Summary:

We started plasma shots from shot 6 after the magnetic checkout.
D and E were able to run 1.4 MW each for 300 ms.
J was struggling. We think that an old demodulator in the power side
was producing fake arc signals because the demodulator gave a too low forward
power. But we did not have chance to check this idea because the last
shot was a dud.
For J, we have a 15 ms pedestal when starting retry in order for the phase
feedback loop to kick in. The modification was successful.

Physics operator summary for run 1020806 (Tuesday):

Summary: We spent the morning tracking down a few problems with the new
magnetics CPCI installation. These were eventually found to be
due to a bad ribbon cable and to two shorts in the new patch
panel. Once we started plasma operation, the machine ran well.
So did the D and E RF systems, with up to 2.7 MW into plasma. J
did not perform well. H/D was rather high (10+ %), but the RF
guys didn't care. The ECE roughing pump failed today, leaving us
with no GPC data. A 13.8 kV breaker pulled open for some reason
between shots, which caused the alternator to slow down to 1000
rpm, resulting in a significant delay early in the afternoon. A fire
alarm late in the afternoon and the subsequent evacuation of the
building resulted in further delays.

Engineering setup for Tuesday 06 Aug 2002

ECDC in the morning, if possible, stopping by 07:00.
Set up for possible ECDC in D2 between shots.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

We need to test the magnetics system, which underwent a massive reconfiguration
to incorporate the new compact PCI-based data acquisition and finally retire
the troublesome Traq digitizers.

Set up power systems for a standard OH test, such as 1020702003, in order to
check out the magnetics and hybrid signals. There were literally hundreds of
signal cables changed in the magnetics racks yesterday, many data acquisition
modules changed or removed or added, and hundreds of corresponding changes
that had to be made in the magnetics tree. So one test shot should be enough.

For the beginning of plasma operation, set up power systems as on 1020731010,
which was a limited plasma (for the RF...no H-modes)

Note:
The RF will be firing into vacuum before the run begins, so we will want to
do 10 minutes of ECDC just before the first plasma shot. If the H/D begins
to rise during the run, we will want to do between-shot ECDC as well.

Gas setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC)
fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
leave J-Bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG5)

Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, DNB

Run Plan:

Work on D, E, and J systems into plasma.

Start by loading segment 2 from 1020731010 (limiter plasma)and let the RF
go at it. We may switch to a diverted shot later in the day (use segment 2
from 1020802021)

Note:
The RF will be firing into vacuum before the run begins, so we will want to
do 10 minutes of ECDC just before the first plasma shot. If the H/D begins
to rise during the run, we will want to do between-shot ECDC as well.

One hour of ECDC in D2 was done this morning (after an entire weekend
of ECDC).

Hybrid coldstart done; no errors found

Loaded PCS segment 1 from shot 1020802021 (recent startup) and
segment 2 from shot 1020731010 (limited plasma).

Do 10 minutes of ECDC prior to the first shot, since the RF was firing
into vacuum prior to the run.

Shot 01 -- Test of MDS shot cycle. No power. All the magnetics data
acquisition worked.

Shot 02 -- Test. OH test under PLC control to check magnetics status. A
handful of magnetics signals have problems. It's being worked on.

Shot 03 -- Test. OH test under PLC control to check magnetics status. Still
some magnetics problems

Shot 04 -- Test. OH test under PLC control to check magnetics status. Most
of the magnetics problems have been fixed. But there's no hint
of a signal on the Ip rogowski.

Shot 05 -- Test. OH test under PLC control to check magnetics status. It
looks like all necessary signals are working, although Btor has
not been exercised by these OH tests.

Next shot: go for plasma.

ECDC for 10 minutes is being done before the next shot.

Shot 06 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.22 s, due to an injection from J-antenna.

Next shot: turn on segment 2 (limited), not segment 3 ! (physop
error).

Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good full-length shot. Limiter discharge. Ip=0.76 MA,
Btor=5.3 T, nl_04=1e20 m-2. Prf=1 MW from E, short blips from D
and J. Z-meter is out-to-lunch. Jim Irby is looking at it.
EFIT ran with no problems, and reported no magnetics outliers.
The pre-fill pressure and the Bz0 at breakdown are very different
than previous days. We think the ratiomatic may need to be
recalibrated. But could the difference in Bz0 be due to the new
magnetics?

Next shot: no changes.

Now having power room access for RF guys.

13.8 kV breaker has suddenly opened. The alternator is slowing down. This
might delay the run some.

Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Limited. Disrupted during rampdown. Density
was higher than programmed, maybe due to the helium puffing from
the NINJA system starting at t=0.5 s. Prf_D=1 MW, Prf_E=1 MW
(both very constant), Prf_J= ~0.5 MW, but not steady.

Next shot: repeat, with the NINJA delayed until t=1.2 s.

Shot 09 -- Fizzle. The startup was getting rather ragged.

Next shot: increase IC_EF4U by 15 amps

Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Brian changed the ratiomatic calibration
again, but I think it's now too high. Bz0 is really high, but
the machine seems to like it for startup. Prf=2.4 MW (D+E).
J is having its difficulties. H/D is up to 10%.

Next shot: no PCS changes.

Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. ECE roughing pump failed earlier today, so
we haven't had GPC Te for the afternoon. Prf=2.5 MW D+E. Wimpy
bursts from J. H/D=11%

Next shot: no PCS changes.

ECDC being done now between shots.

Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Still running a limiter configuration to avoid
H-modes for the RF. Prf=2.5 MW D+E. J gave about 0.5+ MW.
H/D dropped to 0.8% after the between-shot ECDC.

Next shot: no PCS changes. No between-shot ECDC.

Fire alarm! Evacuate building. This could end the run.

Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.65 MW D+E. J is just piddling along.

Next shot: no PCS changes. No between-shot ECDC.

Shot 14 -- Dud. Bz0 too high?
