| Physics operator summary for run 1021105 (Tuesday): Boronization recovery, then MP 325: TF Scan/rotation Session leader: D. Lee Physics operator: R. Granetz Engineers in charge: G. Dekow/W. Byford Summary: A very pleasurable day for the physop. Boronization recovery was a non-issue. Tokamak reliability was excellent; no disruptions; all shots ramped down completely. We even got through the entire MP. TF fields varied from 5.3 T down to 4.5 T, and then up to 6.5 T. At the lower fields, we initially lost the EDA, but increasing the upper and lower triangularities brought it back. See Davis's report for the rotation results. Scorecard: 30 plasmas (No disruptions! All shots ramped down completely) 1 fizzles 0 duds 0 tests 0 aborted and/or screwed up by computer problems ---------- 31 total ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engineering setup for Tuesday, 05 Nov 2002 Boronization recovery, then MP 325: TF Scan/rotation Session leader: D. Lee Physics operator: R. Granetz ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 07:00. Bake at 60 C overnight as well, if possible. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems the same as on 1021029008 (0.9 MA, 5.4 T, lower single null) Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave J-Bottom as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG5) Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, DNB ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: All 3 transmitters Run On by 08:00. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan: Investigate peak in rotation profile vs RF resonance location. Try to get EDA H-modes over a range of Btor's, starting at 5.3 T and dropping down by 0.2 T every couple of shots until we get to 4.1 T. If there's time, raise Btor as high as 6.3 T. We want EDA's, so we may have to play with triangularity and density a bit. Puff argon so the Hireces can get rotation profiles. Start with shot 1021029008, but adjust Ip to 0.8 MA, Btor to 5.3 T, and argon puff to go from t=0.35 to 0.39 s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The machine was boronized last evening. ECDC was done overnight, but no bake. Hybrid coldstart done by the engineering group; no errors found Loaded PCS from shot 1021029008 (0.9 MA, 5.4 T, single null lower), but adjusted Ip to 0.8 MA, Btor to 5.3 T, and programmed in a 40 ms argon pulse starting at t=0.35 s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. 0.8 MA, 5.3 T, nl_04=1.0-1.2e20 m-2. E and J each give low power, none from D. No H-modes. Current rise was a little slow. Next shot: reduce pre-fill puff by 2 ms. Shot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. Steady EDA H-mode. Got 2.1 MW RF, split amongst D, E, and J. Next shot: no changes Shot 03 -- Fizzle. Current rise was still a little slow. Next shot: reduce pre-fill puff another 2 ms. Shot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Prf=2.0 MW, but there was only a short H-mode late in the flattop. Current rise was still slow. Davis tried to fix some camac problems prior to this shot, but it didn't help. Next shot: reduce pre-fill another 1 ms. Shot 05 -- Plasma. Good shot. Long, steady EDA H-mode. Btor=5.3 T still. Current rise is still slow, but I'll leave it alone for the next shot. Next shot: no changes Shot 06 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Prf<=2.3 MW, shared amongst all three antennas. Btor=5.3 T still. Current rise is slightly faster. Next shot: no changes Shot 07 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Prf<=2.3 MW. Next shot: reduce Btor to 5.1 T Shot 08 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Btor=5.15 T. Prf<=2.3 MW. Next shot: tweak Itf down by another 1 kA. Also increase argon puff by 10 ms (to 50 ms). Shot 09 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Btor=5.1 T. Prf<=2.3 MW. Next shot: no changes Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Btor=5.1 T. Prf<=2.3 MW. Next shot: reduce Btor to 4.9 T Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Btor=4.9 T. Prf=2.3 MW. Jim Irby points out that the radiated power has been monotonically increasing from it's very low post-boronization level at the start of the day. Next shot: no changes Shot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Another nice long EDA H-mode. Btor=4.9 T. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: reduce Btor to 4.7 T Shot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Two shorter EDA H-modes. Btor=4.66 T. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: tweak Itf up by 1 kA. Shot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot. Two EDA H-modes, not as constant as those at higher fields. Btor=4.7 T. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: reduce Btor to 4.5 T. Leave shape and density the same for now. Shot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. Two non-constant H-modes, not sure if they're still EDA. An ITB forms towards the end of the latter H-mode period. Prf=2.3 MW. Btor=4.47 T. Next shot: tweak Itf up by 1 kA, and increase upper triangularity by reducing RXU by 2 cm. Shot 16 -- Plasma. Good shot. Two H-modes, the 2nd one looks like EDA. Btor=4.5 T. Prf<=2.3 MW. Upper triangularity is 0.42 (It was 0.34 on previous shots.) Next shot: increase Btor to 4.6 T, and lower triangularity (by reducing RXL by 1 cm). Shot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.61 T. Three H-modes, not very EDA-like. Lower triangularity increased to 0.55 (was 0.50 on previous shots). Prf<=2.3 MW. Outer gap has shrunk a few mm since making the shape changes. Next shot: increase outer gap by 4 mm (reduce RCUR by 2 mm). Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.6 T. Three H-modes, the last one is definitely EDA. Outer gap is back to 1.1 cm, which helped the RF performance a lot. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: no changes Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.6 T. Three H-modes, the last one is definitely EDA. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: go back to Btor=5.35 T by re-loading segment 2 from shot 07, but keep the argon puff at 50 ms. (Upper and lower triangularities, and outer gap, will change back from their current settings.) Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.35 T. One long EDA H-mode (again). RF had some problems. Prf=1.0-2.2 MW. Hard x-rays are starting to appear; current rise is fast. Next shot: increase pre-fill by 1 ms. Shot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.35 T. One long EDA H-mode. RF had some problems again. Prf=1.0-2.2 MW. Current rise is still somewhat fast; we still have some hard x-rays. Next shot: Raise Btor to 5.5 T, increase pre-fill another 1 ms. Also reduce RCUR by 1 mm to increase outer gap and maybe help RF. Shot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.55 T. RF still having problems. Prf=1.0-2.0 MW. Two good EDA H-modes. Startup is looking worse for some reason. Next shot: raise Btor to 5.7 T. Shot 23 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.73 T. One long EDA H-mode. RF power is still not very clean. Prf=1.1-2.0 MW. Alternator crew reported hearing noises on that shot. Hard x-rays were slightly reduced. Next shot: raise Btor to 5.9 T, using a finite rampup, rather than a sudden jump at segment switch. (PLC TF limit has to be raised to 170 kA.) Shot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.93 T. RF had lots of problems. Two short H-modes. No noises reported from alternator. Next shot: repeat, except ramp up Btor a bit faster. Shot 25 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.92 T. One short EDA H-mode. No noises reported from alternator. J-port faulted out early. Hard x-rays are down, even though early current rise is pretty fast. Prf=0.5- 1.0+ MW. Next shot: repeat, no changes. Shot 26 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.93 T. Long EDA H-mode. J-port worked well at 1.0 MW. Total Prf=1.0-2.0 MW. Next shot: raise Btor to 6.1 T. (PLC TF limit has to be raised to 175 kA.) Shot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.1 T. One long EDA H-mode. D and J worked very well. E had some problems. Prf=1.5-2.0 MW. Density continues to peak throughout the EDA. Thomsom central density trace looks like it saturated. Dmitri will check it. Next shot: repeat, no changes. Shot 28 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.1 T. One long EDA H-mode. Prf<=2.1 MW. Density continues to peak throughout the EDA. Dmitri finds that the Thomson signals are not saturating...the central density is really climbing for a while and then holding very steady. Next shot: raise Btor to 6.3 T. This is okay according to the RF guys. Shot 29 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.3 T. J-port faulted out early. Two EDA H-modes. Prf=1.0+ MW. Early current rise is getting faster, but no much hard x-rays. Next shot: repeat, no changes I have to go give my APS dry run. Jim Irby will take over for the last two shots (30 and 31). Shot 30 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.3 T. RF performance is much better. Two good EDA H-modes. Next shot: raise Btor to 6.5 T (RF guys OK'd it). Shot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.5 T. Two EDA H-modes. D,E, and J3 transmitters worked very well. Prf=2.0 MW. End of run |

| Nov 5 2002 01:46:11:753PM | 1021105018 | Robert Granetz | Shot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.6 T. Three H-modes, the last one is definitely EDA. Outer gap is back to 1.1 cm, which helped the RF performance a lot. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: no changes |
| Nov 5 2002 02:00:05:293PM | 1021105019 | Robert Granetz | Shot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=4.6 T. Three H-modes, the last one is definitely EDA. Prf=2.3 MW. Next shot: go back to Btor=5.35 T by re-loading segment 2 from shot 07, but keep the argon puff at 50 ms. (Upper and lower triangularities, and outer gap, will change back from their current settings.) |
| Nov 5 2002 02:12:42:057PM | 1021105020 | Robert Granetz | Shot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.35 T. One long EDA H-mode (again). RF had some problems. Prf=1.0-2.2 MW. Hard x-rays are starting to appear; current rise is fast. Next shot: increase pre-fill by 1 ms. |
| Nov 5 2002 02:31:32:443PM | 1021105021 | Robert Granetz | Shot 21 -- Plasma. |
| Nov 5 2002 02:49:51:457PM | 1021105022 | Robert Granetz | Shot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.55 T. RF still having problems. Prf=1.0-2.0 MW. Two good EDA H-modes. Startup is looking worse for some reason. Next shot: raise Btor to 5.7 T. |
| Nov 5 2002 03:51:13:523PM | 1021105023 | Robert Granetz | Shot 23 -- Plasma. (PLC TF limit has to be raised to 170 kA.) |
| Nov 5 2002 03:15:42:493PM | 1021105024 | Robert Granetz | Shot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.93 T. RF had lots of problems. Two short H-modes. No noises reported from alternator. Next shot: repeat, except ramp up Btor a bit faster. |
| Nov 5 2002 03:39:36:437PM | 1021105025 | Robert Granetz | Shot 25 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.92 T. One short EDA H-mode. No noises reported from alternator. J-port faulted out early. Hard x-rays are down, even though early current rise is pretty fast. Prf=0.5- 1.0+ MW. Next shot: repeat, no changes. |
| Nov 5 2002 03:47:18:713PM | 1021105026 | Robert Granetz | Shot 26 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=5.93 T. Long EDA H-mode. J-port worked well at 1.0 MW. Total Prf=1.0-2.0 MW. Next shot: raise Btor to 6.1 T. (PLC TF limit has to be raised to 175 kA.) |
| Nov 5 2002 04:05:17:243PM | 1021105027 | Robert Granetz | Shot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.1 T. One long EDA H-mode. D and J worked very well. E had some problems. Prf=1.5-2.0 MW. Density continues to peak throughout the EDA. Thomsom central density trace looks like it saturated. Dmitri will check it. Next shot: repeat, no changes. |
| Nov 5 2002 04:16:14:250PM | 1021105028 | Robert Granetz | Shot 28 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.1 T. One long EDA H-mode. Prf<=2.1 MW. Density continues to peak throughout the EDA. Dmitri finds that the Thomson signals are not saturating...the central density is really climbing for a while and then holding very steady. Next shot: raise Btor to 6.3 T. |
| Nov 5 2002 04:22:26:553PM | 1021105028 | Robert Granetz | Shot 28 -- Plasma. Good shot. |
| Nov 5 2002 04:33:27:920PM | 1021105029 | Robert Granetz | Shot 29 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.3 T. J-port faulted out early. Two EDA H-modes. Prf=1.0+ MW. Early current rise is getting faster, but no much hard x-rays. Next shot: repeat, no changes |
| Nov 5 2002 05:47:55:843PM | 1021105030 | Robert Granetz | I have to go give my APS dry run. Jim Irby will take over for the last two shots (30 and 31). |
| Nov 5 2002 05:55:58:047PM | 1021105030 | Robert Granetz | Shot 30 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.3 T. RF performance is much better. Two good EDA H-modes. Next shot: raise Btor to 6.5 T (RF guys OK'd it). |
| Nov 5 2002 05:40:52:323PM | 1021105031 | Robert Granetz | Irby for Granetz: increased Tf current to 181.45 kA for 6.5 T field |
| Nov 5 2002 05:56:19:830PM | 1021105031 | Robert Granetz | Shot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot. Btor=6.5 T. Two EDA H-modes. D,E, and J3 transmitters worked very well. Prf=2.0 MW. End of run |
