There were no ITB discharges in this run, and the H-modes were of
poor quality, presumably due to high radiated power, presumably
due to molybdenum. As such, no progress was made on MP301*.

Summary
_______

A difficult day of trying to get decent 4.5T ITBs without success. We
showed that the radiation is too great. According to Rice it is mostly
molybdenum. We showed that Ar at 40ms puff is enough even in these
quite dirty plasmas to increase the radiation by 30 or 40%. Argon 30ms
is more reasonable, and actually shot 27 which had 30ms is one of the
best at 5.3T. In order to test the machine condition, we went back up
to 5.3T and were able to get EDA plasmas, but the confinement was
rather bad, H-factors of order 1. This means that either the effective
power is a lot lower than we think, or there is very poor confinement.
Shot 28 claims to have 2.9MW out of D and E combined. The plasma looks
more as if it has about half of that.


Rather a lot of fizzles were experienced. The field evolution was
subject to drifts in level and shape that took quite a lot of tweaks
to fix. There were no outside bounces till shot 27; so that probably
means I was running with Bz too high. The interferometer was barely
working all day, and wasted several shots. We thus went to
preprogrammed gas from shot 11 on. Despite zero gain, there seemed to
be some feed-though from big nl04 excursions, so the controller was
also zeroed.

Loaded a shot for beam into gas after shot 28. Don't use those for plasmas.

Recommendation
______________

We need to investigate why the plasma performance is apparently so bad.
Is it poor absorption, high radiation, or bad confinement? Boronization
might help, but we ought to see what the cause is anyway.

but MKS gauges are reading .45 and .48mTorr. This is consistent with the
observation that the ratiomatic is reading low at startup. The shot from 1020627
did in fact read 0.6mTorr; the plenum pressure may be lower?
