| Run summary for 1021009 - EDA and triangularity The strategy employed was doing current ramp from 0.8 to 1.2 MA during RF pulse at different triangularities to see if the QC mode threshold in q depends on plasma shape. We had 9 useful shots out of 34. Three shapes were used: 1. delta_upper=0.6, delta_lower=0.7 2. delta_upper=0.4, delta_lower=0.5 3. delta_upper=0.25, delta_lower=0.45 It looks like at higher delta QC mode exists even at low q, and disappears at low q when delta is decreased. So the last shot was an attempt to check if QC mode will still be there if we go to 1.3 MA. Further data analysis is required to make conclusions. Useful shots are listed below: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1021009015 mossessian SESSION_LEADER Oct 9 2002 12:41:47:906PM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Plasma. RF ramps up to 2 MW. H-mode starts at 1 sec. It looks like ELM-free - fast rising core density and radiated power, but PCI shows the QC mode for the whole duration of the H-mode. Next shot - no changes. We want to get a H-mode started at 0.7 sec when Ip=0.8 MA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1021009017 mossessian SESSION_LEADER Oct 9 2002 1:07:54:013PM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Plasma, RF=2MW H-mode from 0.8 sec to 1.2 sec. Again looks like ELM-free from radiated power and density, but shows QC mode on PCI. The pedestal looks interesting - density pedestal is constant 0.8 to 1 sec and then ramps up. Next shot - drop upper triangularity to 0.4 and lower triangularity to 0.5 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1021009024 mossessian SESSION_LEADER Oct 9 2002 2:56:26:170PM . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | Physop Summary for Run 1021009 The machine seemed to be still suffering from post-Boronization recovery syndrome, with for the most part an "every-other-shot" startup. It would be worthwhile to spend some time trying to unravel the cause of the intermittancy. One theory that we explored during this run was that the current ramp rate was too fast for the vertical field. But this would put the plasma on the outer limiter whereas the light indicated that it was leaning on the inner wall. The wall conditions definitely have something to do with the startup problems, but there is no quantitative understanding of the effect. At any rate, we managed 15 shots with a fairly good variation in delta and q, so at least a few data points were obtained and the run could be considered at least partially successful. For more, see the session leader's run summary. Scorecard: 15 useful shots, 17 fizzles and one dud caused by EF3 breaker pulling. Engineering Setup and Run Plan for Wednesday, October 9, 2002 Continuation of MP 304, H-Mode Regimes SL: Mosessian, Greenwald PO: Parker ECDC Overnight in D2 @ 2e-4 Torr until 07:00 Run Begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00 Power systems setup the same as for Shot 1021008015 Gas setup: B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4) B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid Enabled (PG1) B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC) C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3) J-Bottom leave as is, Hybrid DISABLED Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, DNB RF Setup: Transmitters 1&2 in Run On by 07:00 RUN PLAN: General idea is to explore limits of EDA operation with respect to q and triangularity. Starting with a particular delta, we'll start with a high q EDA mode, then scan q down to find the limiting q for which the EDA disappears. Then, we'll decrease delta, and, starting again with high q, again scan q down until EDA disappears. |

| Oct 9 2002 09:16:41:217AM | 1021009001 | Ron Parker | Shot 1 was a fizzle. No change for shot 2, although BZ was too low on shot 1 |
| Oct 9 2002 09:24:35:903AM | 1021009002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 went off OK. BZ is still low, -2.8 mT at 5 ms, compared to -3.2 mT at same time on shot 1. |
| Oct 9 2002 09:47:15:837AM | 1021009003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 fizzled. Is the current rise too fast? Next shot: gas fill increased from 25 to 28 ms. BZ is still low. We are trying to reduce upper delta. |
| Oct 9 2002 10:02:43:570AM | 1021009004 | Ron Parker | Shot 4 ran OK with better control of upper delta. Breakdown was a bit late, because of higher gas pressure. BZ was still a bit too low, so we'll add 10 A to EF4 |
| Oct 9 2002 10:27:24:913AM | 1021009005 | Ron Parker | Shot 5 was a fizzle. |
| Oct 9 2002 10:28:25:463AM | 1021009006 | Ron Parker | Shot 6 was a fizzle. We are adjusting RCUR early to try to keep plasma off wall. |
| Oct 9 2002 10:37:41:120AM | 1021009007 | Ron Parker | Another fizzle. For next shot, we'll reload segment 1 from shot 4. |
| Oct 9 2002 10:56:19:517AM | 1021009008 | Ron Parker | Shot 8 went, no change for next shot. |
| Oct 9 2002 11:06:29:100AM | 1021009009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 fizzled. We suspect BZ is not keeping up with the current rise. Attempt to fix it by RCUR was not successful. We'll add 15 A to EF4. |
| Oct 9 2002 11:54:21:803AM | 1021009010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 fizzled. Back to shot 4, segment 1 |

| Oct 9 2002 02:15:59:733PM | 1021009018 | Ron Parker | Shot 18 fizzled. |
| Oct 9 2002 02:16:17:233PM | 1021009019 | Ron Parker | Shot 19 ran. |
| Oct 9 2002 02:17:08:437PM | 1021009020 | Ron Parker | Shot 20 fizzled. |
| Oct 9 2002 02:17:28:110PM | 1021009021 | Ron Parker | Shot 21 fizzled. |
| Oct 9 2002 02:13:27:463PM | 1021009022 | Ron Parker | Shot 22 ran. Interesting in that no H-Mode with 2 MW RF but ohmic H-mode develops when RF turns off. |
| Oct 9 2002 03:12:53:390PM | 1021009023 | Ron Parker | Shot 23 fizzled. |
| Oct 9 2002 03:14:08:440PM | 1021009024 | Ron Parker | Shot 24 ran with an H-mode. |

| Oct 9 2002 03:11:09:577PM | 1021009026 | Ron Parker | Shot 26 went off OK with end disruption. The shot had two periods with H-modes. |
| Oct 9 2002 03:25:53:233PM | 1021009027 | Ron Parker | Shot 27 went off, breaking the "every other shot" pattern. |
| Oct 9 2002 04:13:29:947PM | 1021009028 | Ron Parker | Shot 28 fizzled. |
| Oct 9 2002 03:49:40:167PM | 1021009029 | Ron Parker | Shot 29 fizzled. |
| Oct 9 2002 04:12:09:663PM | 1021009030 | Ron Parker | Shot 30 ran OK with H-mode. |
| Oct 9 2002 04:17:37:433PM | 1021009031 | Ron Parker | Shot 31 was a dud, caused by EF3 breaker pulling out. |
| Oct 9 2002 04:46:12:077PM | 1021009032 | Ron Parker | Shot 32 ran, H-Mode, good shot. |
| Oct 9 2002 04:56:12:997PM | 1021009033 | Ron Parker | Good shot, nearly 1.3 MA. RF had drop outs, but averaged over 2 MW. |
