| Run Summary for 1021002 MP#323 "Scoping Experiments for Upper Divertor Cryopump Operation in Unbalanced Double Null H-mode discharges" Session Leader: B. LaBombard Physics Operator: I. Hutchinson MP Objectives: The purpose of today's experiments was to assess the potential performance of a cryopump located in the upper divertor for density control in H-mode discharges. The goals were two-fold: (1) determine the range of neutral pressures in the upper chamber for a variety of secondary separatrix locations and (2) quantify the active deuterium inventory in the plasma, neutral gas, and walls. Approach: Run a series of RF heated (2 MW) H-mode discharges (1 MA, 5.3 T) with different upper x-point programs. Monitor pressures in the upper chamber with the baratron gauge at E-top (E_top_mks). Monitor the total active gas inventory with instrumented gas input plenums and by operating with the pumping stack gate valves closed. Results: By the end of the day, we got a basic set of neutral pressure and gas inventory measurements for a range of SSEPs, but it did not come easy. The RF systems performed very well, routinely supplying 2MW with few trips despite the fact that there were many H-L-H-... transitions. Unfortunately, all H-modes were short-lived and far from EDA. Radiated power was high, supporting the H-L-H-... duty-cycle behavior. Shots 1-5 were gas calibration shots. We calibrated the NINJA plenums (large and small) as well as piezo valve plenums. By shot 18, Ian had put together and debugged a SSEP control wire on the PCS. This enabled us to quickly scan SSEP and density in subsequent shots, as called out in the run plan. Future MPs should consider using the new SSEP control knob. Luck had it that today was the day for one of the INCAAs in the J-port gas-rack to die. Of course, this INCAA was the one that records all the gas gauge pressures. Fortunately Joe Bosco located a replacement unit. With the exception of very low target densities (NL04~0.4, shot#31), neutral pressures in the upper divertor always exceeded 1 mtorr with SSEP at -0.3 or greater. As a "rule of thumb", the pressure in the upper chamber (E-top) is similar to the pressure in a lower divertor open port (E-bottom) for SSEP at -0.3 or greater. Judging by how the lower divertor responds, baffling in the upper chamber should increase the pressure there by a factor of 2. The gas inventory measurements clearly showed that the wall typically retains about 10 torr-liters of D2 (rough numbers), which appears to be released over a long time scale after the shot; the torus pressure was seen to rise slightly over the few seconds when the gate valves were closed. Shots with disruptions (13, 17, 29) resulted in a prompt release of gas from the wall which was recorded as large torus pressures after the shot (gate-valves closed). On shot 29, the wall was seen to release about 150 torr-liters! Perhaps deuterium-rich surface layers (boron/deuterium compounds) are ablated by the disruption heat loads. Important note: We were able to run H-modes in upper x-point geometry today (SNU) by taking an H-mode and sweeping the geometry from SNL to SNU (see shot 16). It is apparent that although the H-mode threshold cares about being in SNL, it does not care if the geometry becomes upper x-point dominant once H-mode is achieved. Detailed Shot Log All shots were run with pumping stack gate-valves closed and DNB gate valve closed. Shot 1 - gas only test using waveforms from 1020718007 Did not get desired waveforms. | Physop Summary 1021002 ______________________ MP323 Scoping Experiments for Upper Divertor Cryopump Operation in Unbalanced Double Null H-mode discharges. PO Hutch SL LaBombard Summary _______ Run started with 5 gas only shots and then two duds. Needed ECDC to get going and had some fizzle problems till things settled down. The new SSEP controller was exercised and proved very successful. On shot 20 a better version of SSEP was installed. The first one had an incorrect algorithm that gave too much SSEP for a given demand. The 2-Oct-02 version we ended up with is reasonably accurate in amplitude. It has an offset which is now corrected within the PCS system. Using integral as well as proportional gain, very good control results. This controller is probably worth using in place of zxu if you want to keep the SSEP really steady. A bug in EFIT was discovered. In close-to-double-null cases it reports positive SSEP even if it is negative. Steve Wolfe knows how to fix this. MP323 Scoping Experiments for Upper Divertor Cryopump Operation in Unbalanced Double Null H-mode discharges. The fluxihh code was modified yesterday to add a new predictor SSEP. It consists of the flux difference between the positions of the nominal upper and lower x-points, scaled to be in units of outer midplane radius, rho. Start PCS. Load segment 2 from 1020920020. Install SSEP on wire 11. Apply. Call the predictor. Put a small proportional gain on controller. .05=.2/s physics. Open controller. Put the keywords to: ALLNAMES=['PSI0','RCUR','ZCUR','CLEARIN','RXL','ZXL','RXU','SSEP'] Call. OK. Get a pop-up to confirm the rate. It says scaled_controller=controller(i)/rate(i)*common_rate. Which is horribly ambiguous as well as unclear. It offers: rate =9.19279 and says please enter the new common rate /sec. Just ok the common rate that is present, namely 4. OK. Seems ok except that it is lower case, implying not on. The factor seems to have to be very small: 0.00023 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1021002001 irby PHYSICS_OPERATOR Oct 2 2002 7:56:03:016AM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | Oct 2 2002 09:25:23:590AM | Brian Labombard | The purpose of today's experiments is to assess the potential performance of a cryopump located in the upper divertor for density control in H-mode discharges. The goals are two-fold: (1) determine the range of neutral pressures in the upper chamber for a variety of secondary separatrix locations and (2) quantify the active deuterium inventory in the plasma, neutral gas, and walls. We will be running a series of RF heated (2 MW) H-mode discharges (1 MA, 5.3 T) (such as shot#1020920020) with different upper x-point programs. Pressures in the upper chamber will be monitored with the baratron gauge at E-top (E_top_mks). The total active gas inventory will be monitored by instrumented gas input plenums and by operating with the pumping stack gate valves closed. | |

| Oct 2 2002 08:51:42:907AM | Ian Hutchinson | MP323 Scoping Experiments for Upper Divertor Cryopump Operation in Unbalanced Double Null H-mode discharges. The factor seems to have to be very small: 0.00023 | |

| Oct 2 2002 09:36:14:433AM | 1021002005 | Ian Hutchinson | Found that the ssep not becoming upper case was related to building the segment. After having done that it becomes SSEP. Load the SSEP controller into the model. |

| Oct 2 2002 11:54:36:057AM | 1021002014 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Nearly double null. Control of SSEP is not clear. Bt to 150kA at .1 to match the segment switch. Argon to 30ms from 40ms puff. SSEP gain to 5. |
| Oct 2 2002 12:07:14:683PM | 1021002015 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Seems to be controlling Adjust SSEP gain at shot end. Put in negative SSEP early. Lower ZXU gain to .2 at .2s. |
| Oct 2 2002 12:23:47:320PM | 1021002016 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Sustained upper-x point H-mode with what look like type 3 elms. Some zcur oscillations Set SSEP to -.01. Need to lower the factor to .00015. Raise zxl to try to avoid oscillations. |
| Oct 2 2002 12:42:09:400PM | 1021002017 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Disrupts at 1s. Probably caused by a probe scan. There was a first big injection at .8s when the first scan occurred. This value of SSEP puts the upper x-point outside the vessel. The controller does seem to maintain small error. Set SSEP to .005 |
| Oct 2 2002 12:53:50:900PM | 1021002018 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. EFIT declares SSEP to be 1.2cm, more than twice the request. But quite well controlled. No MKS b-bottom data. Repeat. |
| Oct 2 2002 01:10:50:323PM | 1021002019 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle. 30kA. Not clear why. Fiddle around with the gauges because they are not working. |
| Oct 2 2002 02:10:08:530PM | 1021002020 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Gauges still screwed. Discovered a factor ~2 problem in the SSEP predictor. Fixed by using the flux gradient from the reference shot. NOTE this error has existed in strkpsi and strkin since dot. Set drawn value to 0.01 m. This ought to be practically the same as the previous shot's .005, since the predictor values changed by about a factor of 2. Much fiddling with the pressure gauge's camac modules. |
| Oct 2 2002 02:29:50:600PM | 1021002021 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Add integral gain of 1 to SSEP controller. Fiddle with the controller factor. It seems to give greater phys gain. SSEP to .005m. |
| Oct 2 2002 03:13:49:527PM | 1021002022 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Got efit 8mm SSEP. PCS error is small. Control is working. SSEP to -2mm. Installed a second ssep wire to test offsets. |
| Oct 2 2002 03:27:09:957PM | 1021002023 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Got about 4.5mm SSEP. Wire 12 seems to show that an offset of 3000 is the wrong sign. Put in an offset of -3000 in wire 11 |
| Oct 2 2002 03:41:47:027PM | 1021002024 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Mfil thinks the SSEP is a mm or two negative. Efit thinks it is zero. SSEP offset to -2500. Drawn to +.002, to give upper null. |
| Oct 2 2002 03:53:51:090PM | 1021002025 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Nice upper null as requested. EFIT says SSEP=+2.5mm SSEP to -3mm. |
