fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC)

Summary:

The J-port antenna conditioned to record maximum voltage (~35 kV) with
solid heating and negligible impurity or density generation. In the
past, J-port has coupled 3.0 MW for ~25 msec (1010727028) with maximum
voltage of 24 kV. Previous peak maximum voltage was 30 kV. This is
the first time the J-port antenna has operated into plasma at voltages
similar to those obtained during vacuum conditioning (~36 kV). The
antenna needs further conditioning to operate reliably at higher power
and voltages. The plasmas began as inner wall limited until J-port
reached ~2.5 MW and then we switched plasma operation to lower single
null discharges. These plasmas were typically characterized by
multiple Elm-free H-modes surviving ~200 msec. As a result of the
Elm-free H-modes, the loading was fairly light but both E and J
conditioned and operated fairly well into H-mode.

Continued RF Conditioning

RUN SUMMARY

The run began late due to leftover problems from the power outage the
day before, as well as continued maintenance on the OH2 Capacitor bank.
This necessitated a number of test shots at the beginning of the run, and shot
6 was the first plasma shot. Shots 6-14 were limiter shots used to condition
the J-port antenna. This proved successful, with J-port power reaching
about 2.5 MW, although intermittent. Transmitter 1 was not operational and
transmitter 2 was operated during the day at a power level of ~ 1 MW.

Beginning with shot 15, the plasmas were diverted and RF conditioning continued.
Again, the conditioning seemed successful, with the J-port power reaching about
2.5 MW, although intermittent as in the case of the limiter discharges. The
plasma followed the bursts of RF power with intermittent entry into H-mode.

These conditioning shots continued through shot 30, the last shot of the run.

All in all, a pretty good day with 30 shots, of which 7 were tests (with one
due to operator error), one disruption, one fizzle and 21 useful conditioning
shots.

The improvement in cooling (machine, cell, but also the control room -- T=98
today, a record!) is very noticeable and welcome!

had failed on the last shot on 13 August. TF crowbar circuit was also checked
to ensure that it will fire in the event of a global power failure, as also
happened on 13 August (Weather is very hot and humid!)

First few "shots" will test the OH2 commutation bank.

First test shot revealed a residual problem with data system.

It appears that the exciter voltage program pulled the exciter voltage
negative too soon. Indications are that the excitor waveform amy have triggered too early.
