The antennas had difficulty operating with one another because of the increased cross talk between antennas due to single pass poor absorption. D and E-port antennas operated up to 1.6 MW into L-mode plasmas. J-port was hampered by the high cross coupled power from D and E-port and reached only 1.4 MW. The H-mode on 007 was encouraging but the only one of the day. On the last few shots 024, 026, and 028, direct electron heating was observed on the central channels. Using cold plasma dispersion relation and measured H/D ratio, the heating is consistent with mode conversion heating. This is the first clear indication of D(H) mode conversion on C-Mod. An interesting disruption was observed with the wide1 and wide2 cameras on shot 018. A projectile was launched from the A-port divertor region, bounced off the inner wall, disrupted the plasma, and landed in the neighborhood of the D-port divertor area. |

| Physics Operator Summary for Wednesday, 1020911 RF Conditioning and Machine Cleanup SL: Wukitch/Lin PO: Wolfe Engineering Setup: Power Systems as on 1020903001 Overnight ECDC in D2 at 2e-4 torr (not 2e-5 as I had said in the bulletin) Run to begin at 9:00 AM Gas setup: B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid Enabled (PG1) B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC) C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3) J-Bottom as is, Hybrid DISABLED Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE,VUV,DNB RF Setup: Transmitters #1,2,3,4 in run-on by 7:00 Run Plan: Start with ten minutes of ECDC in D2 following RF conditioning Begin with a "standard" 5.3T, 1MA SN target shot, e.g. 1020903004 (actually, that's probably 5.1T, which is even better). Do RF conditioning and monitor ohmic performance, H/D, Prad to assess clean-up. Results: I tweaked up the current waveform and gain times from the starting seg2 shot, 1020903004 and copied in a pg3 waveform. I also cut back the Argon pulse a little, just for luck. It was rough going in the morning, with very erratic startups, including duds and fizzles. The plasmas that went were disrupting in early rampdown, mostly with vertical instabilities, some with injections. Reducing elongation (clearin) fixed the vertical problems. We ran ecdc after disruptive shots, which may or may not have helped. The pumpdown after plasmas and after ecdc was very slow. Things got better after shot 9 or so. The RF group got D&E operating up to about 1.6MW each, running separately. Since the H/D never got below about .17 at 0.5 sec, and rose to .38 or so during the RF pulse, the damping was poor and the cross-talk between the two was causing faulting. This was also true for J, which ended up only going up to about 1.3MW today. Obviously at these H/D the heating efficiency was poor, but we did get h-modes on shot 7, and a very brief one on 13. On shots 18-22 we did TF rampdowns starting at 1.1sec to determine the field setting at which the 80MHz (E) had the largest sawteeth. This turned out to be -145000A, nominally 5.15T (vacuum). The rest of the run was carried out at this field. According to Amanda, the GPC indicated that the actual field was 5.25T on axis at this field, which is consistent with the 80MHz proton resonance. Evidence continues to point to the Btor signal being low by at least 1%. Integrator calibrations are underway as I write this. At these high H/D ratios there is a significant mode conversion damping on the high field side of the minority resonance. At this field the MC layer for the 70MHz was on axis and the ECE indicated very localized electron heating. This is a nice physics result. There were several duds later in the day, and the cure seemed to be 5 miuntes of ecdc. I suspect this was related to the fact that J started putting in significant power on the preceeding shots. Breakdown times on the shots that went were all over the place, from 5.5msec to 9msec. The fields could probably still use some tweaking. IGT pressure on going into init was typically around 3-4e-6, after good shots or after ecdc. That seemed to have something to do with the late breakdown times. On shots with a long delay from the previous shot and no ecdc the breakdown times were earlier. Several shots, particularly later in the day, had disruptions in early rampdown, like 1.6 sec, for no obvious reason. At shot 24 I made a number of changes to the rampdown waveforms (clearin, rcur, and nl04) which seemed to avoid the disruption. However on the last shot 28 the disruption happened again, at almost exactly the same time. On the good side of the startup problem, we had no instances of runaways today. I think the increased Bz from yesterday is probably responsible, since we ran at very low pre-puff (20msec) without bouncers or hards. The TCI feedback had a problem on shot #3, and I went to pre-programmed gas for shots 7-9. Shot 9 gave much lower density than 7 with the same gas puff, possibly indicating the walls were cleaning up. Anyway, from shot#10 on the tci feedback was back on, with gain=8.0. Shot #14 was a power supply dud. Both oh2 supplies failed to fire; possible camac problem, not explained. There was a disruption at crossover on shot 18, caused by an injection (UFO) which is clearly seen on the wide1 video; this caused the PF breaker to pull. No fuses were lost. Scorecard: ---------- 28 shots. 17 plasmas. 5 fizzles. 6 duds. |
