Run Summary for 1020809 - MP#311 "Spatial Dependence of Edge Turbulence Statistics"

Session Leader: B. LaBombard
Physics Operator: I. Hutchinson

MP Objectives:
The primary purpose of these experiments is to explore the
radial and poloidal variation in the statistics of edge plasma
fluctuations. In particular, plasma fluctuations will be
recorded in the `near' and `far SOL' locations and on the
high and low-field sides of the torus in a series of
ohmic L-mode discharges. The experiments are also designed
to accomplish a number of secondary goals in a `piggy-back'
mode: compare the SOL density, Te, and parallel flow profiles on
the high-field and low-field sides, and to explore the influence
(if any) of the new inner divertor configuration on the conditions
in the SOL and divertor.

Shot Plan:
All shots: Ip=0.8 MA, Bt=5.3 tesla, lower x-point equilibrium.
Inner and outer gaps at 1.5 cm. (inner gap will
be tweaked for ISP operation)

Set up discharge and probe targeting
1,2,3 NL04 = 1.0
Run ASP in fixed position mode, increasing its insertion depth in each shot
and determining its maximum insertion depth that avoids overheating. We need
to get ASP into 'Near' SOL. This is range where 40 < Te < 50 eV.
Get inner/outer diodes and camera systems optimized.
Run ISP, determining coil pulse-length for optimized probe insertion depth
(deepest without damage).
Operate outer divertor probes in fluctuation mode and check strike-point and
rho-mappings.

Do Density Scan with Successive Probe Setups:
Setup: "Scan" - ASP & FSP Scanning three times (swept E/W, floating N/S probes)
ISP in swept voltage mode. Divertor probes in swept voltage mode.
Divertor probes in sweep mode.
Setup: "Far" - ASP in fixed position mode, rho=7 mm,
with continuous Isat mode on E/W and Vf mode on N/S probes.
FSP scanning three times (swept E/W, floating N/S probes)
ISP in Isat mode.
Subset of divertor probes in fluctuation mode.
Setup: "Near" - ASP in fixed position mode, rho=2 mm (40 < Te < 50 eV),
with continuous Isat mode on E/W and Vf mode on N/S probes.
FSP scanning three times (swept E/W, floating N/S probes)
ISP in Vf mode.
Subset of divertor probes in fluctuation mode.
4,5,6 NL04 = 1.0
7,8,9 NL04 = 0.9
10,11,12 NL04 = 0.8
13,14,15 NL04 = 0.7
16,17,18 NL04 = 0.6
19,20,21 NL04 = 1.1
22,23,24 NL04 = 1.2
25,26,27 NL04 = 1.4

Results:
After a bit of fiddling around with probe timing, gaps,
and probe insertion depths (plus an occasional fizzle/dud),
we managed to get going on the density scan part of the plan on
shot 15. As expected, running the ASP in a fixed-position mode near the
separatrix was a tricky setup. In determining the maximum 'safe'
insertion depth for the ASP, we managed to disrupt the plasma three
times. This lead to the NORTH probe being shorted to the probe head.
Unfortunately, this means that there will be no way to get
poloidal fluctuation phase velocity measurements or fluctuation-
induced fluxes from today's ASP data. But, having paid this price, we
now know that it is possible to set the ASP to dwell 2 mm outside the
separatrix (as defined by EFIT on these shots). We will attempt to repair
the ASP head on monday. (Probe will be off-line for a week
or so.)
As a result of the slow startup, we were not able to complete the
density scan. Only 3 shots were taken above NL04=1.0. And, owing to
triggering errors (some being the fault of bugs in some setup programs
written by the session leader), camac errors, and impurity injections
(some resulting from probe arcing), critical long-time data samples
taken by the ASP were corrupted. I think it is worth begging for more
run time, particularly since the ISP works so well (see below) and we
now know it is possible to set up the ASP to gather long-time fluctuation
data in the Near and Far SOL with ALL probe tips operating (yielding flux and
phase data).
We got some impressive data on the ISP today (hats-off to CSP).
The probe was scanned to the separatrix fairly regularly at three times.
On shot 7 we over-inserted the probe, leading to 3 very bright impurity plumes
seen on the WIDE1 camera (this was entertainment for a large audience in the control
room). Apart from shot 7, the ISP did not perturb the plasma and demonstrated
that it can be programmed to hit the EFIT-defined separatrix without
any problems. We did not attempt to sweep the probe through 90 degrees.
This will require more careful planning/modeling of the voltage programming.
We kept the probe angle under 70 degrees. As a result, no data on parallel flows
where recorded by the ISP today. Swept I-V characteristics from the ISP look very
interesting; the fluctuation levels are clearly lower there. The cross-field profiles
look remarkably flat after penetrating through a very short scrape-off
layer (~2mm). Either EFIT is getting the separatrix wrong or there is something
interesting going on with the profiles. A careful analysis is required, looking
at flux surface mapping, etc. But, before we can do serious
analysis, we will need to modify the Langmuir probe fitting code and
edge database to handle data from the ISP (leading to n, Te, vf profiles).
We also learned that the ISP did not like to run in continuous Isat mode
(intermittent arcing), but this is a typical problem for probes in C-Mod.

Note on ASP targeting info for future reference:
Example of optimum ASP targeting (using SP_PREDICT)
EFIT-defined separatrix target = 10 mm
"scan" mode - set target position to 12 mm -> leads to ASP scanning 2 mm inside sep.
"Near" mode - set target position to 15 mm -> leads to ASP dwelling 2 mm outside sep.
"Far" mode - set target position to 10 mm -> leads to ASP dwelling 7 mm outside sep.

Summary
_______

Lots of good probe data was obtained. The inner-wall probe worked well.
All SN 0.8MA pretty standard equilibrium.
Many tweaks were applied to startup and the first
.3s. The startup did not in the end seem to be any more reliable, though
several of the failures were power supplies. The ramp-up and early
plasma is now somewhat more elongated, and it reaches diversion somewhat
earlier.

Aug 9 2002 08:47:22:720AMBrian Labombard Run Plan for 1020809 - MP#311 "Spatial Dependence of Edge Turbulence Statistics"

All shots: Ip=0.8 MA, Bt=5.3 tesla, lower x-point equilibrium.
Inner and outer gaps at 1.5 cm. (inner gap will
be tweaked for ISP operation)

Shot

Density Scan with Successive Probe Setups:
Setup: "Scan" - ASP & FSP Scanning three times (swept E/W, floating N/S probes)
ISP in swept voltage mode. Divertor probes in swept voltage mode.
Divertor probes in sweep mode.
Setup: "Far" - ASP in fixed position mode, rho=7 mm,
with continuous Isat mode on E/W and Vf mode on N/S probes.
FSP scanning three times (swept E/W, floating N/S probes)
ISP in Isat mode.
Subset of divertor probes in fluctuation mode.
Setup: "Near" - ASP in fixed position mode, rho=2 mm (40 < Te < 50 eV),
with continuous Isat mode on E/W and Vf mode on N/S probes.
FSP scanning three times (swept E/W, floating N/S probes)
ISP in Vf mode.
Subset of divertor probes in fluctuation mode.
