| This run is a contnuation of 1020801, MP #312. This MP has been put together with MP #299. The idea was to get Ohmic h-modes (and perhaps ohmic ITBs) and then then control the the density peaking with ICRF. WE had hoped to get decent Ohmic h-modes to measure rotation in plasmas free of external momentum sources. More work will need to be done on both MP #299 and MP #312. A few interesting observations have been made in the rotation on the K port spectrometer, more will be said about this at a later time. In short the run was only marginally successful. | Physics Operator Summary for Thursday, Aug 15, 2002 Run Plan and Engineering Setup ------------------------------- Boronization Recovery, followed by MP#312 Rotation in Ohmic H-modes and perhaps MP#299 ICRF into Ohmic H-mode ITB SL: Lee, Fiore PO: Wolfe EO: Byford, Engineering Setup Power Systems as on 1020801026 Run to begin at 9:00 AM ******** Overnight Boronization ************ ECDC from 06:00-07:00 at 2e-4 T D2. Gas setup: B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid Enabled (PG1) B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC) C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3) J-Bottom as is, Hybrid DISABLED Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE,VUV,DNB RF Setup: Transmitters #2,3,4 in run-on by 7:00 Run Plan: Start with ten minutes of ECDC in D2 following RF conditioning. Begin with a "standard" 4.6T SN shot, e.g. 1020814020 to check boronization. RF can fire if they want. Try to get a full length shot, but don't waste a lot of run time at it. Begin trying for ohmic h-modes. Start with a shot like 1020801026, but ramping Bt back up only to 4.6 T. RF should try firing after 0.9 sec, when Bt=4.6 Depending on results, consider dropping Ip to 800kA, and perhaps going to lower Bt, such as on 1000915009, to try to improve the H-mode duration and look for ITB formation. Again, ramp back up only to 4.6T. Short Summary: -------------- Boronization succeeded. The RF re-conditioning went very well, and J and E are ready for physics experiments; over 4MW total from J+E today, including nearly 3MW from J. Good EDA H-modes were readily obtained at 4.6T with J and E. The ohmic H-mode experiment got a bit more data, but we still don't have good, long-lasting ohmic H-modes. This effort will continue tomorrow, under the auspices of MP#299. Details -------- We boronized the machine Tuesday night: 140 PSI or approx 2048 A. ECDC was run at 2e-4 Torr for one hour following the boronization. Andy reports that the PLC pulser did not work properly, and he had to set the on/off times at 0.8/.4 s to get the discharge to stay on. It was still going off completely during the OFF interval. RF Conditioned into vacuum in the morning, getting up to 35kV on J and 40kV on E. We took 10minutes of additional ECDC before the first shot. The boronization recovery went quite well, despite a number of disruptions and fizzles. Shot #2 was a full length standard lower single null discharge with some RF;following that we began the main program: ohmic H-modes. RF fired after 0.9sec, with the field back at 4.6T. The 1.05MA shot we started from seemed very prone to disruptions, so we backed off to 900kA. This produced reliable but not very long-lived ohmic h-modes. The first shot in this series was #7. RF firing at 0.9sec gave very nice EDA h-modes. Both E and J cleaned up rapidly, much better than after the first boronization. By the end of the day, J got up to 2.9-3.0MW, apparently limited by the Uptegraff current limit! The antenna voltage problem which had previously limited J-port antenna seemed absent. The RF h-modes looked like good EDA's. EFIT stored energy was up to about 140kJ and beta_N to 1.5. Unfortunately, the ohmic H-modes were not EDA, and we were unable to keep them from terminating early. Davis may have gotten some additional statistics on the rotation profiles, but these were not optimum and the shots were not suitable for MP#299, as the ohmic H phase did not last long enough for much density peaking to occur, and did not last into the start of the RF. In an effort to increase the EDA-ness of the ohmic H-modes, we increased the minimum in the tf ramp to 105kA, at shot #11. Increasing the triangularity on shot#13 did not help, may have hurt. Raising the target density on shot #14 did not help. Neither did decreasing the argon on 15 and again on #15-18, although it may have improved the RF phase. Since it did decrease the SNR of the rotation measurement, the Ar was restored on shot#19. On shot #21 I raised the current from 900 to 950, to try to get more out of the ohmic H-mode, and got an early disruption with injections apparently coming from the divertor region. I then adjusted the equilibrium to try to put the strike point on the outer divertor, rather than in the slot. Shots #22 and 25 had good strike point location, but no ohmic H-mode at all, despite higher current. Even dropping the tf on shot #26 did not recover the ohmic h-mode. After that, we went back to a reload of shot 15, the 900kA case, for the remainder of the run. Engineering operation of the machine was excellent today, with no shots lost to power system or gas faults. OH1 crowbarred following a disruption on shot#21, but no fuses were lost. Cooling was again excellent, allowing 31 machine cycles despite a slightly late start and a number of cell entries. The data system operation was more problematic, with the dispatch server needing to be aborted a number of times early in the run, although this was mostly handled in a manner that was invisible to the observer. The event server died at least once. One shot (#12) did not exist because of a failed INIT, apparently because THSTIX was rebooting. The interferometer feedback failed several times, causing a few disruptions and over-gassed shots. There was a no-RF injection from the J-antenna, near the septum, on the first shot that resulted in a disruption (actually a mercy killing as the tci feedback was on the way to gassing it to death anyway). That seemed to be the only serious injection from J. There were a number of injections from various locations on the inner limiter and from either the floor or outer limiter, most visible from the F-port (wide2) view. See the logbook for frame numbers of many of these. Scorecard: ---------- No Power Cycles 1 Fizzles 7 Plasmas 23 (7 disruptions) ============ == Shots 31 |

| Aug 15 2002 03:00:59:210PM | 1020815023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: Move Ip gain step to 0.5 from 0.65 zxu from .03 to .02, zxl down .005 fizzle. MOved in and down. late breakdown next shot: br0 from .0017 to .002 ef4 from -1320 to -1325 |
| Aug 15 2002 03:12:21:420PM | 1020815024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: Move Ip gain step to 0.5 from 0.65 zxu from .03 to .02, zxl down .005 br0 from .0017 to .002 ef4 from -1320 to -1325 fizzle again. breakdown at 6.3msec, runs outside, didn't catch it next shot: raise pg4 again |
| Aug 15 2002 03:29:58:610PM | 1020815025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: Move Ip gain step to 0.5 from 0.65 zxu from .03 to .02, zxl down .005 br0 from .0017 to .002 ef4 from -1320 to -1325 pg4 to 38msed No ohmic H-mode. NIce eda with the RF (J only). Some early hards, another bouncer. |
| Aug 15 2002 03:42:48:463PM | 1020815026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Reduce minimum tf to 90kA plasma, full length, still no ohmic H-mode. It looks like it's dithering. reload seg3 from 15 |
| Aug 15 2002 03:59:38:277PM | 1020815027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: reload seg3 from 15 plasma, tci feedback went berserk. No clue what the density was. Gas was full on from .37 to .72sec breakdown slightly late 7.8msec no ohmic h-mode. next shot: repeat (hopefully with tci) |
| Aug 15 2002 04:08:25:980PM | 1020815028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: reload seg3 from 15 repeat (hopefully with tci) fizzle. very low current, bd time is back to normal. It hits somewhere at 13msec, but I'm not sure where. It is moving out, but the I/Bz is low. Reduce pg4 by 2ms |
| Aug 15 2002 04:27:06:987PM | 1020815029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29:Reduce pg4 by 2ms to 36 plasma, 2ohmic hmodes, rf at 4MW, but faulting. tci has a fringe jump at .775sec; feedback also otl Some early hards, it bounced and recovered. |
| Aug 15 2002 04:46:40:743PM | 1020815030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: repeat after Irby tries again to fix tci plasma, 2 ohmic h-modes, 1RF h-mode (eda) tci seems good. J faults at 1.06, and runs a series of short retries. next shot: repeat. |
| Aug 15 2002 04:56:53:387PM | 1020815031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31: repeat. fizzle! Oh well, tomorrow's another day (and it's Jim's turn) |
