| Summary: RF conditioning after boronization All three antennas have been able to run in H-mode. Some rather long H-modes were produced. Total power has been up to about 4 MW for short periods. However, the voltage handling has not reached what we anticipated. Vacuum conditioning on D and E (up to 40 kV) did not appear to have much help in bringing up power. There are some concerns on the reported power level of D antenna, and J antenna. They are probably due to some calibration issues, and will be fixed soon. |

| Engineering setup for Wednesday, 14 May 2003 Purpose: Boronization Recovery/RF conditioning Session leader: Y. Lin Physics operator: J. Snipes ECDC overnight in D2 at 2e-4 Torr, stopping by 07:00. Bake at 60 C overnight as well, if possible. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems the same as on 1030506007 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, lower single null) Gas setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1) fill B-side upper with 10 psi D2 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) (for ECDC) fill C-side with 30 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) Enable the following gate valves, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, DNB, VUV ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RF Setup: All 4 transmitters in Run On by 08:00. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run Plan: We will begin with standard lower single null 0.8 MA, 5.4 T plasmas to recover from the boronization. Then, add ICRF to obtain EDA H-modes to tune up the ICRF for the high performance run on Friday. Summary: Overall, it was a decent run. The machine ran fairly well, though there were problems with the TCI, which made density feedback difficult. We ran most of the day on NL_ZMETER feedback and it worked reasonably well. A good shot to begin from might be shot 1030514005 with TCI or if the TCI is not working, then shot 1030514020 would be good with the Z-meter. There were a number of H-modes though the RF kept tripping throughout the day. Still, some H-modes reached 0.4 sec duration and we exceeded 100 kJ a few times. Shot 1: Copied shot 1030506007 lower single null at 5.4 T and 0.8 MA and nl04 = 9 x 10^19 m^-2. Dud! Shot 2: Reduced Br0 by 1 mT to 0.5 mT. Try again. Good shot ramped all the way down. TCI failed though. There was also no EFIT run and the CAMAC for the main rogowskis also failed. Shot 3: Repeat. Good shot. Rogowski CAMAC worked. TCI worked. EFIT worked. Shot 4: Reduced outer gap by 6 mm changing RCUR from 0.661 m to 0.664 m. Good shot. Shot 5: Repeat. Good shot. Shot 6: Repeat. Good shot. H-mode from 0.85 - 1.1 s. TCI failed again. Shot 7: Increased ZCUR by 1 cm to -0.005 m. TCI failed. No density feedback. Gas wide open. Density out of control. Disrupted at 1.4 s. Shot 8: Loaded wire 14 from the model file to change to NL_ZMETER instead of NL_04 density feedback. Reset the density to 9 x 10^19 m^-2. Reduced prepuff to 23 ms from 27 ms. Fizzle! Shot 9: Repeat. Disrupted at 0.7 s. Density feedback on NL_ZMETER did not work. Gas puff out of control. Shot 10: It seems the settings for NL_ZMETER density feedback were wrong at least compared to shot 1021001002 where it was used. So, I edited the wire and changed the feedback paramter on the ZMETER from -1 to +1 and reduced the requested NL_ZMETER to 0.35. Fizzle! Shot 11: Repeat. Good shot. Requested density still a bit too high. Shot 12: Changed NL_ZMETER to 0.21. Disrupted at 0.42 s. Shot 13: Repeat. Good shot. Shot 14: Repeat. Good shot. Several H-modes. Shot 15: Repeat. Good shot. Fairly long H-mode from 0.85 - 1.15 s. Shot 15: Repeat. Good shot. Fairly long H-mode from 0.85 - 1.15 s. Shot 16: Repeat. Good shot. Long H-mode from 0.81 - 1.3 s. Shot 17: Repeat. Fizzle! Shot 18: Increased prepuff back to 27 ms duration. Good shot with several H-modes. Shot 19: Repeat. Good shot with several H-modes. Shot 20: Repeat. Good shot with several H-modes. Shot 21: Repeat. Several H-modes. Disrupted at 1.55 s possibly due to an impurity injection. Shot 22: Repeat. Good shot. Several H-modes between 0.85 ant 1.5 s. Shot 23: Repeat. Good shot with a long H-mode from 0.75 - 1.2 s followed by another short H-mode. Finally exceeded 100 kJ of stored energy. However, the plasma disrupted just as it started to rampdown at 1.55 s. Shot 24: Repeat. Good shot that ramped all the way down. Several H-modes. Peak stored energy up to 117 kJ. H-mode from 0.84 - 1.26 s. Shot 25: Changed back to TCI density feedback. Set nl04 to 9 x 10^19 m^-2. Fizzle! Shot 26: Removed another 0.5 mT from Br0 setting it to 0. Try again. Disrupted at 1.17 s. H-mode from 0.8 s until the disruption. Startup looks bad - just barely went. Shot 27: Raised EF4U current from -1320 A to -1307 A. Removed 4 ms from the prepuff to 23 ms duration. Good shot. Ramped all the way down. Several H-modes. Shot 28: Increased prepuff by 1 ms to 24 ms duration. Fizzle! |

| May 14 2003 03:47:12:997PM | 1030514022 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 22: Repeat. Good shot. Several H-modes between 0.85 ant 1.5 s. |
| May 14 2003 03:55:12:550PM | 1030514023 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 23: Repeat. Good shot with a long H-mode from 0.75 - 1.2 s followed by another short H-mode. Finally exceeded 100 kJ of stored energy. However, the plasma disrupted just as it started to rampdown at 1.55 s. |
| May 14 2003 04:07:35:833PM | 1030514024 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 24: Repeat. Good shot that ramped all the way down. Several H-modes. Peak stored energy up to 117 kJ. H-mode from 0.84 - 1.26 s. |
| May 14 2003 04:29:12:737PM | 1030514025 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 25: Changed back to TCI density feedback. Set nl04 to 9 x 10^19 m^-2. Fizzle! |
| May 14 2003 04:40:26:077PM | 1030514026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Removed another 0.5 mT from Br0 setting it to 0. Try again. Disrupted at 1.17 s. H-mode from 0.8 s until the disruption. Startup looks bad - just barely went. |
| May 14 2003 04:51:35:263PM | 1030514027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 27: Raised EF4U current from -1320 A to -1307 A. Removed 4 ms from the prepuff to 23 ms duration. Good shot. Ramped all the way down. Several H-modes. |
| May 14 2003 05:04:14:110PM | 1030514028 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 28: Increased prepuff by 1 ms to 24 ms duration. Fizzle! |
| May 14 2003 05:15:52:157PM | 1030514028 | Joseph Snipes | Summary: Overall, it was a decent run.
