| Run Sumary for 16 October 2002 (1021016) Mini Proposal #312: Ohmic H-Modes The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the shape of the rotation profile for Ohmic H-modes. There are two reasons for this experiment. First, for use as a comparison to ICRF H-modes. Second, to determine the shape of the profile with an eye on the transport mechanism. This investigation would be part of a larger set of data pertaining to Ohmic H-mode, ICRF H-mode, and plasma rotation. Shot 001 Cycle test Loaded shot: 1020815029 Shot 002 Plasma: disruption ~1.6 sec, No H-Mode, low but acceptable signal on all spectrometers Shot 003 Plasma disruption ~1.6 sec, H-Modes Signal is low, K-port tripped, f is low but acceptable, jr. looks fine Shot 004 Plasma disruption ~1.6 sec, H-Modes 10 ms Ar puff, limited signal, line fits not run. Shot 005 NOT Plasma Shot 006 Plasma disruption ~1.6 sec, H-Mode Signal is low, a few time slice are o.k, but the count rate is low Shot 007 Plasma disruption ~1.5 sec, H-Mode ~0.7 Signal is o.k, Count rate is o.k. all spectrometers have decent signal Shot 008 Plasma disruption ~1.5 sec, H-Mode ~0.64 Signal is o.k, Count rate is o.k. all spectrometers have decent signal Ar up to 40 ms Shot 009 Plasma disruption ~1.55 sec, H-Mode ~0.61 Signal is o.k, Count rate is o.k. all spectrometers have decent signal >>>> We now switch, and preload 1020926026 Shot 010 we have switched the preloaded shot to 1020926026 Plasma No Ar puff Shot 011 No Ar puff Shot 012 Ar! Plasma! H-Mode! This looks good, all spectrometers. Shot 013 Looks great! all spectrometers have good signal. Shot 014 fizzle Shot 015 Plasma looks good, H-mode, very repeatably at 0.8945 sec, data from all spectrometers looks good! Shot 016 I changed the timing on F & K port spectrometers during this shot so they would collect every 20 ms, as opposed to every 50 ms. I also shifted their offset to 0.6 so that they run from 0.6 to 1.24 sec. this should help with the rise time measurements. changed the HIREX 3 & 5 sampling rate to 50 Hz, the time offset is 0.6 this will make 3 & 5 collect from 0.6 to 1.24 sec. Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.9052 sec, data from all spectrometers looks fairly good. Shot 017 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8981 sec, data from all spectrometers looks fairly good. strange rotation profile though. Shot 018 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8981 sec, data from all spectrometers looks fairly good. strange rotation profile though. Shot 019 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8873 sec, data from all spectrometers looks fairly good. still strange rotation profile though. Shot 020 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.910 sec, shorter duration data from all spectrometers looks o.k. count rates are not the best Shot 021 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.914 sec data from all spectrometers looks o.k. rotation is still dropping in the center and staying up outside Shot 022 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8638 sec data from all spectrometers looks o.k. rotation is still dropping in the center and staying up outside Shot 023 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.9069 sec Jr. triped, others look o.k. 024 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8961 sec I think I have figured out why the rotation was so weird I think it was a timing problem, wtih the camac. I may have corrected it. 025 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.9123 sec count rates were o.k. 026 Fizzle 027 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.9213 sec count rates were o.k. 028 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8961 sec count rates were o.k. Signals look good. 029 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.9033 sec count rates were very good. Signals look good. 030 Fizzle 031 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.9105 sec count rates were very good. Signals look good. 032 Plasma looks good, H-mode, at 0.8961 sec count rates were very good. Signals look good. More analysis will be required to determine if we have all the data that we need, but this run was very useful in fulfilling the goals of MP #312. |

| Physop Summary for Wednesday, October 16th, Run 1021016 MP#312 ITB Toroidal Rotation Ohmic H-Mode SL: Lee EO:Cochran, Fitzgerald PO: Irby/Wolfe ECDC overnight in D2 stopping by 07:00. Overnight bake at 60C Set up for possible ECDC in D2 between shots. Engineering setup as on 1020815029 Power systems the same as shot 1020822010 Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) J-Bottom should be disabled and pumped out Enable the following gate valves: ECE, VUV, DNB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: NO RF Required for this run ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Primary goal for the ill be to produce reproducible discharges so that SL can get good statistics. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Startup was very good today in spite of the problems we had getting a clean current rise. I believe we provided good data for the rotation studies. Steve Wolfe suggested we reload shot 1020926026 early in the run rather than continue incrementing from shot 1020815029. This change produced a very reliable h-mode plasma. These shots also lasted well into rampdown, unlike those from 08/15. On shot 5 we managed to store away parts of shot 4, plus have a very confused initialization process resulting in a dud. | Oct 16 2002 09:09:26:180AM | 1021016001 | Jim Irby | Loaded seg 3 from 1020815029 into segment 2: Yes, seg 2 is on Pulsed Gas 1 (Argon) from 0.350 to 0.385 s (35 ms) This shot will actually be a data system cycle/gas puff test --- data okay, pressure okay, IGOR hung for a while |
| Oct 16 2002 09:33:23:197AM | 1021016002 | Jim Irby | Try for plasma Lost plasma at 1.57 s: No h-mode target density a little low compared to 08/15 shot h/(h+d) at 2% |
| Oct 16 2002 09:59:56:010AM | 1021016003 | Jim Irby | Raised nl04 request from .8e20/m^2 to 9e20/m^2 EF4 to -1315 from -1325 A ---- a feel good tweak to fix very low Bz0 that will probably jump positive on its own this shot Plasma into rampdown --- EF4 somewhat more positive --- 2 h-modes |
| Oct 16 2002 10:12:28:853AM | 1021016004 | Jim Irby | Increase prop gain on nl04 from 6 to 7 at 100 ms Cut argon puff in half for one shot to see effect Plasma fpr 1.58 s --- still disrupting? H-modes nl04 gain increase helped early density |
| Oct 16 2002 10:42:54:697AM | 1021016005 | Jim Irby | Argon puff back to 35 ms NL04 gain to 7 at .05 s no plasma Data system very messed up. Looks like mixture of shot 4 and 5 |
| Oct 16 2002 11:04:05:557AM | 1021016006 | Jim Irby | Another attempt at shot 5 Before this shot the TCI laser was re-locked fixing problem with edge channels Plasma with one h-mode Will try to tweak rampdown on for shot 7 |
| Oct 16 2002 11:27:15:633AM | 1021016007 | Jim Irby | Started Ip rampdown at 1.3 s Plasma -- 2 h-modes |
| Oct 16 2002 11:31:32:773AM | 1021016008 | Jim Irby | Increased argon puff to 40 ms Ramping Ip down a little more strongly One h-mode Rampdown is actually worse --- will go back to shot 4 programming next shot Time (ms): 0 5 10 25 ---------------------------------------- Ip (kA): -4.0205 -15.7299 -30.0858 -74.0807 dIp/dt (kA/ms): -1.3085 -2.5874 -1.8236 -6.1353 Bz0 (mT): -4.9634 -2.9280 -1.4814 16.9785 Br0 (mT): -0.6554 -0.9316 -1.3487 -0.8695 |
| Oct 16 2002 11:54:28:620AM | 1021016009 | Jim Irby | Delayed Ip rampdown to 1.5 s Delayed TF rampdown to 1.5 s Plasma till 1.54 s --- 2 h-modes Still distrupting |
| Oct 16 2002 12:22:40:633PM | 1021016010 | Jim Irby | Loaded seg 2 from 1020926026 --- another/better ohmic h-mode day Plasma to 1.7 s, but no h-mode ---- operator forgot to load shot 26! |
| Oct 16 2002 12:29:21:870PM | 1021016011 | Jim Irby | In fact loaded 1020926026 for this shot No Argon Nice H-mode with ITB |
| Oct 16 2002 12:53:33:133PM | 1021016012 | Jim Irby | Repeat but with 35 ms of Argon Plasma into rampdown --- good h-modes |
| Oct 16 2002 12:54:48:523PM | 1021016013 | Jim Irby | Plasma into rampdown --- SL is very happy |
| Oct 16 2002 01:02:11:790PM | 1021016014 | Jim Irby | Added a little gas early to damp run-aways. Fizzle --- gas too high --- didn't notice trend |
| Oct 16 2002 01:32:07:680PM | 1021016015 | Jim Irby | Reduced gas by 1 ms ---- not clear which way we should really go comparing radial position change to ratiomatic trend --- so don't do much... Nice plasma -- good h-mode for Davis |
| Oct 16 2002 01:32:27:930PM | 1021016016 | Jim Irby | Repeat Good plasma |
| Oct 16 2002 04:26:42:187PM | 1021016017 | Jim Irby | Added 2 ms to prepuff: now 30 ms |
| Oct 16 2002 01:53:43:963PM | 1021016018 | Steve Wolfe | shot#18: wolfe taking over for Irby while he goes to a meeting No changes (although I think the gas is too low) Note Btop plenum pressure is only reading 5.5psi, instead of usual 6.5 plasma, disrupted at 1.51, seems to have hmode and barrier. Davis thinks the barrier may be narrower than usual Runaways early again. next shot: increasse pg4 |
| Oct 16 2002 02:08:01:070PM | 1021016019 | Steve Wolfe | shot#19: increasse pg4 from 29 to 32msec plasma, full length, hmode still there, no bounce this time. Rather long hesitation in current rise. next shot: down 1ms on pg4 |
| Oct 16 2002 02:22:22:140PM | 1021016020 | Steve Wolfe | shot#20: pg4 from 32 to 31msec plasma, full length. Hmode was shorter this time. Doesn't look like it got an ITB? slight early bounce. Leave it alone until it gets worse. |
| Oct 16 2002 02:33:04:483PM | 1021016021 | Steve Wolfe | shot#21: No pcs changes plasma full length; hmode looks better. I think the previous one got killed by a random injection. next shot: no changes |
| Oct 16 2002 02:53:05:593PM | 1021016022 | Steve Wolfe | shot#22: No pcs changes long delay for data system problem on shot 21, some analysis jobs lost plasma, hmode; may have had an early injection. current rise looks fast, then turns around but survives. I'm resisting the temptation to raise the pre-puff again. next shot: No changes |
| Oct 16 2002 03:11:12:917PM | 1021016023 | Steve Wolfe | shot#23: No pcs changes plasma, full length, hmode ok still bouncing in current rise. next shot: No changes |
| Oct 16 2002 03:15:19:440PM | 1021016023 | Steve Wolfe | shot#23: I started to change the drawn waveform for RCUR and PCS recalculated the predictors! I reloaded the old wire and tried to edit screen, and it complains predictors are invalid! I suspect somebody loaded an old startup and didn't update the predictors. I can re-do it now, keeping the offset of 3600, but I don't know what it will do. |
| Oct 16 2002 03:22:54:340PM | 1021016024 | Steve Wolfe | shot#24: no changes plasma hmode ok. next shot: Recalculate the rcur and zcur predictors in seg1. |
| Oct 16 2002 03:34:01:967PM | 1021016025 | Steve Wolfe | shot#25: Recalculate the rcur and zcur predictors in seg1 to get rid of "invalid predictor" leave Rcur waveform and offset=3600, just see if startup changes. plasma, disrupts at 1.71. startup looks very similar, a little less turnaround but still bouncy. I thought that the difference would show up in PCS::P_01:PREDICTOR:INPUTS but that seems not to have changed. I don't get it. next shot: no changes, while I puzzle this out. |
| Oct 16 2002 03:37:12:910PM | 1021016025 | Steve Wolfe | shot#25: It looks like I didn't actually do the recalculation on RCUR? Do it for next shot, and load it! |
| Oct 16 2002 03:46:26:190PM | 1021016026 | Steve Wolfe | shot#26: Recalculate rcur pred in seg1. fizzle! I probably killed it. Current gets to 55kA, bz swings way negative I bet I forgot to put back the offset! next shot: rcur offset in seg1 back to 3600 |
| Oct 16 2002 03:58:02:427PM | 1021016027 | Steve Wolfe | shot#27: rcur offset in seg1 back to 3600, where it was before. plasma, looks ok startup has a big turnaround, almost lost it on this bounce. The current rise is really fast, gets to 50kA at 12msec. next shot: pg4 up to 33msec |
| Oct 16 2002 04:10:24:163PM | 1021016028 | Steve Wolfe | shot#28:pg4 from 31 to 33msec plasma, ok. Irby is back. I'll keep trying to figure out why PCS thought the seg1 rcur was invalid offline. |
| Oct 16 2002 04:34:07:133PM | 1021016029 | Jim Irby | Cell access for Ron Bravenec to remove polarizers (via Howard) following shot. Good plasma |
| Oct 16 2002 04:45:40:700PM | 1021016030 | Jim Irby | Reduced prepuff by 2ms ---- Fizzle! |
| Oct 16 2002 04:59:52:080PM | 1021016031 | Jim Irby | Increased prepuff by 3 ms (Steve's change plus 1) plasma into rampdown |
| Oct 16 2002 05:23:49:697PM | 1021016032 | Jim Irby | Added 1 ms to prepuff (35 ms total) Plasma into rampdown --- startup a little better |
