This run is in support of MP#317, ITB with improved diagnostics. The purpose
of this experiment is to reproduce the off-axis ITB studies from 2001
described in MP269, MP289a,and MP291a with the expanded diagnostic set which is
now available. The goal is to obtain detailed density profiles from visible
bremsstrahlung and Thomson scattering, detailed temperature measurements from
Thomson scattering, ECE, HIREX, and CX (if available) diagnostics, and improved
plasma rotation data for input into TRANSP and GS2 or other gyrokinetic codes.
This proposal calls for obtaining EDA H-mode plasmas at a series of magnetic
fields, suitable for obtaining both high and low field ITBs.

We will begin with a shot from August 20th (5) where we obtained an ITB using
70 MHz off axis on the low field side.

Overall the run was successful, with a number of shots having ITBs. We
should have good temperature profiles from ECE, Thomson and HIREX for these
shots. The operating space for obtaining these appears to be quite narrow,
however. The ITB density from the visible bremsstrahlung profiles were
noticeably narrower than in the high field side cases measured earlier.

We were not able to obtain ITBs at Bfields lower than 5.5 T, even
though we tried to lower it in increments as low as .05 T. We had more success
at higher field, but were probably limited by having the resonance too close to
the antenna at 5.7 T.

Attempts to tune in the ITB at 5.45 T were unsuccessful, so we returned
to 5.5 T just in time to lose the J4 rf power system, leading to early
termination of the run.

Shot summary

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011001 5.5T
J-port RF power is being brought up slowly and is still at low power (also J4
was apparently not turned on.) The plasma went into H-mode when D and E fired
late in the shot. Good first shot.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011002 5.5T
Good H-mode, but starts late. It goes into an ITB late as well. No Thomson
data was available on this shot, however.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011003 5.5T
Two H-modes, but starts late. It goes into an ITB late as well. Thomson data
has returned. Density starts to peak on 2nd H-mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011004 5.5T
Good H-mode, starting somewhat later. A strong ITB develops after 1.28 ms.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011005 5.5T
Two good H-modes. A strong ITB develops after 1.2 ms. Hirex had Camac errors.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011006 5.5T
Two good H-modes, with an ITB on the first one which ends when the H-mode drops
out. HIREX is back on. We will try to repeat the shot for them before changing
field.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011007 5.5T
Three H-modes. Density remains peaked through the H-mode drop outs. We wil try
lowering the RF power to see if we can steady the H-mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011008 5.5T
Two H-modes. Density remains peaked through the H-mode drop out. We will next
add central RF to try and heat and control the density rise.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011009 5.5T
Two H-modes, although the first one started later. The 2nd rf pulse came in
just after the start of the first H-mode, and the density peaked somewhat
anyway. It did not maintain the peaking through the H-mode drop out, however.
We will repeat the shot in the hopes that the first H-mode will start earlier,
as it had done on previous shots.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011011 5.5T
Two H-modes, with an ITB forming on the first pulse. The peaking is halted by
the 80 Mhz rf pulse at 1.1s, and no further peaking appeared in the 2nd
H-mode.

We will increment the toroidal field up by 0.1 T and delay the 2nd RF pulse to
1.3 s.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011012 5.6T
Two H-modes, with an ITB forming on the first pulse. The peaking is halted
when the plasma drops out of H-mode, and is not recovered on the second
H-mode.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011013 5.6 T
Two H-modes, with an ITB forming on the first pulse and continuing into the
2nd.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011014 5.7 T
Three H-modes, No obvious ITB

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011015 5.7 T
Three H-modes, No obvious ITB, just like shot 14.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011016 5.4 T
Three H-modes, no ITBs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011017 5.4 T
Two H-modes, no ITBs.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011018 5.5 T
One H-mode, ITB returns.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011019 5.45 T
Several H-modes, no good ITB .

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011020 5.45 T

Three H-modes, no good ITB .
-

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011021 5.45 T
Two H-modes with a later start time, no good ITB . The target density was
higher. It will be lowered on the next shot.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011022
Fizzle

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011023 5.45 T
Good shot, earlier H-mode. Target density was lower. No ITB.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011024 5.5 T
Good shot, three H-modes. No ITB even though the last H-mode was long enough
to support it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011025 5.5 T
L mode until quite late. No ITB 5.5 T

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011026
fizzle

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011027 5.5 T
J4 did not fire, and we didn't get into H-mode until D port came on late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1021011028 5.5 T
J4 did not fire, and we didn't get into H-mode until D port came on late.

MP#317 ITB Studies with Improved Diag. Set (low-field resonance)
SL: Fiore
PO: Wolfe
EO: Cochran,Fitzgerald,Parkin

The run plan is to start with a shot like 1020820005, 800kA, 5.4T,nl4=8e19,
70MHz and obtain good ITB discharges to document with all available
diagnostics. Fine scans of Bt and perhaps Ip will be carried out to determine
effect on ITB formation and location. J-port may be limited to P70 < 1.5MW,
which may be problematic. An earlier example of low-field-side ITB in this
power range is 1010801025. The main difference in equilibrium is ZXU was 1.8cm
higher in that shot than for the more recent case, so that would be the first
thing to try.

If ITB's cannot be reliably obtained with J-port, then we will raise the field
to ~6.3T and use D+E at 80MHz to heat on the low-field side.

Setup:
------

Power Systems as on 1020820005

Overnight ECDC in D2 at 2e-4 torr off by 7:00AM
Gas setup:

B-Top 6 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG4)
B-side lower 1 psi Ar Hybrid Enabled (PG1)
B-side upper 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2, for ECDC)
C-Side 30 psi D2 Hybrid Enabled (PG3)
J-Bottom as is, Hybrid DISABLED

Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE,VUV,DNB

RF Setup: #1,2,3,4 in Run On by 7:00AM

PCS loaded seg2 from 1020820005; removed TF waggles and added
a maintenance waveform on PG3.
Start with seg1 from last shot of yesterday (1021010031) with ICEF4 changed
from -1325 to -1315. PG4 left at 26msec, Br0 .0015.

-------------------

Results:

The run got off to a good start. J-port quickly came up to 1.6MW with
few faults. ITB's were obtained at the starting field of 5.5T (153kA, PCS
setting), apparently cutting off the central ECE signal, although the Te
was dropping over the whole profile, and may have actually been getting
hollow. We then addded central power from D (80.5MHz) and got some heating
inside the barrier.

A field scan indicated the effect is incredibly sensitive to B, with a lower
bound between 5.45 and 5.5, and an upper bound between 5.6 and 5.7. Shot 17
was a repeat at 5.5T, confirming that the ITB was still present at that
field. At the higher fields we may have been having problems because the
resonance was close to or inside the antenna box at the top and bottom.

Raising the density to 9e19 at 5.45T gave a later H-mode, but no ITB as the H/L
transition came too soon. Lowering to 7e19 gave ELM-free hmodes, and no ITB.
Returning to 5.5T at 7e19 also gave ELM-free hmode, with no ITB apparent, and
9e19 stayed in L-mode until after 1sec; Wukitch reported that the higher
density gave a large change in tune.

We then returned to the original condition (5.5T, 8e19) for shot 26, which
fizzled, and shot 27, which had an RF problem (J4 screen supply). Fuses were
replaced, but J4 still failed on shot #28, and subsequently on a test shot
into dummy load. Since there was no time to find and fix the problem or to
begin a new sequence of experiments with D&E, the run was terminated at
16:45.

Startup was quite reliable today; only two fizzles out of 28 shots. There were
no disruptions (sorry Bob). All engineering systems ran without problems, as
did data acquisition and computers. DNB ran most of the day, and Bill has
hopes of extracting CXRS profiles.
