behavior by raising the puff had led to fizzles, so for the final hour or so I
left it alone.

The H/D ratio was fairly high all day, ~10-15%, and seemed to rise during the
RF. J-port continued to spew injections, and caused numerous disruptions in
the morning. As the day went on these seemed to decrease, and the last 13
plasmas lasted well into rampdown (many were terminated by Earl's Li pellets).

We experienced several data system hangs late in the day. A number of these were
apparently related to unix_submit jobs on unity and cmodws04. The actual analyses
on the linux boxes ran successfully, but somehow the dispatch server did not think
the launch had been completed. Also, on shot 28 the dispatch server suicided with
a bugcheck error, causing IGOR to get a recool ready bit, although many stores had
not been done. The store and analysis phases were successfully re-run manually, as
had been done earlier this week.

I wasn't too happy with the startups on 0731; Ian was making lots of

before 10msec. The result seems to be a tendency to lower Bz and
bouncers/hard xray startups. I may want to do some fiddling with this,
but I'll start from the setup as on 19:
