| The object of this run is to obtain Ohmic H-mode ITBs as targets for central ICRF heating. In support of MP#299 ITB - RF into Ohmic H-mode and MP#312 Ohmic H-mode rotation profiles we will egin by trying to estabilsh Ohmic H-mode plasmas which transition to ITB. Once these are successfully established, small amounts of ICRF from J-port antenna will be added during the toroidal field flat top. Reproducible shots are desirable to make progress on MP#312. There was difficulty getting the desired EDA H-mode for much of the run, but Steve found the trick by raising the triangularity to what had been used on the 1000915 run. We were able to consistently obtain ITBs on and after shot 24. We found that the density peaking was not arrested until the central rf power reached 400 kw and was solidly arrested at 600 kw. Neither 200 kW nor 300 kw rf stopped the central density increase. The solid result here was worth the wait. Shot summary: 1020926001 Three H-modes, none sustained for very long. The last one died just after the toroidal field flat top. Try to change density to encourage sustained H-mode. No obvious sign of density peaking. 1020926002 H-mode, but not as strong as shot 1. No apparent peaking. 1020926003 Short H-mode with no recovery. Target density may be too high. ITB unlikely. 1020926004 Many H-modes, many ENs at drop out. Nothing sustained long enough to form an ITB. 1020926005 Two H-modes, the second quite late. No obvious ITB. 1020926006 No H-mode, No ITB at this low of a density. 1020926007 One H-mode, not sustained. Unlikely to have formed an ITB 1020926008 One H-mode, lasting somewhat longer than the previous shot. No ITB. 1020926009 Dud. Likely a problem with the DNB vacuum. 1020926010 Went into H-mode, then disrupted. No ITB. 1020926011 H-mode late, density starts peaking late just before H-mode ends. 1020926012 H-mode late, very similar to 11. The density starts (just a little ) peaking late just before H-mode ends. 1020926013 H-mode late. There is slight peaking on the density starts late just before H-mode ends. We will try to get it into H-mode earlier. 1020926014 No H-mode 1020926015 No H-mode except in ramp down. 1020926016 H-mode, but ended before 200 kW rf pulse. Likely density peaking. 1020926017 H-mode, but tripped out when the rf came on then went back into H-mode. 1020926018 H-mode, but tripped out when the rf came on. 1020926019 No plasma. No power. 1020926020 No plasma. No power. 1020926021 No plasma. No TF. 1020926022 Fizzle. 1020926023 Ohmic H- mode starts, density starts to peak up, H-mode cuts off 80 ms after rf starts, then comes back on. 1020926024 Good Ohmic H- mode, probable density peaking. H-mode is blown away when the rf comes on and does not restart. 1020926025 Good Ohmic H- mode, started later than previous shot and ended about the same time. Density peaking not apparent. 1020926026 Best Ohmic H-mode yet. Definite density peaking and ITB. Shuts off with rf but is probably coincidental. 1020926027 Good Ohmic H-mode . Definite density peaking and ITB. Shuts off with rf but is probably coincidental 1020926028 Elm-free H-mode, ends early. H mode restrikes later during rf pulse. Density was probably peaking before it fell out of H-mode. 1020926029 Elm-free H-mode started earlier, but still ended earlier . H mode restrikes later during rf pulse. Density was peaking during the first H-mode. 1020926030 Great H-mode lasting .5 s, up until the shot ended in a disruption. Density was definitely peaking and continued to peak with the rf power. 1020926031 Great H-mode lasting .5 s, up until the shot ended in a disruption.Density was definitely peaking but seems to have clamped with the rf power. 1020926032 CAMAC data was not obtained. Non Camac data made it look like the ITB was arrested with 600 kW rf. 1020926033 H mode ended too early, before rf pulse. 1020926034 Good Ohmic H-mode, with density peaking. 300 kW rf did not arrest the density. 1020926035 Good Ohmic H-mode, with density peaking. 600 kW rf solidly arrested the density rise, but heated the plasma at the same time. |

| Physop Summary for Thursday, Sept 26, 2002 MP#299 ITB - RF into Ohmic H-mode and/or MP#312 Ohmic H-mode rotation profiles SL: Fiore (and/or Lee) PO: Wolfe EO: Cochran,Byford,Parkin (the Bills) Engineering Setup: ------------------- Power Systems as on 1020816018 Overnight ECDC in D2 at 2e-4 torr off by 7:00AM Run to begin at 9:00 AM Gas setup: B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid Enabled (PG1) B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC) C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3) J-Bottom as is, Hybrid DISABLED Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE,VUV,DNB RF Setup: #3,4 in Run On by 7:00AM Run Plan: -------- Start from 1020816018 (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) Try to get ohmic H-modes which exhibit density peaking (aka ITB). While we're trying, Davis can be taking rotation data. If we get ITB formation, inject RF at 70MHz (J-port antenna), starting at 200kW level and increasing the power until degradation of the ITB is evident. Result: ------- Ohmic H-modes were easily obtained, but we spent most of the day trying to get them to be EDA long enough to start peaking. The H-modes we were getting were solidly Elm-free and radiated themselves to death long before we got back up to the 4.6T field where the RF would be on-axis. We finally got it on shot #26. What I did was to copy the RXL,ZXL,RXU, and ZXU waveforms from shot 1000915001, one of Catherine's old good shots. The effect of this was to delay the H-mode until ~0.9 sec, shortly before the tf started ramping up and into a higher upper triangularity discharge, resulting in EDA behavior. These shots were very close to going into H-mode early, around .6 sec, and when they did (shots #28,29) they were again ELM-free and did not last until the RF time. I believe that if I had adjusted RXU to make the triangularity higher at the early time these early onset cases might have become EDA, although it might have been necessary to start the rampup sooner to get the q up as well. If this works it would possibly be a better way to run these discharges, since we were wasting a lot of the flattop time waiting for the late L-H transitions. Once we reproduced the effect, we were successful in obtaining the results with RF fired into the peaking H-modes. The threshold for arresting the peaking under these conditions is between 300 and 400kW, with very strong clamping of the density at 600kW. At the 600kW level the central electron temperature started to increase with nearly constant central density (TS data), and Wmhd did increase. The main goals of MP#299 were pretty much met. Unfortunately, while we were trying to get rid of the highly radiating ELM-free cases we ended up turning off the Argon pulse (it really did seem to be making things worse in terms of the radiation). We turned it back on for shot 28, which went ELM-free again, so we left it off in the interest of completing the main goal of the MP. It would be good to have gotten the rotation profiles in these cases, and it may be worth it to run some of these shots again with the argon back on for this purpose. As for MP#312 on ohmic H-mode rotation profiles, not much new was accomplished. We increased the TF ramp rate (both up-sweeps and down-sweeps) today, with no recurrence of the alarming noises in the alternator. The new microphones showed no effects of these sweeps and the alternator personnel reported all quiet. Rampdown rates (as drawn) of 340kA/sec, resulting in actual ramps of 90kA/sec, and ramp-up rates of 150kA/sec (400kA/sec drawn) seemed not to cause any problems (e.g. 1020926015). Irby should revisit this issue. Current rise was quite fast. I tweaked the Ip waveform a couple of times at 0.1 and 0.2 sec to get the demand up as high as the actual current. We were getting over 650kA at 0.1sec today, and the drawn waveform started out at 450kA, resulting in a thrash as the feedback tried to bring the current back down. Startup was very reliable, with only a few gas tweaks all day. There was one "fizzle", on shot #22, after a long series of no power shots and a no-TF dud. Actually, Ian's routine would count this a plasma, since it made it to over 80kA before it gave up. Raising the fill got the real plasma back. There was one other dud, on shot 9, which was due to a leak in the DNB which caused the pressure at t=0 to go up to >0.2mTorr. The leak apparently cured itself while the beamers went looking for it, and did not recur. The beam resumed firing into the machine after a few shots. Shots #19 and 20 were no-power shots due to spurious I2t faults. Gary jumpered the board to prevent I2t holds until he and Joe figure out the problem, which is apparently a timing issue. Then shot#21 had no TF; it's not clear if this was just a random occurrence or was related to the previous no power cycles. DAQA crashed immediately after shot#32, which seemed to be a very nice shot with good EDA and RF. All CAMAC data was lost, but CPCI and PC's reported their data after DAQA was rebooted, so we actually have a partial dataset on this one. Some diagnostics and servers on the Linux boxes got confused by the crash, and the last several shots had data system SNAFU's. Hopefully these have been cleared and will not still be causing trouble tomorrow morning. Scorecard: ---------- No Power shots 2 Duds 2 (1 no TF, one DNB leak) Fizzles 1 Plasmas 30 ---------- -- Shots 35 |

| Sep 26 2002 03:08:46:193PM | 1020926027 | Steve Wolfe | shot#27: tf ramp up starts at .95 ends at 1.1 (was [1,1.2]) plasma, hmode with good eda, definitely peaking. next shot: RF to 1.2sec |
| Sep 26 2002 03:22:55:660PM | 1020926028 | Steve Wolfe | shot#28: RF to 1.2sec, ip point at 0.2sec to 750kA. tf ramp end at 1.05 Argon back on (30msec) plasma hmode from .69 to .97; looks elm-free again. argon? Also a late one 1.44 well into rampdown. next shot: shut off the argon |
| Sep 26 2002 03:37:51:890PM | 1020926029 | Steve Wolfe | shot#29: shut off the argon plasma hmode from .59 to 1.0, still looks elm-free. next shot: reload 27 |
| Sep 26 2002 03:50:45:760PM | 1020926030 | Steve Wolfe | shot#30: reload 27 plasma, hmode from .89 to disruption at 1.42sec definitely peaking, no effect of RF is apparent at this power level. next shot: RF power to .4MW |
| Sep 26 2002 04:03:59:783PM | 1020926031 | Steve Wolfe | shot#31: RF power to .4MW; no PCS changes and hope that the disruption doesn't lead to a fiz. plasma, hmode from .92:1.43 when it disrupts. Almost identical. Looks like the RF may have arrested the peaking. Next shot: RF to 0.6MW |
| Sep 26 2002 04:19:45:800PM | 1020926032 | Steve Wolfe | shot#32: RF to 0.6MW. Resisting the temptation to change anything else full length, got an ack fail at the pulse-recool transition DAQA has crashed! |
| Sep 26 2002 04:35:44:610PM | 1020926032 | Steve Wolfe | shot#32: Looks like all the camac is gone. Got RF, got magnetics from cpci next shot: try to run it again |
| Sep 26 2002 04:48:44:497PM | 1020926033 | Steve Wolfe | shot#33: Try to repeat 0.6MW shot. plasma: hmode started at .75 and ended at 1.2 Slightly late breakdown too. Next shot: Rf at 300kW |
| Sep 26 2002 04:57:46:200PM | 1020926034 | Steve Wolfe | shot#34: RF at 300kW plasma: eda h-mode starting at .92 next shot: RF at 600kW again. |
| Sep 26 2002 05:15:58:533PM | 1020926035 | Steve Wolfe | shot#35: RF at 600kW plasma Good eda into the RF, plasma full length It's a keeper. Next Shot: TOMORROW! |
